Letter F rom The P resident Ocean & Chestnut Aves. Island Heights, New Jersey 08732 Ocean County Calendar of Events It’s been a hectic summer and fall looks to be just as busy! In the first week of September, the Board of Directors had their board meeting and installation of the new officers/trustees. We have a great group of people on our board this year who are all very dedicated to the advancement of the OCAG. However, our reopening plans have proven to be laborious, we could use some help in publicity (making posters, writing articles about our upcoming events for local publications, making short films with your i-phones of local events.) I’d love to hear from you!! My email address is below. It’s been a busy fall for our exhibitions. Hopefully you have either checked out the exhibitions in person or will take a browse through them on our website. There’s some truly outstanding work! In order for us to reopen, the Guild has put Health procedures in place for the safety of all. Adherence to these procedures is required of all who wish to continue coming to the building, as non compliance poses a liability risk for the Guild. We certainly want to be able to remain open. I hope everyone has a very productive fall and that you get as much artistic time as you want or need. Please feel free to contact me if you have any ideas or opportunities that you think the OCAG should pursue. “The Joy of the Still LifeThere is so much beauty in all of our lives. It is in the simple things around us. The colorful foods we eat, the

handwoven baskets made by artisans, the pottery, the flowers, plants and vegetables in our own backyards. These everyday objects make me want to tell the world I’m here, I see what you offer me. I feel alive and inquisitive when I look at you. Trying to capture the beauty of the everyday things I see is why I paint. Watercolor is a medium that permits me to play with the hardness of a garden trowel to the softness of

a pussy willow. It helps me create the rich deep purple in an eggplant and the muted shades and loose background colors of the “Still Life.” I choose to paint “Still Life” because I am always seeing new angles, shapes and perspective. They challenge me to capture what I can of their beauty. I try to capture the peace and tranquility of what I see and feel when painting them. They give me a reason to wake up every morning ready to tackle a new project. I hope that people viewing my show will feel some of what I try to capture.

“Wanderers”I always wanted to be an art teacher, so while in high school, I saved all of my electives for my senior year.

All of them were in art. At the fall show, I was creating a watercolor, when my instructor told me that it wasn’t too bad considering that I had no talent. I was devastated and became an elementary school teacher instead. I did that for thirty years.I didn’t pick up a brush for many decades. One year we had so many blizzards in northern NJ, that I bought

a painting magazine and bought some supplies. I was thrilled. For many years I dabbled in acrylics. I moved to Toms River five years ago. I stood on my porch and said

to no one in particular, “I want a watercolor teacher.” About two months later, I noticed a woman, taking a picture of my front porch. She was embarrassed but explained that she was my neighbor, a watercolor artist, and she wanted to paint my porch. That was over three years ago, and I’ve taken weekly lessons from Rose Sinatra ever since. The first art contest that I entered was last year’s OCC Senior Show. I received an honorable mention in watercolor and was thrilled. I’m an interfaith minister and have given over 80 paintings away. It feels like what I’m called to do. This is my first gallery exhibit and I’m thrilled.

THE SALE OF THE CONTENTS OF THE GRACE HOUSEBy Joan Adams

I don’t remember the date but I do remember what the weather was like. It was a beautiful sunny, Saturday morning. The OCAG members were ready for a yard sale after talking about it for quite some time - organizing it in our minds, pricing articles and deciding where we would hold the sale. Guild members started early bringing out articles for sale and placing them on the lawn. Of course, there were a few large articles left in the house. I have a memory that there was a piano in the parlor which my friend Leah Reese bought. (Her husband Bill was an officer of OCAG at the time and helping at the sale.)People came early to view the items but we were ready. I don’t remember

how we advertised the yard sale or how much money we received, but I do remember it was a success. All members worked very hard that long day.Several of us purchased some items, as did I. I don’t have any excuse

or reason why I bought certain items except that my purchases helped to increase the amount we earned at the sale. Here is the list of what I bought:

    • 8 very, very old incandescent light bulbs. (Why?)• 6 small embossed brass bowls• An Atwater Kent wooden radio cabinet on four legs and without a

working radio. (Who would want that? Really?)I don’t remember what the other members bought but my treasures were

unique, weren’t they? I took the Atwater Kent wooden radio cabinet home with the light bulbs and brass bowls. After a while, the radio cabinet was moved another fine home. It did not fit in with my decor. I was hoping it would change its appearance to become a beautiful piece of furniture. Alas, for me it never did, but the new owners were very happy!I kept the light bulbs and brass bowls for years after the sale until Super

Storm Sandy took our house and the light bulbs and the brass bowls with it. Gone forever, but not forgotten. But an experience and pieces I would always remember. I still wonder now and again what made me pick them out as the things I wanted to take home. Finally, we Guild members thought this was a new start and a permanent

place for us to set our easels, have meetings and art demonstrations. The yard sale was worth all the time and work. We were so grateful to get the beautiful Victorian house and its contents donated to us by Mrs. Grace, who I do remember. So, so lucky! We were on our way to a happy new beginning.
