    PAST EVENTS REPORTS

    Satellite - Based Photogrammetry, Cuba

    by Emmanuel Baltsavias

This workshop was co-organised by ISPRS and theCuban ISPRS Ordinary member with the supportof Selper (The Lan American Society of Remote

Sensing and Spaal Informaon Systems, an IS-PRS Regional member) and was nancially sup-ported by our Cuban hosts and Selper. It was partof the 6 Internaonal Congress on Geomacs, which took place in Havana, February 10 - 13,with ca. 185 parcipants from over 15 countries. The lecturers were Thierry Toun, Canada Centerfor Remote Sensing, and Gordon Staples, MDA,Canada. The presentaons by the lecturers wereexcellent both in content and didaccally, and

there was a simultaneous translaon in Spanish. The main topic, presented by Thierry Toun, wasthe generaon of mapping products from bothopcal and microwave satellite sensors. The fo-cus was on high-resoluon sensors. This topic ofgenerang and updang 3D topographic maps isvery relevant for Cuba and many other countries

Thierry Toun begging Gordon Sta-ples to give him freely Radarsat-2data, shortly before trying the fa-mous Cuban mojito. He succeededaer buying Gordon a few mojitos. This is how business is done

that have limited nancial resources and where airborne sensors are non-existent orlimited. Gordon Staples introduced the new Canadian Radarsat-2 sensor, and focusedon new excing possibilies and applicaons by using radar polarimetry, currently one ofthe hoest topics of research in microwave remote sensing. Finally, Thierry Toun gave

a short demonstraon of the polarimetric processing tool, within the soware packageOrthoEngine of PCI, Canada. The lecturers also distributed 4 CDs with material associ-ated to the workshop. The material of the workshop presentaons will soon be placedat the ISPRS WEB site (www.isprs.org) under Educaon, Tutorials. The 32 parcipantsfrom Cuba and six other Lan American countries were very sased and acvely par-cipated with quesons and discussions. Our Cuban hosts were extremely helpful andgentle to the foreign parcipants and lecturers enjoyed the air of Havana and the Cubanmusic, dance and culture. This was an example of an excellent internaonal cooperaonfor capacity building to the benet of countries and regions, where people do not havethe nancial resources to parcipate in expensive scienc events. It was also an acon

within the plan of ISPRS for increased involvement in Lan America and its commitmentfor internaonal cooperaon, educaon and training, parcularly for the students.

During the latest ARGEOS meeng, which was held on the 6th of December2009, a short presentaon of the Student Consorum was made. Presenta-on was represented to students studying geomacs at universies in Aus-

tria, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland. ARGEOS was founded in1970 in order to enhance the educaon at the universies. Every year AR-GEOS prepare two events in each semester at one of the member university. Each event consists of four days of lectures, working groups, subject relatedand scenic trips and pares. The last meeng was held in December 2008 atTU Berlin - Germany. A chance to become involved in this valuable meengwhich around 150 students parcipated was given to one of the SC boardmembers, Ahmet Sengul. The presentaon lasted for 10 minutes during ple-nary meeng and it was an excellent opportunity to inform young germanspeaking students about our student organizaon.

ongoing aims and acvies:We are planning to start closer relaons with other StudentsAssociaons to explore new elds of interests. There are a lot of acvies regarding to ISPRS WG VI/5 and SCSummer School in Warsaw 2009. At the moment more than 60parcipants have registered for the event. Some Student Consorum representaves are going to parcipatein IGSM 2009. Hope it will be a fruiul me for knowledge andexperience exchange. One nal note. If you have not noced, I would like to inform youthat our Student Consorum network is grooving up. How to Share Informaon on SC Website

by Mete Ercan Pakdil and Ahmet engl

The rst version of the members area served basic features, however, nowa-days members area has many unique features that parallel SC missions where

students and youths can exchange informaon easily and get together from allover the world. In the previous year the database had approximately 60 reg-istered members and the number is increasing day by day with your support, today we reached more than 160 members. The main idea is to collect all the members on the same plaorm where every-one has the opportunity to share their ideas, useful informaon, several oppor-tunies like travel grants, foundaons or job oers, upcoming acvies such asSummer School, internaonal conferences, workshops etc.As a registered member of the website, you are welcome to leave a commenton members messages or on the message board and even comments about

our website. We will be happy to see your contribuons. To achieve easy exchange of informaon, rstly we exchanged tradional anddisorganised e-mail groups with message boards and secondly we developed aprivate message system for peer to peer messaging. Step by step instrucons onhow to use these new tools can be nd here.

    ESA FOR STUDENTS

EO Educaonal Acvies of the European Space Agencyby Vasileios Kalogirou (RSAC c/o ESA)

One of the most important acvies of a space agency is to make space science and technol-ogy available to a wide audience and inform the various stakeholders industry, academiaand the public - of the dierent ways they may benet from recent achievements and devel-

opments. The European Space Agency ESA is addressing quesons such as why these groupsshould take an interest in space and why they should be involved.Under this percepon, the European Space Agency builds its own pillars for a knowledge -based society, in order to ensure the existence of a high - level qualied workforce and topromote the benets of developments in space technology. Starng from very young agesto university - level students, the Agency is implemenng its Educaonal plan that includesworldwide teaching and outreach acvies. This year, ESAs agenda includes EO training courses in many countries (i.e. Austria, Romania, Peru, Argenna etc.). The next training course will take placebetween the 19th 22th April in Vienna on the European Geosciences Union (EGU) Symposium called GIFT - Geosciences Informaon for Teachers.More at: hp://gi.egu.eu/gi-home.html

As a response to the needs of educaon, ESA developed its own Earth Ob-servaon soware called LEOWorks, which is also supported by a seriesof various tutorials covering a large variety of remote sensing applicaonsmonitoring vegetaon, glaciers and volcanoes. In order to improve sowareunderstanding training material is connuously updated with recent exer-cises that cover more advanced topics like SAR interferometry and polarim-etry. Although the LEOWorks package and its accompanying training materialare targeng secondary - school or undergraduate students, the sowareincludes a powerful image processing tool, able to perform more advanced

processing operaons. Moreover the package includes some standard GISfunconality. The new version of LEOWorks v4.0 builds upon the exisng ESAtoolboxes (BEAM and the recently developed NEST) and adopts a java - basedopen source philosophy. The rst major release of LEOWorks 4.0 is foreseenfor June 2009.

For more informaon about LEOWorksplease contact Dr. Steen Dransfeld

The author acknowledges Dr. Steen Dransfeld and Dr. Francesco Sar fromESA/ESRIN for their contribuon and acceptance to release the above infor-maon.
