How did you become a chainsaw carver?
I’ve been carving various items since I was at school and when
I was 28 somebody bought me a book on how to fully hand carve wooden rocking horses. So I made some large rocking horses as a hobby, one of which was purchased by Eddie Shah and one sits in the ‘Borchardt Ward’ at the old ‘Pendlebury Children’s Hospital’ I hadn’t heard about chainsaws for carving until about 4 to 5 years ago. I read a maga-zine on holiday in Cornwall and it mentioned the ‘English Open International Chainsaw Carv-ing Competition’ at the ‘Royal Sandringham Estate’ down south. So my wife and I went along and there were 35 or so of the worlds best chainsaw carvers there. I was about to retire from what I
was doing at the time so I said to my wife this is what I want to do when I retire.I bought a chainsaw and around about that time a tree came down in the back of my garden, it broke off about 15ft up so I carved it into a female figure from just below the knees upwards holding a bowl over her head. That effectively was my first chainsaw carving and from there I just started carving more and more.
Where do you get your inspiration from? Do you take any inspiration from other artists of forms of art?
What I like about chainsaw carving is that it’s using
wood which is a natural resource, I don’t agree with trees being tak-en down to be chainsaw carved, it’s only when much loved trees have to come down, when a tree needs to be felled if it’s danger-ous or it’s in some way diseased. Rather than a tree being sliced up and left to rot or burnt, a much loved tree can become something else which gives it a new lease of life. In terms of inspiration, I have looked at lots of artists and I wouldn’t as such say that I aspire to ‘Michelangelo’ or ‘Rodin’
but all artists know about the principals of proportion which comes from some of the greatest
ever artists. I’ve only been carving a relatively short time and generally speaking people ask me to carve something particular, sometimes in a particular way so I try to re-create what people want me to create for them. Other times it just comes out of my head and you just get involved with the chainsaw and let your head and your heart do the work so to speak.
I know you have created a wood carving of an Owl which features on our front page but is it just animals that you create?
Icarve anything people request. I’ve created badgers, foxes,
dragons, people, wizards, squir-rels a full range of birds includ-ing Owls, falcons, Eagles, >p7

<p4 pigeons, tree creepers, thrush’s, wrens, cuckoo’s ,wood-peckers. Examples of my work can be found on my website. www.thetimburgess.comCompetitions provide me with an opportunity to do something different. At the ‘Wales Woodfest’ earlier this year I carved a violinist which I called ‘The Mastreo’ which was 7ft high. At the ‘Oregon Divisional Chainsaw Carving Championship’ competition
in America I carved a an early American settler going round a tree with a pistol in his hands and a Native American Indian coming round the same tree the opposite way with a tomahawk in his hand. The underlying message was, ‘Why don’t we sit down together and see what future we can make for our children’.
What was your first commissioned carving?
It was for a couple who live in Timperley actually. I created a
traditional Chines Lion for them.
What’s your favourite carving?
My favourite chainsaw carv-ing I have created was a fox
made of Oak. I also like carving people because when you carve the shape of the eyes a nose and the mouth, it’s as though the wood really does comes to life and you feel as though you’re looking at a real person. That’s the way it feels to me sometimes anyway.
Have you ever been asked to create a carving of an individual or something bespoke... for a family gift etc..?
Yes. There have been
people who have asked me to carve things because they have had a family bereave-ment and the individual who
passed away liked a particular type of animal.. I created a large owl as a request from a lady whose husband passed away and he loved owls and the owl reminds her of her husband. In terms of creating people, I’m going to be creating a carving in August at a house in Knutsford. There’s a very large Oak tree which has to be taken down because it’s dangerous. The stump of the tree is going to be created into a carving of a Great Dane and its owner (the man of the house) holding the collar of the dog looking towards the gate, in his other hand will be a light so it will look like the carving is looking at who’s coming into the
gate.
You’ve already mentioned you’ve travelled abroad to create carvings i.e. America but how worldwide can your carvings be found?
I’ve been to ‘Ridgeway Penn-sylvania’ for the last two years.
I was invited to go there for the ‘Ridgeway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous’ - where about 200 carvers meet up from all over the world. I’ve been in the ‘English Open International Chainsaw Carver’s Competition’ for the last two years where I got the highest auction price for both years. Last year I won a competition in Germany where I created a large wizard with a fish eagle on his shoulder. This year I was invited to represent England with 5 others carvers in a competition which was against Germany, which England won and I ended up being the overall winner of the competition. I’ve also been invited to a competition in Melbourne Australia.
What’s the average cost a commissioned carving?
They vary. It depends on size, detail and the time it takes to
complete; however I create carv-ings from as little as £150 for a carving made out of a log. When it comes to create carvings out of stump the price goes up because of the complexity and the time it takes. The most expensive I’ve made to date was just under £3,000.
Do you need special equipment to create carvings which contain so much detail on them? And >p8

<p7 how do you finish the carvings do you use a paint or varnish?
Ihave a number of chainsaws, which do different tasks. Some
are large and some are smaller and they all have different pow-ers. I only use ‘Stihl’ chainsaws as I believe they are by far the best. I use chisels and very often I sand the wood down. I usually use ‘Cuprinol’ or ‘Rustin’s Danish oil’ to preserve the carvings. I only try to use local supplies one of which I get sponsorship support from –‘Ashley Mowers’ in Ashley who are a very good ‘Stihl’ saw supplier as. I also use ‘Frankland Tree Services’ who were actually the company responsible for the removal and re-placing of the tree at the ‘Larkhill Centre’ in Timper-ley – they are very professional and a very good tree Services Company.
How did you come to create the carvings that sit outside the ‘Larkhill Centre’ in Timperley?
There was a huge beech tree that sat in the corner of the
‘Larkhill’ area which had to come down as it was dangerous. It was taken down and the organisation committee at ‘Larkhill’ asked me could I carve some of the logs. Chris Frankland at the ‘Franklin Tree Services’ was asked to move the logs so he set the logs up in the location they sit in today. The people from ‘Larkhill’ decided they wanted a large owl and were open to suggestions about what to have as the other two. I suggested that the log lying down outside the centre could be carved into a boat (which could double up as a bench) but I would
also carve a cat sitting on the top so it would be like ‘The Owl and the Pussy Cat’ in’ the beautiful beach tree / Pea green boat’ - like the poem. For the third log which was a funny shape, it was suggested that I make something that people walking by could rest / lean on and then the three Bear’s suggestion was made
Do you only ever create carvings on trees that are damaged or that are being felled? And would ever create a carving on a healthy tree?
No. I think it would be wrong to create a carving on a
healthy tree. I only use green wood.
On carvings that are created on trees which are still rooted (i.e. on a Stump) Do they need to be preserved / re-carved?
Yes, the trees generally dry out but they will still last
many years. For example Oak over a long period of time i.e. 60 to 80 years will go silvery grey. When I create carvings they will eventually begin to decay but in the shape of the carving that’s been created but that might not be for 50 years or so. Usually any decay happens down at the root level so the carving can always be sawn off and moved, for example if somebody wanted to move house the carving could move with them.
Can people see you carve live? Do you do demonstrations?
Yes I do, do demonstrations (details are on my website –
but this season is coming to an end) where people can see me
carve live, I was recently at the ‘Altrincham festival’, and I will was at the ‘Tatton Park Country Fair on the August Bank Holiday weekend where I took part in the ‘English Open International Chainsaw Carving Competition’ . For all future demonstrations its best to check my website, which is regularly updated; www.thetimburgess.com
Have you ever taught or passed your skills onto anybody else?
Yes, I have taught both of my two sons and my brother, Andy, who are all getting very handy at it.
For people reading this who may have a passion for creating their own carvings, how can they learn more about the art form?
The first thing people need to do is make sure they are safe.
I have lots of safety equipment. i.e. Chainsaw Trousers, Chainsaw Boots and gloves, Protective head gear with ear defenders etc. You also need a chainsaw. But it’s important that you know how to be safe with a Chainsaw. If people are interested they need to go on a ‘NPTC Chainsaw cost cutting maintenance course’ which is a three day course with an assessment – I did my course at Myerscough College near Pres-ton. Once passed, you are quali-fied to use a chainsaw for three years. When you are certified to be safe with a chainsaw you can then be taught by somebody like me (a chainsaw carver) to create your own carvings.

The Larkhill Centre on Larkhill Park, Thorley Lane, Timperley
is a registered charity, originally funded by the National Lottery.
Viscount Ashbrook of Arley Hall, opened the Centre on 11 November 2001 and it replaced the old red cross building, on the site that had been opened by Viscount Ashbrook’s mother, Lady Ashbrook, in October 1950.
The Red Cross Hut, as it was affectionately known, was originally two prisoner of war
huts from the camp at Dunham Massey. When the buildings were sited on Larkhill Park they became for many years a meeting place for various community groups across Timperley.
In 1998 the Hut was declared unfit for use and a lottery bid was made to fund a replacement and this was successful resulting in the Larkhill Centre.
The Larkhill Centre is now following on the tradition of the Red Cross Hut and hosts 17 user groups. These include fitness groups for all ages, musical groups and also children’s groups. Further details of the users can be obtained from the web site;
larkhillcentre.org.uk.
The centre is also available to hire for private events such as children’s parties and family celebrations. The centre itself has organised barn dances and jazz concerts to assist in fund raising, which help with the running costs of the building. At Christmas the Timperley Brass Band entertain us with Christmas Concerts and due to the demand we have put on two concerts in December.
There are twelve members on the management committee, all of which are volunteers.
If you feel you can contribute as a volunteer, Please leave your name and address on the centre’s answerphone 0161 980 0864.

tent of an average fruit is about 10% and about 29 calories. An exotic fruit with thousand of air miles! Not so if you grow your own. I have grown Kiwis in Timperley for many years and last year I had a bumper crop at over 30 lbs off two plants (female) plus 1 male. The plants grow outside in well
drained soil. Some shoots go into the greenhouse but most grow outsides with no protection. The plants are very vigorous and can grow 12 – 18 feet or more a year, so pruning and training is necessary to control growth and fruiting which can occur in June but mostly in winter. It’s difficult at first but gets easier; it’s like a grape vine with very vigorous growth. Male and female plants are needed but there are some self pollinating varieties available. The plants can be tied to wires or pergolas. Some protection can be >p12

I leave fruit on until the leaves fall with frosts then I can find the fruits easier. When Jenny McCarthy’s ten-year-old son James said he didn’t want to go back to school after his summer break she put it down to normal new-term-apprehension. Unfortunately the problem was more serious and James quickly went from a brilliant attendance record to constant absenteeism and even truancy. Jenny was seriously concerned but felt helpless.
“I couldn’t understand it,” shesays, “James was a great student. He’s a quiet lad and doesn’t have a wide social circle but he always seemed happy.”
In desperation she turned to her local GP who mentioned school phobia.
“He explained that it was a disabling and persistent fear of attending school and that sufferers were as likely to be able students as struggling ones and as likely to be from supportive, happy families as from dysfunctional
She arranged to see the educational psychologist from James’ school and found her very helpful. The ed psych, as they are known, agreed that James had almost certainly developed a form of school phobia and was able to draw up a programme to help integrate him back into school life.

ones. It’s a condition which crosses all boundaries.”
There are certain factors which make school phobia more likely. Sufferers have often had a chronic debilitating illness; are the youngest child in a family or are only children.
“James is our only child and he’d had glandular fever in the few weeks before the summer holidays which meant he’d been away from school for much longer than usual,”says Jenny.

Cardwell Theatre School
0161 941 26834E Moss Lane, Altrincham, Cheshire, WA14 1BA
Lynda Cardwell began her teaching career in 1973 when she opened a theatre school at the Capri Ballroom, Platt Lane, Rusholme. For the next fifteen years she was to train students who would continue in the profession as both teach-ers and performers. Former pupils went on to appear in many West End shows as well as televi-sion and drama productions.
In 1985, Lynda was appointed an examiner for the I.D.T.A and now, as a Principal Examiner - Member of Theatre Council and Head of Ballet Faculty, she regularly examines, lectures and adjudicates both in this country and abroad. This year she has had the pleasure of examining in Holland and New Zealand and was delighted to be asked to adjudicate the finals of Miss Dance of Great Britain and Dance Master.
The next milestone in Lynda’s career came in 1988 when Lynda Cardwell School of Dancing and the Barbara Sharples School of Dancing merged to form the Sharples Theatre School, later to be renamed the Sharples Cardwell Theatre School. This proved to be a most successful venture that continued for eleven years until the retirement of Miss Sharples in July 1999.
The Cardwell Theatre School continues to be a huge success, with excellent results for both I.D.T.A and R.A.D. examinations. Pupils regularly appear in pantomime and professional shows. Former students are presently performing with English National Ballet, We will Rock You U.K Tour and Stuttgart, several Major Cruise Compa-nies and in cabaret around the U.K.
The ethos of the Cardwell Theatre School is to maintain a happy environment where children can develop their creativity and a love of dance whilst allowing them to achieve their full poten-tial.

After a few months James integrated back into school and has had very few problems since.
“He does still get a bit anxious after a break but we know what it is now and can work with him to help overcome that. I’d say to anyone in the same position, talk to the school and your GP. Don’t think you have to deal with it on your own.”
Is it a Phobia?A child with school phobia:
May have a fear of being away from home
Feel unhappy in social groups of more than four or five people
Be worried about what other children might say when they do return to school
Have low confidence, low self-esteem and hate being the centre of attention
Fake illness (stomach ache, headache etc)
Be shy and/or emotionally immature
If you think your child may be suffering talk to your GP and the school. Ask for a referral to the educational psychologist.
