UTAR and ViTrox Corporation Berhad signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) on Work-Based Learning (WBL) Education programme at Kampar Campus on 15 January 2020. The programme

provides students the opportunity to work alongside R&D engineers on real projects over a period of one year to understand how the industry operates.

The MoA was signed by UTAR President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat and ViTrox CEO and President Chu Jenn Weng while witnessed by UTAR Vice President Ir Prof Dr Yow Ho Kwang and ViTrox People Development Manager Jessica Tan Siew Ping. Also present were Management Information System Manager Dr Janaka Low Chee Kong, Centre of Excellence Specialist Engineer Ir Dr Koay Loke Kean, Senior Manager of People Culture Su Pek Fuen, People Management Manager Yeoh Siew Eng, as well as People Development Executives Timothy Chong Seang Chun, Chong Swit Yie, Ui Xiang Ting and UTAR staff.

The third forum of ASEAN-China Private Higher Education Development and Cooperation and the first annual meeting of the ASEAN-China Alliance of Private Higher Education

Institutions (ACAPHEI) were held on 12 December 2019 at University of Sanya (USY), China. The event saw UTAR signing a memorandum of cooperation with USY to establish an international platform for exchange in response to the Belt and Road Initiative. Representing UTAR at the event was UTAR President Prof Ewe.

The ACAPHEI aimed to focus on the development prospect of a “mutually-centred and mutual-campus” to actively build the “ASEAN-China Education Community”. Besides, it also aimed to highlight some key cooperation projects.

UTAR signed an MoU with Yayasan KRU on 20 December 2019 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus to create more

“contentpreneurs” in the creative industry. The signatories were Prof Ewe and Yayasan KRU President Dato’ Norman Abdul Halim. Also present were Yayasan KRU General Manager Noor Hafeez Noor Hashim and UTAR staff.

Yayasan KRU’s Contentpreneur Programme would enable UTAR alumni and students to pitch their original intellectual property in the form of creative content to Yayasan KRU’s panel of investors and business mentors to secure capital for various stages of funding required for development, production and commercialisation of creative content projects.

UTAR and Wannan Medical College (WNMC) officially signed an MoU on 19 December 2019 at Sungai Long Campus. The MoU aimed to initiate international collaborative research in the

medical field and share joint development of research and expertise between both universities.

The signatories were UTAR President Prof Ewe and WNMC President Prof Liao Shengbao. The signing was witnessed by WNMC Vice President for Academic Development Prof Zheng Lan Rong and UTAR Vice President Prof Yow, who also represented Prof Ewe at the event. Also present were WNMC Director of Foreign Affairs Office Zhao Mei, WNMC Dean of Graduate School Liu Xiaoping, WNMC Vice Director of Scientific Research Office Zhu Zaiman, WNMC Deputy Director of YiJiShan Hospital Shi Lianghui, Vice Director of International Education Center of Education Group of AHNU Zhang Wannian.

UTAR Institute of Management and Leadership Development (IMLD) hosted the study visit of Guangxi Administration Institute from 18

to 22 December 2019. The visit aimed to develop a greater understanding on the development of China enterprises in Malaysia as part of the Belt and Road initiative (BRI).

The visitors were welcomed by UTAR Vice President Prof Yow and staff. Representing Guangxi Administration Institute were Civil Service Training Department Director Assoc Prof Dr Wu Tianbo, Department of Law Teaching and Research Assoc Prof Dr Liang Taibo, Department of Network Training Assoc Prof Dr Lu Xiaozhi and Department of Academic Research Assoc Researcher Dr Wang Gang.

Sixteen universities came together to form a strategic inter- and cross-university partnership, built on existing and potential

academic collaborations. As a result, the University Alliance in Talent Education Development (UAiTED) was launched on 16 December 2019 in Taipei, Taiwan.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed by the 16 universities. The universities include City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, National Central University, National Cheng Kung University, National Chiao Tung University, National Taiwan Normal University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Tsing Hua University, National

UTAR and Tunghai University, Taiwan (THU) renewed their ties by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU)

for the fourth time on 13 December 2019 at Sungai Long Campus. The MoU aimed to facilitate academic development exchanges, study visit, student exchange and internship between UTAR and THU.

The signatories were UTAR President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat and THU President Prof Mao- Jiun Wang. Representing Prof Ewe at the ceremony was UTAR Vice President Ir Prof Dr Yow Ho Kwang. Also present were THU Career Development and Alumni Relations Head Ching-Tsorng Tsai, THU Career Development and Alumni Relations Deputy Head Annie Tsai, Taiwan TungHai University Graduates’ Association Malaysia Advisor Yau Teck Kong, Taiwan TungHai University Graduates’ Association Malaysia President Loo Hang Chong, Taiwan TungHai University Graduates’ Association Southern California President David Hsiao-Pai Shen and UTAR staff.

Prof Yow was glad to continue this collaborative partnership with THU and hoped to widen the collaboration area in the future. Prof Mao said that he is looking forward to having more rooms for collaboration and improvement through this MoU.

The eighth UTAR New Village Collaborative Project (UNVCP) with National University of Singapore (NUS) ended successfully with a closing ceremony organised by the Department of Soft Skills

Competency (DSSC) on 16 December 2019 at Kampar Campus. Present at the ceremony were UTAR Vice President Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, DSSC Head Hee Chwen Yee, NUS representative Chan Mei Mei, Bagan Sungai Tiang Village Head Lim Siok Yeok, Bagan Sungai Burung Village

Head Heng Huah Pang, DSSC staff and students.The project, which involved six NUS students and four UTAR students,

was conducted from 9 to 15 December 2019. The programme aimed at helping participants acquire new necessary skills, be a more involved global citizen in the society, learn more about new villages, and identify and address communal needs.

The 7th Platform of Asian Architecture & Urbanism (7PAAU) International Workshop was held from 19 to 25 October 2019 at Penang & Kuala Lumpur. The workshop was organised by UTAR

Centre of Sustainable Architecture (COSA) together with the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) and Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) from the Northern Chapters.

The 7PAAU brought together seven architecture schools from Asia

for an annual discourse in architecture and urbanism. There were a total of 90 participants from seven universities, including Tunghai University, Taichung; Silpakorn University, Bangkok; Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies (KRVIA), Mumbai; Petra Christian University, Surabaya; Kunming University of Science & Technology, Kunming; 1945 University of Semarang and UTAR.

An MoU was signed between UTAR and WISE AI Sdn Bhd at Sungai Long Campus on 2 December 2019. The MoU aimed

to develop and improve the local contents of AI education as well as to facilitate industrial placement for UTAR students and mutual visits by staff to enhance research and curriculum developments.

The signatories were UTAR President Prof Ewe and WISE AI Sdn Bhd Co-Founder and Business Director Justin Goh Chee Guan. The signing was witnessed by UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Dean Ir Prof Dr Goi Bok Min and WISE AI Sdn Bhd Partnership Manager Audrey Foo Sheve Le.

According to Prof Ewe, UTAR believes in adopting the university-industry approach to provide opportunities to students to gain training, practical knowledge as well as experience in the industry while pursuing their studies at the university. Justin Goh was thankful for the opportunity to work with UTAR and hoped that the university and industry can collaborate in the area of identifying talents.

Centre for Immersive Technology and Creativity (CITC) Chairperson Dr Aloysius Yapp and CITC member Lim Chai Kim visited the University of Computer Studies Yangon (UCSY), Myanmar from 1 to

15 December 2019 to share their knowledge in immersive technology, creative media and new media with the USCY community.

During the visit, Dr Yapp and Lim participated in several activities such as Myanmar Universities’ Student Game Camp Competition,

heritage and religious site visit & fieldwork, seminars and workshops for UCSY’s undergraduate and postgraduate students and UCSY Game Camp Exhibition. They also met the President of Mahasi Sasana Monastery to seek collaboration in terms of using translation and immersive technologies to introduce, preserve and promote the heritage and culture of Myanmar.

UTAR holds Chinese New Year (CNY) every year to celebrate the Spring Festival and this year was no exception. Three remarkable events were held back to back at UTAR Sungai

Long Campus to celebrate the joyous occasion.The first event “Alumni Get Together and Chinese New Year

Celebration 2020” was organised by the Department of Alumni Relations and Placement on 11 January 2020. FMHS 10th Year Celebration was also held in conjunction with the event. Present were UTAR Chancellor Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and wife Toh Puan Ena Ling, President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Vice President Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Ir Academician Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) Dean Emeritus Prof Dr Cheong Soon Keng, FMHS Department of Population Medicine Emeritus Prof Dr Boo Nem Yun, UTAR Alumni Association President Koh Fook Huat, UTAR Registrar Yim Lin Heng, UTAR international students, alumni and staff. The second event “Chinese New Year Festival and Charity Night 2020 (《曙光》2020慈善新春盛会)” was organised by UTAR Chinese Language Society on 17 and 18 January 2020. Besides bringing the community together, the event also aimed to raise funds for UTAR Hospital and Chinese Language Society. The event was graced by Prof Choong.

The third event saw Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Year Four students from FMHS organising CNY 2020 celebration dinner on 6 February 2020. The event aimed to gather lecturers, staff and students for the CNY celebration. Present were Prof Cheong, FMHS Deputy Deans, FMHS Heads, lecturers, staff and students.

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Malaysia National Chapter (MNC) in collaboration with UTAR Centre for Cancer Research

(CCR) organised the 3rd Women in Science Forum WIS 2020 at Sungai Long Campus on 12 February 2020. The forum received about 100 participants from private and public universities as well as research institutions.

Themed ‘Women: Break the Barrier of 21st Century’, this annual forum aimed to bring together STEM women from academia and industry to meet, network, and hear about the research of nationally known scientists and mathematicians as well as to inspire and aspire more women towards greater success.

With the aim to strengthen the bonds between students and staff of Department of Mathematical and Actuarial Sciences (DMAS), DMAS Night Infinity 7 was organised

by Actuarial Science Society and Mathematics Society at UTAR Sungai Long Campus on 16 February 2020. Themed ‘There’s always one truth’, the guests of the gala night were placed in the shoes of a detective, solving cases, one at a time.

Deputy Dean of Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Assoc Prof Ts Dr Lee Kim Yee said, “DMAS started operating in January 2009 and had grown rapidly ever since. Over the years, our department has offered excellent training in equipping students with various skills for challenging work in the future. Our graduates are employed all over the country. They have also performed well in various industries. We are proud to know that our graduates are satisfied with the quality of education they have received from UTAR.” Aside from students and staff, the gala night also saw UTAR alumni, namely Tan Yong Chin, Dennis Ng Wen Wei and Deric Lee Ming Han joining the fun.

The UTAR Hospital project received donations of RM22,800 and RM4,817.05 from the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) and the Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) of Kampar Campus

respectively at UTAR Kampar Campus on 04 December 2019. Representing CFS to present the mock cheque was CFS Director Tan

Lee Siew. Meanwhile, DSSC was represented by UTAR Vice President Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong and DSSC’s Head Hee Chwen. The mock cheques were received by UTAR President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat. Thanking both CFS and DSSC for their noble effort in raising funds for UTAR Hospital Project, Prof Ewe said that it was heartening to have a team of academics and staff of UTAR to share the same goal of the University in giving back to the society.

Tan thanked the CFS family for being supportive and creative in raising funds for such a good cause. Meanwhile, Prof Choong explained the funds were collected through various activities jointly conducted by DSSC and UTAR students throughout the year.

A group consisting of UTAR students, lecturers and staff embarked on an outreach

programme at Kampung Sang Lee in the Raub District of Pahang on 23 November 2019 to provide local communities with health check-ups and consultations based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In addition to promoting TCM, a Japanese cultural workshop was also held concurrently at SJK(C) Sang Lee, Raub to enrich students’ life and promote learning of other cultures. It also aimed to bridge cultural gaps between foreign and local people, as well as between the young and old.

About 80 primary students and 30 residents, mostly aboriginals, from the village participated in the Japanese cultural workshop and the TCM consultation session.

中医趋向专业 发展前景看俏

拉曼大学中医系向国际迈进

中医学理论博大精深,具有数千年的经验沉淀,结合了传

统与现代医学教学,同时经过数千年的临床实践,无论在治病或养生方面都证明有效可行,为人们提供多一种医疗选择。随着中医学地位在我国的提升,卫生部也在2004年正式成立了传统与辅助医疗部门,而高教部随后也陆续发出学院与大学开办中医课程的准证,而本校是其中一所获准开办中医课程的私立大学。本校中医系创系于2010年,并隶属于医学与保健科学学院。

中医系临床课程主任叶鏸鸿中医师表示,“从前中医药虽然普及,但从业者当中掺杂了民间冒牌中医师浑水摸鱼。但随着我国在2016年颁布了《传统与辅助医药法令》,将中医列入其监管范围,明确了传统与辅助医药执业者的法律地位。该法令能够确保传统医药的发展及医疗安全性,更加系统化地提升本地医师的资格水平。”

“过去部分的从业者没有专业文凭,也没有上过正规的中药课程,他们的知识来源可能是传承自上一代,所以政府决定让拥有一定年限经验的从业者只要参与卫生部的相关培训课程,符合条件就能获得执业证书。但在未来,申请行医证的中医师必须具有受高教部承认的中医本科文凭。”

目前,本校中医系已有超过一百位毕业生,而在毕业后六个月内的就业率更高达95%以上。叶主任认为,“中医的就业前景早已与昔日不同,国内的需求量逐渐增高。为了增强学生的临床经验,本校透过中医义诊的方式,让导师们带领中医系学生到新村及各社区施诊。许多前来接受义诊治疗者并非只有华裔而已,一些友族同胞也乐于接受中医治疗。虽然现在的人对中医持比较开放的态度,但还需努力地推广和宣传,让更多人认识中医的价值。”

他补充,“除了带领中医系学生到新村义诊,本校也常年举办中医保健相关的讲座和活动,让男女老少更加了解中医。”

中医系主任郑健强博士表示,“我们与国外多所中医药大学有密切的合作关系,因此由衷感谢这些合作伙伴多年来所给予我们的支持与帮助。当中包括南京中医药大学,他们在本校中医系的创系过程与发展上给了我们很大的帮助。拉曼大学医学与保健科学学院成立于2009年,在成立之时,南京中医药大学推荐具有中医教学、研究和临床培训经验的教授和副教授赴本院教课,他们在中医学系进行教学和课程开发,同时在教学管理、师资培养以及临床实践等环节予以协助。”

“除此之外,本校也和广西中医药大学建立了密切的伙伴关系。两校于2011年11月1日签署了与中医教育与研究合作项目相关的备忘录。自合作以来,双方积极于师资交流、教师培训、学生交换、学生实习联合教学和研究项目。随着‘一带一路’的发展,中国渐渐加强对中医药的支持。因此,由两校共同成立的‘中国—马来西亚中医药中心’,成为了本校与中国的合作桥梁,进而推动马中两地的中医药合作。”

其他国内外合作伙伴包括陕西中医药大学、浙江中医药大学、扬州大学、贵州中医药大学、河南中医药大学、上海中医药大学、台湾的中国医药大学、同善医院、马来西亚北京同仁堂和善德中医坊等。本校与合作大学在师资交流、教师培训、学生交换、学生实习、联合教学和研究项目上展开了积极的合作,从而提升本校中医系的素质,让中医系朝国际化发展迈

进。合作大学委派专家学者前来本校中医系讲课,本校则为来自海外合作单位的学生安排短期的马来西亚中医药文化游学团、学分转移学习活动,以及给教职人员安排教学培训等,进而促进双方师生交际网络的建设及学术交流等。

关于拉曼大学中医系的课程概要,郑主任透露,“本校中医课程为期5年。学生须学习中医学相关的科目,例如经络腧穴学、黄帝内经、推拿手法学、针灸诊断学及中医耳鼻喉科学;以及西医基础理论,包括解剖生理学、西医内科学、西医外科学、西医诊断学、细胞与分子生物学,而妇科和儿科等专科则须中西医兼学。中医科目皆以中文教学,西医科目则以英文为教学媒介语,因此中医系学生须掌握中英双语。学生首四年的学习将在本校进行,而最后一年的临床实习则可选择在国内医院实习;或到中国的中医药大学附属医院实习;或一半时间在国内,一半时间在中国实习。在整个实习项目中,学生须完成八项考研才能毕业,即中医内科、针灸、推拿、妇科、儿科、肿瘤科、病房和药房的临床实践。”

本校现阶段正积极筹建位于金宝校区的教学医院。该医院将提供现代医学与涵盖了中医学、阿育吠陀医学及马来传统医学的传统辅助医学的医疗服务。中医部将包括针灸、推拿、各内科、妇科、儿科、皮肤科、肿瘤科、五官科、康复科、住院部等,并设有学生培训中心。

untuk para pelajar, Jabatan Perhubungan Awam (DPR) Fakulti Sastera dan Sains Sosial (FAS) dengan kerjasama Jabatan Kemahiran Insaniah Kompetensi (DSSC) Kampus Kampar telah menganjurkan sebuah program komuniti iaitu program tuisyen “Bahasa Inggeris, Bahasa Malaysia dan Matematik” dan “Program Pembangunan Kepimpinan Pelajar” secara percuma kepada para pelajar dari sekolah-sekolah rendah Tamil yang terpilih dari kawasan Kampar dan Gopeng bermula dari bulan Julai hingga November 2019.

Diadakan selama tempoh tiga bulan dari Julai hingga Oktober 2019, program jangkauan yang pertama, “Tuisyen Bahasa Inggeris, Bahasa Malaysia dan Matematik” telah diperuntukkan kepada sejumlah 14 orang pelajar dari SJK (T) Ladang Kota Bahroe, Gopeng. Program ini bertujuan untuk membantu pelajar-pelajar yang berasal dari isi rumah yang berpendapatan rendah. Kelas tusiyen tersebut telah dibimbing oleh sekumpulan ahli akademik dari FAS secara sukarela dengan menawarkan kaedah pembelajaran secara dua hala kepada para pelajar. Tambahan pula, program tersebut bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemahiran penguasaan bahasa dalam kalangan pelajar-pelajar India dari sekolah-sekolah Tamil supaya prestasi mereka setanding dengan pelajar-pelajar dari sekolah kebangsaan.

Selain itu, “Program Pembangunan Kepimpinan Pelajar” juga berjaya dilaksanakan untuk pelajar SJK (T) Ladang Kampar dan SJK (T) Mambang Diawan pada 20 November 2019 di UTAR Kampus Kampar.

Program tersebut merupakan sebahagian dari misi ke arah mencapai pendidikan holistik yang menyeluruh dan berkesan. Seramai 14 orang pelajar dari SJK (T) Ladang Kampar dan 26 orang pelajar dari SJK (T) Mambang Diawan telah mengambil bahagian dalam program tersebut. Di samping itu, program tersebut juga bertujuan untuk memotivasi mereka untuk sentiasa berganding bahu selain menanamkan sikap kepimpinan dalam diri sendiri.

Sebagai sebahagian daripada program pembangunan kepimpinan, sebuah ceramah motivasi mengenai "Kualiti Kepimpinan" telah dianjurkan dan disampaikan oleh Penolong Pensyarah dari Pusat Pengajian Asasi Gangadurai Ganesan. Selain itu, para pelajar juga menjalani sesi pembelajaran secara praktikal melalui aktiviti permainan yang membantu mengasahkan kemahiran kepimpinan mereka.

Ketua Jabatan Perhubungan Awam Dr S Maartandan Suppiah menjelaskan, “Program tuisyen yang dijalankan secara berterusan dapat membantu merapatkan jurang dalam penguasaan bahasa. Bahasa Inggeris merupakan salah satu bahasa yang paling penting di dunia. Para pelajar perlu mempunyai kecekapan dalam menguasai bahasa Inggeris kerana ia akan membantu mereka mengakses jutaan bahan bacaan, di samping membantu meningkatkan kemahiran mereka dalam

mata pelajaran Sains dan Matematik.”Beliau menambah, “Program

pembangunan kepimpinan ini membantu memupuk keyakinan para peserta untuk menyelesaikan masalah secara kreatif, bekerjasama dalam kumpulan ataupun dengan orang lain. Kami berharap program ini dapat meningkatkan keyakinan diri, kemampuan dalam menyelesaikan masalah dan kemahiran pro-sosial selain membantu mereka membuat keputusan yang bijak dan matang."
