The award winner “Me’a Kai: The Food and Flavours of the Pacifi c” was written by a pacific passionate chef Robert Olivier, with a aim to connect Pacific agriculture to the region’s tourism sector. Me’a Kai stunned the food world by winning the top prize ‘Best Cookbook in the World 2010’ at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Paris, and was considered to be the ‘Pulitzer’ of cookbooks beating books from NOMA and the New York Times. Robert’s love for Pacific Island food continues and he was recently the headline chef at the South Pacific Food and Wine Festival alongside Peter Gordon, Michael Meredith and Willie Harcourt-Cooze. Robert was the keynote speaker at the Frankfurt Book Fair this year and is now working with the Samoan Government who has commissioned him to write a National cookbook for Samoa. Robert has a ten-year plan to promote the unique cuisine of each country in the Pacific, including Vanuatu to celebrate its regional diversity. One of the ways is through Real Pasifik TV who were in-country this week. The television series showcases and promotes the individual unique Islands of the Pacific in a positive, new and contemporary way that focuses on food and culture. The objective of Real Pasifik is to show tourists, that alongside beautiful beaches and friendly people, they can enjoy fantastic food and cultural experiences. The series will be hosted by chef Robert Oliver and is an epic gastronomic journey that takes viewers to extraordinary people, ancient cultures and into the heart of a food revolution promoting food tourism and distinctive cuisine. VTO wishes Robert and all involved in Real Pasifik TV all the best of success and acknowledges everyone for the efforts in promoting Vanuatu and the pacific as a whole.

Air Vanuatu celebrates 25 years with huge discounts Media release: Air Vanuatu is celebrating 25 years of servicing the people of Vanuatu – and we’re all getting the presents. To mark the occasion, CEO Joseph Laloyer has slashed airfares for Vanuatu residents. “It’s time we gave back to the people who have supported us for 25 years,” Mr. Laloyer said. “Twenty five years is a long time in any business, but we’re really proud of our achievements. Air Vanuatu has slashed airfares from Vila to Auckland, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Noumea, Suva, Nadi, Tanna and Santo to just 20,000vt return plus taxes. Santo residents haven’t missed out – with Santo to Sydney, Brisbane and Vila also reduced to 20,000vt plus taxes return. The special fares are available throughout the year, but must be booked and paid for by 13 February. “We hope to sell at least 500 tickets in the next couple of weeks – our sales staff are looking forward to being flat out!” Mr. Laloyer said. Suppliers to the Hospitality Industry regarding the participation in Vanuatu’s own Hospitality Trade Expo. In March 2013 The Vanuatu Chefs Association are proposing to host the first, of what is expected to become an annual event, specifically tailored to the development of the hospitality industry within Vanuatu. The goal is to have all Trade Suppliers to the Hospitality Industry, in one location, over two days to showcase their products, highlight new products and hopefully introduce more customers. This will enable the Hospitality Industry to travel to Port Vila once a year to meet all Trade Suppliers. The Vanuatu Chefs and Food Handlers Association sees this as being cost effective, efficient, and profitable for all those involved. Duration will be two days, Wednesday-Thursday, 10.00am-4.00pm daily. Current proposed date March 27-28th. Location will be the showground between Chantilly’s on the Bay Hotel and Moorings Hotel (where the last two annual Vanuatu Chef’s Competition events have been held). Set up will be marquee style with power provided allowing companies to display & demonstrate their products. Cost is currently estimated to be between 10,000vt-60,000vt depending on marquee space & services required to cover the two days. The cost will include complementary tickets to a canapé evening. The canapé evening will be held on the last night to close the event, and will be hosted by Vanuatu Chefs Association National Culinary Team – giving them the opportunity to showcase their skills. Extra canapé tickets will be available for sale. The Vanuatu Chefs & Food Handlers Association will benefit from any profit from the event which will be used for further training, development and education of the young Chefs of Vanuatu. The Hospitality Industry will also be a beneficiary through better trained and educated staff. If you are interested in attending please email [email protected] before Monday the 4th of February 2013 together with any comments or suggestions you may have. As this is the first event for The Vanuatu Chefs & Food Handlers Association for 2013, space may be limited so we would encourage you to register your interest early. We would encourage you to please forward this letter on to as many other suppliers that you can think of just in case we have missed anyone. The more the merrier!
