EDITORIAL
We need to break down
the misconception that
sustainability is only concerned
with the environment and
conservation... It’s also about
being a responsible citizen,
good governance and ethical
practices...
Dear Readers
I’m delighted to present to you the latest edition of ME – your very own Mahindra Group newsletter. Thank you for all the positive feedback for the new look. Several readers have greatly appreciated the emphasis on visuals and fresh content. We are happy our efforts have paid off!
The cover story in this issue has something of a twist in the tale. We focus on ‘Demystifying Sustainability’. Why ‘demystifying’? Because we need to break down the misconception that sustainability is only concerned with the environment and conservation. It’s not merely about reducing consumption of conventional energy, reducing waste, using renewable energy, and planting trees. It’s also about being a responsible citizen, good governance and ethical practices. These responsibilities extend to all stakeholders while generating profits and rewarding shareholders. It’s about a clean, green supply chain, local sourcing and inclusive growth and most importantly, it’s about our responsibility to future generations. Simply put, sustainability means effectively managing economic and social dimensions, including the environment.
This edition also brings you all the excitement from the Delhi Auto Expo 2012, where Mahindra displayed its automotive might and even a rather frisky ‘Cheetah’ which enthralled visitors to the XUV500 display. Incidentally, you can catch the Cheetah’s antics online at http://tinyurl.com/6snmm3q. Speaking of the XUV 500, Mahindra’s celebrated SUV has received 20 awards within a few months of its launch – a clear testimony to its runaway success and popularity.
It’s been a busy quarter for the Group with various sectors and businesses receiving multiple awards for their outstanding work. Mahindra World City celebrates its tenth anniversary, Mahindra Chakan rolls out its 100,000th vehicle and Mahindra Solar One commissions its first 5 MW plant near Jodhpur. And Mahindraites across the Group lent a helping hand to help others Rise to reach their potential.
The excitement never ends at Mahindra!
We hope you enjoy reading this issue and welcome your feedback, as always.

Youth power is believed to be one of the most important assets for economic growth. Young people around the globe have an incredible
power to effect change, thanks in no small part to the greater connectivity brought about by new technologies and social media. They
also share a deep sense of duty and pragmatism. Rather than blaming other generations or cultures for the planet’s afflictions, they are
ready to shoulder responsibility for creating achievable solutions. They don’t just believe it is their generation’s duty to change the
world, they also believe they have the power to pull it off. This spirit was evident in the 5th Fireside Chat, chaired by Ulhas Yargop,
President, IT Sector.
With the participants leading the way, a dialogue on CSR and its relationship with sustainability was inevitable. Key aspects of the
discussion focused on our responsibility towards the planet and towards future generations. As was rightly deduced by the group:
“Economic growth and preservation & conservation go hand in hand.”
With Rise and Innovation being the new buzz words, could a discussion truly be complete without a few snippets on each? The
participants wasted no time in exhorting the organization to follow the example set by the late Steve Jobs and Apple, while at the same
time, accepting responsibility towards bringing in innovation in the smallest things we do. After all, that’s what M&M’s RISE pillars talk
about – Accepting No Limits, Alternative Thinking and Driving Positive Change.
The richness and diversity of views that were expressed in a very freewheeling and informal atmosphere went a long way in creating a
spirit of learning, respect for others’ views and, of course, a feeling of bonding – that we are all part of this ‘one big family’ and can learn
from each other. Mr. Yargop’s outstanding facilitation of the Fireside Chat in no small measure contributed to this outcome.
Such inspiring conversations not only give us time to reflect on issues that are not related to our day-to-day work, but also serve the
larger purpose of making us more ‘wholesome’ individuals, in tune with the issues in the world around us. With such an enriching
experience, our young leaders have returned to their Sectors energized and empowered to make a difference in their areas of expertise -
in the Company, in the Group and in the world as a whole.
Fireside Chats were established by American President Franklin Delano Roosevelt during the Great Depression, to provide his fellow countrymen with an opportunity to reach out to him and be heard. His speeches were relayed to the American public by radio in the evenings when families would gather by the fire after dinner. He spoke of plans such as creating jobs for the unemployed, thereby giving hope when there was little to appreciate. M&M has instituted Fireside Chats, following a similar purpose and focus as President Roosevelt. During each such chat, a Senior GEB member provides a forum for young leaders to engage in discussion on a wide array of topics.

of their behaviour when taken out of their comfort zones and an analysis of their skills as leaders.
In the Treasure Hunt event, the team was taught skills like distancing and contouring and the use of a magnetic compass and gained an

SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability Efforts at MWC ChennaiMahindra World City (MWC) is pioneering the use of solar energy in Tamil Nadu,
with the commissioning of a 75 KW capacity off grid solar power plant at end-October
2011. The plant, located on the roof of the Canopy Commercial Complex, is expected
to generate approximately 1,16,000 units (kWh) of clean electrical energy annually and
will result in significant savings in electricity bills, as well as offset nearly 60 tonnes of
CO2 annually by decreasing diesel usage at the site.
Other sustainability initiatives at MWC are Xeriscaping work on over 60 acres, implementation of water conservation methods
such as drip irrigation and planting of drought resistant trees. Besides, an LED lighting system has been installed for outdoor
infrastructure areas, saving around 560 watts of conventional electricity.
