During my recent trip to the UK with a couple of teachers, we attended some education and technology exhibitions and visited the University of Oxford, a notable alumnus of which is a Japanese scholar called Dr Okada Akito. In his book ‘100 Life Lessons from Oxford for Changing Yourself’, Dr Akito talked about an English theoretical physicist and cosmologist, Stephen Hawking, who died recently in March 2018 and who was also an alumnus of the university.

In Dr Okada Akito’s articles ‘Looking Up to the Stars’ and ‘Patience – the Mother of Success and Self-confidence’, he mentioned that Hawking’s illness had gradually paralyzed him over the years. However, despite his problems of paralyzed muscles, loss of speech and difficulties in breathing, Hawking had overcome all these adversities, continued his intense devotion to research and made great achievements academically.

Hawking reminded us that one must not give up, but keep one’s patience – looking up to the stars, concentrating on work and studies, strengthening one’s character with perseverance and overcoming adversities. From this, Dr Akito quoted Romans 5: 3-4, the words he heard from the Principal of the University of Oxford during the opening ceremony:

(NIV version) “Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

The Scripture reminds us to think about the purpose of perseverance when facing adversities. We must be prepared at any time so that we can grasp the opportunities when they come. Patience is the power to encourage yourself to practise what you have learned to achieve life goals so that you are able to help and inspire others and yourself with your hope for the future.

It matches perfectly the motto of the University of Oxford and the opening words of Psalm 27:1, meaning The Lord is my light. No doubt, it also matches our school motto closely, “All for One, One for All” and “Light and Life”. Remember to love and serve others in need. Study hard to better equip yourself to enjoy your school life at the same time. I am sure that it is essential and valuable to grow up during the process. Be patient and persistent. Learning to be good citizens who will contribute to society in future should be your ultimate goal.

Let there be light.

Academic Affairs“5D Sam Tang. First in Form Five, First in Class 5D, First in Business, Accounting and Financial Studies, First in Biology, First in Chemistry, Third in Liberal Studies …”. I believe all of you were amazed and flabbergasted when you heard this in the First Term Prize Presentation Ceremony. Sam has obtained excellent academic results since he was still in junior forms. How can he become a walking encyclopedia? (Or what you commonly say: ‘Hok Ba’) Let’s see what tips Sam can offer to us:

Studying certainly requires a lot of hard work. Here are some strategies that may help you study in a better way.

I believe planning your time wisely is essential for you to study efficiently. You can allocate a specific amount of time into different subjects every day. For instance, you can spend more time revising the subject that you are not good at or revising what you have learnt in the lessons so as to consolidate your knowledge. Surely, everyone needs entertainment. I think the most important thing is that you do not indulge yourselves in it.

Asking questions is one of the best ways to help you study more effectively. Especially for some science subjects, it is difficult for you to apply what you have learnt without understanding the concepts or principles behind. Therefore, when you do not understand the content of the lessons, it will be great if you can ask your teachers at once.

I sincerely hope you find these pieces of advice useful and wish you can have improvement in your studies.

Prefect Team

Prefects’ TrainingJason Nip Yung Lok (5C)Head Prefect

Being a prefect is not an easy job. We have a lot of daily responsibilities and we are the role models of our fellow schoolmates, demonstrating what should be done and what should not be done, and ensuring their safety on the school campus.

Some may think that the life of prefects is only full of duties, but this is not the case. To facilitate prefects’ further development, there are regular training programmes. For example, on 26 November 2017, the prefect leaders organized an outing – Prefects Hiking to Mount Parker Road. We hope that through this type of activity, prefects can develop their leadership and strengthen their team spirit. More importantly, prefects can relax at the countryside.

Other than hiking, we also have a yearly day camp and an overnight camp. We work with different organizations to design a lot of team-building and problem-solving challenges. This year, in the day camp held on 23 February 2018, one of the tasks was to make use of the materials provided to move a can of water to the target position. Some group members

were not allowed to open their eyes while the others could not use their hands. From this activity, we realize that each of us has different limitations and we have learnt to give instructions precisely and to be patient always.

Through these training programmes, prefects can learn different skills such as leadership skills, collaborative skills and interpersonal skills, which help us to do better in our daily duties.

Forty S1 and S2 girls joined the year-long programme run by the Women’s Foundation starting from November 2017. In the series of workshops, our girls were empowered to try out various activities which have long been perceived as only ‘male-do-right’ matters: writing programming language, coding, electronic craft, etc.. Our girls did enjoy and benefit a lot. Is technology solely for boys? No. GIRLS can be tech-savvies too!

Icing on the cake: Our school year was drawn to a close with tremendous excitement - we were awarded the ‘GGT Transformation Award’ by the Women’s Foundation and Goldman Sachs in recognition of our work in STEM education. Hurray!

With the sponsorship of the IMC, our School Principal, together with two teachers, participated in a seven-day education excursion in January 2018 in London with the aim of exploring how e-learning and STEM curriculum are practised in the UK classrooms. The tour included school visits, information seminars and an IT exhibition ‘BETT’ held annually in the UK. The trip marked an important milestone for our school’s STEM education, which paves way for us to unleash our students’ potential in innovation by equipping them with the ability to integrate and apply knowledge and skills across different STEM disciplines, and to nurture their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills as required in the 21st century.

Careers & Life Planning

Have you ever envisaged how ideal your mid-50s can be when you have saving ‘big’ enough to secure the rest of your life? What if you are so unfortunate that you go

bankrupt or suffer from chronic diseases, whichever one of them can cost you a whole life’s deposits and leave you no extra penny to spare? The ‘$avvy Planner’ Workshop was run by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth for all S5 students in March 2018 in order to arouse their awareness of money matters. By playing a board game cleverly-designed, students learnt to make important life decisions on a couple of simulated occasions at different stages of their life. Despite the obstacles and failures encountered, all participants were fully engaged and acquired an important lesson on how to plan ahead and manage their finance.

On 7 February 2018, we, a group of forty S5 students visited Mizuho Bank Limited through the Business-School Partnership Programme organized by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. Mizuho Bank is a corporate bank providing comprehensive financial and strategic services to its clients and one of the biggest financial institutions in Japan. The visit started with an executive talk in which the history of the bank, as well as its various services such as deposits, lending, security investment and domestic exchange settlement, was introduced followed by a guided tour to the different departments of the bank. From the tour, we realized that the bank is divided into front, middle and back offices. Also, we got to know that it is the specialization of expertise which allows the bank to run smoothly. For instance, the treasury department requires professionals with an extremely high sensitivity in numbers as each deal can involve more than a million US dollars. On top of these, we were dumbfounded by the scene when we saw everyone in the office had to monitor eight screens simultaneously!

Visit to Mizuho Bank - An eye-opening experienceCindy Cheung, Yannie Ho, Gary So, Amy Lai, Hazel Lee, Vicky Chong (S5)

The tour was undoubtedly an eye-opener as we were privileged to be able to take a glimpse of how a private bank operates. We were also endowed with a clearer understanding of what the banking career is like. In an encounter with a group of young high-flyers, we were inspired by how significant life-long learning can be in a career path. We all understood that only by advancing with time and being connected to society can we have a foothold in the workplace.

There is no limit in knowledge, nor our learning.

A masterpiece to honour: This article was also selected to receive the ‘Outstanding Student Reports’ award by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. Congratulations to our great writing team!

To raise students’ awareness of the world’s most deprived population, the Moral, Civic and Life Education Team, the Social Service Group and World Vision co-organised a fundraising activity called “Warming Syrian Hearts with a Red Packet X Sending Red Packets to the Universe” from 26 February 2018 to 3 March 2018. Many students, teachers and parents donated their red packets to support the event. In appreciation to their generous act, donors could vote for their ‘favourite’ teacher to dress in the school PE uniform for a whole school day on 7 March 2018. We managed to raise a total of HK$ 9451.4 finally. It is truly encouraging and heartwarming!

Community Service: Elder Academy

It was an unforgettable experience to join the soap making workshop of the Elder Academy Scheme. To my surprise, the elderly were smart and enthusiastic in learning new knowledge. Also, we could get along with them harmoniously and we found that many of them were talented but humble. It is never too old to learn. We highly appreciate their persistence and willingness to learn. Not only does this scheme help build a connection between the youth and the elderly, it also helps us have a better understanding of each other.

In the 3D printing workshop, we learnt how materials were joined and solidified under computer control to create a three-dimensional object. First, we learnt how to design the shell of an object. Successive layers of materials were then laid on the shell until the object was created. It is a novel experience of interacting with the elderly and learning together with them. Despite their age, they showed as strong initiative as we did throughout the workshop. The aims of the Elder Academy Scheme are to promote continuous learning among the elderly and inter-generational harmony, and surely we had them achieved!

Extra-Curricular ActivitiesTo enrich campus life and to provide students with an all-round experience, the school strives to offer a vast array of student activities and competitions, such as sports events, music programmes, drama performances, and debate contests, etc.. This year, the school has won numerous first-ever prizes and seized golden opportunities to perform publicly.

Internally, the school has organized inter-class competitions to strengthen the cohesiveness wi th in and among each class whereas externally, inter-school senior form committees have been formed with Munsang College and held social events for alumni and student leaders.

One feature of the current crop of youngsters that excels over the older generations is their ability to liaise with others. This enables them to get the opportunities not just to have fun, but to learn and grow through the experience and expertise of others. A community with almost a thousand people is certainly the ideal place to start with.

With this in mind, the House System was launched in September 2016. Four Houses with names after four major Biblical figures — Isaiah, Moses, Samuel, and Caleb — form the basic structure of the House System. All students from S1 to S6 are allocated into the four Houses, each with a committee formed by representatives from each Form, with the aim of enhancing vertical integration by providing opportunities for younger students to learn from the invaluable experience and knowledge of their big brothers and sisters, while nurturing the leadership skills of the senior students.

Under the guidance of eight experienced teachers who dutifully take up the posts of Heads of Houses, our first batch of House Committees took up the daunting task of leading over 200 schoolmates in each House to participate in various activities. Talents of different students have been taken care of, with a wide variety of activities having been held. These include sports events like the Annual Athletic Meet as well as dodgeball, football and basketball competitions; cultural activities like debate, quiz on general knowledge, singing contests and even calligraphy competition.

Through these activities, we hope to provide more colours to the school life of students. And we take the expression literally as well, as students may choose to wear their respective House T-shirts as school uniforms, brimming the whole campus with the four vibrant colours. Now in the second year of the House System, we hope every student can paint their school life with their own mix of colourful splashes.
