    For government

ISO standards draw on international expertise and experience and aretherefore a vital resource for governments when developing regulations.

National governments can make ISO standards a regulatory requirement(remember ISO standards themselves are voluntary). This has a number ofbenefits:

Expert opinion - ISO standards are developed by experts. By integrating anISO standard into national regulation, governments can benefit from theopinion of experts without having to call on their services directly.

Opening up world trade - ISO standards are international and adopted bymany governments. By integrating ISO standards into national regulation, governments help to ensure that requirements for imports and exportsare the same the world over, therefore facilitating the movement of

goods, services and technologies from country to country.

ISO 9000 was first published in 1987. It was

based on the BS 5750 series of standards

from BSI that were proposed to ISO in 1979.

However, its history can be traced back some

twenty years before that, to the publication of

the United States Department ofDefense standard in 1959.

    Criticisms

A common criticism of ISO 9000 and 9001 isthe amount of money, time, and paperworkrequired for registration.

Mislead companies into thinking thatcertification means better quality

If you just want the certificate on the wall,

chances are you will create a paper systemthat doesn't have much to do with the wayyou actually run your business.
