    Dear Friends,

    The countdown for the ISPRS Mel-bourne Congress has begun. The re-cent research and scienc progressachieved since 2008 in the elds ofISPRS will be presented during the

    event. The Congress consists of sev-eral technical and social meengs in-cluding a long day Youth Forum and all

    week long social acvies for SC.

    On the other hand, it is me to evaluate the past four yearsof ISPRS Student Consorum acvies. We received a greatresponse to our calls of online survey parcipaon. Thesurvey results will provide what has been appreciated mostby our members since 2008 but also will give clues in which

    direcons SC should connue in order to meet the needs ofour peers. I would like to thank to the ones who spent theirvaluable me for a beer SC. The results will be publishedonline and presented during the Melbourne Congress.

    In addion to the current eorts, SC is seeking new mem-bers and volunteers to carry the ag in the next term. Thecurrent SC Board will hand over the mission to the electedBoard during the General Assembly during the Youth Fo-rum. If you are willing to for such volunteer acvies withinthe SC Network, we will be glad to hear more from you and

    your ideas with possible contribuons for the next term.

    and you can discuss youroutcomes with them. Ihave aended every IS-PRS Congress since the1972 event in Oawa,Canada and I am surethis has beneted my ca-reer.

    What are the most im-

    portant recent developments in remote sensing and

    GIS in Australia? In which domain is there an empha-

    sis at the moment?

    There is an acve private sector in Australia whichis responsible for the majority of surveying andmapping, including GIS data acquision and man-agement. The private mapping industry is smallbut very acve especially because of the rapid

    developments in mining. This work now uses thelatest digital cameras for orthophoto producon.The acquision of lidar for DEM determinaonas well as for forest management is also growingrapidly. A range of remotely sensed data is nowbeing collected for environmental managementpurposes including for carbon accounng. CORSnetworks based on Global Navigaon Satellite Sys-tems (GNSS) are developing throughout the coun-try and hence GNSS systems are becoming an inte-gral part of posioning.

    Dr. John Trinder

    Dr. John Trinder is an emeritus professor of Photogrammetry and Computer Assisted Mapping in the School of Surveying and Spaal Informaon Systems at the Uni-

    versity of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He was president of ISPRS from 2000-2004, and has been acvely involved with the organizaon before and aer

    these years. He is also an honourary member of ISPRS. Among other awards he has won for his research papers, he was awarded the Spaal Sciences Instutess

    Eminent Persons Award in Australia in 2004.

    Can you explain us what is your research eld (what

    are you working on) at the moment?

    I have a research project with another sta memberat the School of Surveying and SIS at UNSW as well aswith a qualied forester with experience in lidar, on de-veloping soware for processing airborne lidar for ana-lyzing forest parameters. This can be applied in in thefuture to forestry applicaons that use full waveform

    lidar. As well, I have several postgraduate studentsstudying machine learning techniques for extracng in-formaon from spaceborne and aerial images togetherand combining it with lidar data. We are also workingon several aspects of full waveform lidar for forest pa-rameter characterizaon, including theorecal studiesof mulple reectances of lidar signals in vegetaon.

    Why did you decide for this profession in the rst

    place (maybe you can tell us something more about

    your rst steps)?

    Ones career opons can never be predicted. I startedo being a land surveyor, with the thought that I likedworking in the open air. This suited me unl I becamequalied, but then I looked for further study oponsbecause I wanted to learn more than I had learnedin my undergraduate degree. I was fortunate to wina scholarship to study photogrammetry at ITC in theNetherlands, which meant that I was set for a careerpath in photogrammetry. Perhaps in todays languageit should be referred to as a career path in satellite and

    aerial imaging. Following the compleon of my MScat ITC, I was oered a posion at lecturer at UNSW,

    which included PhD studies and ulmately resulted inmy being appointed as Professor and Head of Schoolof Surveying and SIS. Having directed my career pathto photogrammetry, also led to my interests in remotesensing, although I have concentrated my work morein photogrammetric aspects. Therefore you can neverpredict how your career opons will develop, but youshould always grasp the opportunies that are present-

    ed to you.

    What advices would you give to students and young

    professionals regarding successful career?

    Grasp all opportunies that become available andcan improve your career.

    Take every opportunity to learn from your superiors

    Connue to develop your knowledge, since methodsand technologies are changing rapidly in the spaal in-formaon elds. This includes aending conferences

    such as ISPRS, Summer Schools etc.

    In your opinion how important is parcipaon of

    young people to internaonal professional events like

    Summer schools, Congresses, workshops, etc? What

    do you think are the benets of such acvies to

    youth and to profession?

    As I said above, I think it is very important. It is at theseevents that you hear of the latest developments intechnologies and methods used in photogrammetry,

    remote sensing and spaal informaon sciences. It ishow you learn about what other researchers are doing

    A range of topics is being researched at universies.Informaon extracon from aerial and satellite im-agery is being studied for map updang. GIS is be-ing studied in relaon to a number of applicaons,

    including implicaons of posion in medicine. Animportant source of research funds is the Coopera-ve Research Centre for Spaal Informaon (CRC-SI) which is located in Melbourne, and research isbeing undertaken under its auspices in most statesin Australia and in New Zealand. The researchundertaken in this Centre is applicaon orientedand it involves a signicant number of companies(SMEs Small and Medium Enterprises). It also haslinks to overseas research groups.

    This year Australia, Melbourne, will host 22nd ISPRS

    Congress. Is this reected on your everyday work,

    since your country will host the most important event

    of the profession?

    I was not called on to assist with the management ofthe ISPRS Congress in the early days. However, I be-came involved from about the middle of last year be-cause I was elected as Chair of the Remote Sensing andPhotogrammetry Commission of the Surveying and Spa-

    al Science Instute (SSSI) in Australia. Also, the 16thARSPC, the two yearly Australian Remote Sensing andPhotogrammetry Conference, will also be held in con-juncon with the ISPRS Congress, so I have a close inter-est in the management of the whole event and am nowon the management commiee. I certainly hope thatthe whole event is a great success and that as many stu-dents as possible can visit Melbourne for this importantevent.

    Free and Open Source Soware for Geomacsby Thanasis Moysiadis

    Free and open source soware is appreciated by many geosciensts for educaonal and research purposes.This is mainly due to the ease of use, the funconality, the free-use status and in most cases the non-cost

    of such soware. The rapid advancement of computer technologies leads towards cheaper and more so-phiscated geospaal soluons. Most of the processing in photogrammetry, remote sensing, geographicalinformaon systems and in other earth-related disciplines, depends directly on the technological advance-ment and use of special soware. Soware is needed to collect, process and analyze geospaal data and tovalidate its results.

    The aim of this arcle is to disnguish the types of free/open source soware that can be used to best ef-fect for educaonal or research purposes, rather than enumerang the exisng ones available. Proprietarysoware, namely commercial soware, exists to support the aforemenoned disciplines but it has strict li-cense and distribuon criteria. Nevertheless, universies, educaonal instutes, companies and individuals

    oen fail to nancially support such soware. In this case, free and open source soware provides nearlythe same capabilies at no cost. Even though they may not fully cover the funconality and processes ofproprietary soware, they support a series of analycal processes.

    Free soware means free-use status rather than non-cost soware. This means that the user is able to pro-cess, analyze, edit, modify and distribute such soware. Usually, free soware is characterized according tothe following main criteria:

    use of the soware regardless of the aim of the research project

    study of the way of use of the soware according to the users needs - access to the source codeis essenal

    modicaon of the soware and ability to publish it in the research community - access to thesource code is essenal

    ability to publish it redistribute copies of the soware

    Each user is entled to the above acons either privately or publicly without any prior noce, license orauthorizaon. Free soware does not necessarily mean non-commercial soware; therefore, it can becommercially used and distributed. It is somemes the case that naonal regulaons prevent users fromcopying and distribung such soware. As already menoned, modicaons to free soware are beingmade, provided that the source code is available. Frequent code modicaons usually include free modules

    merged into the soware. If the license policy does not provide the user with copyright authorizaon, thisis not free soware. Soware manuals are free to download since they form an irreplaceable part of thesoware.

    Referring to free soware, descripons such as open or for free should be avoided, since theyimply the cost rather than its use.

    Open source soware is not the same as free soware because open source does not necessarilymean for free, and in some cases their licenses are restricve. Therefore, open source soware

    does not comply with the above criteria for free soware. Almost all free soware is open sourceand almost all open source soware is free.

    A reference is made to other kinds of soware for a comparave evaluaon according to the usersneeds.

    Public domain soware describes those without any license or copyright. This means thesoware is not patented. Since the source code is in the public domain, this is a special cat-egory of non-patented free soware.

    Non-free soware describes soware whose use is not for free, the so-called semi-free and

    proprietary soware. Semi-free soware describes soware whose use is not for free; however, its license allowsa personal use for distribuon or modicaon purposes.

    Proprietary soware describes soware whose use is not for free or semi-free. Its use, dis-tribuon or modicaon is strictly forbidden without prior license.

    Freeware soware can be distributed but not modied, since the source code is not avail-able. Therefore, it is not free soware.

    Shareware soware is licensed soware, distributed to the users for a specic me period.Aer that period a cost is charged.

    The main dierences between free and open soware as well as the benets of using them in theeducaonal or commercial sector are outlined. A comparison is made with other soware catego-ries to pinpoint the dierences before incorporang them into research or educaonal acvies inGeomacs.

    Full waveform hyperspectral LiDAR for terrestrial laser

    scanning

    We present the design of a full waveform hyperspectral

    light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and the rst dem-

    onstrations of its applications in remote sensing. The

    novel instrument produces a 3D point cloud with spectral

    backscattered reectance data. This concept has a sig-nicant impact on remote sensing and other elds where

    target 3D detection and identication is crucial, such as

    civil engineering, cultural heritage, material processing,

    or geomorphological studies. As both the geometry and

    spectral information on the target are available from a

    single measurement, this technology will extend the

    scope of imaging spectroscopy into spectral 3D sensing.

    To demonstrate the potential of the instrument in the re-

    mote sensing of vegetation, 3D point clouds with back-

    scattered reectance and spectral indices are presentedfor a specimen of Norway spruce.
