Map of the Fort-de-France Le Lamentin geothermal field

• The geothermal reservoir is developed along a NW-SE trending fault.

• Thermal fluids are flowing from NW to SE. Their origin is supposed to be related to the nearby, 0,35 My-old Pitons du Carbet volcano.

• Temperature of geothermal fluid ranges between 85-90°C.

• There is a good match between the location of the geothermal resource and the main industrial and commercial area of Martinique.

• It is a good opportunity for direct uses of the local geothermal resource.

Energy demand in the area of Fort-de-France Le Lamentin

Figures on yearly energy demand for cooling and heating in the area of

Fort-de-France Le Lamentin according to a

recent survey (TransEnergies, 2015)

Today, this energy demand is mainly covered by fossil fuels and electricity (from fossil fuels).

Proximity of energy demand and geothermal resource encourages direct uses of geothermal energy in replacement of fossil fuels and electricity.

Expected benefits of geothermal energy use

The use of the local geothermal resource should provide benefits to the environment and economy of the area : Reduce fossil energy use and dependence; Reduce emission of greenhouse gases and pollutants; Reduce and stabilize energy price.

Other advantages of geothermal energy use

• Possible combination with other local renewable energy sources (biomass, solar, marine energy);

• Introduction to a better land management policy and a better energy efficiency, with relocation of activities in accordance with their energy demand;

• New business opportunity with duplication in other Caribbean islands.

Some challenges to be overcome

• Sustainability of a geothermal doublet (one production well and one reinjection well) sited in a fractured reservoir ;

• Adequacy between temperature of geothermal resources and energy supply required for district cooling and/or heating;

• Combination with other renewable energy sources (solar, biomass, marine) if additional energy supply is required;

• Feasibility of distribution network in urban areas; • Reliability of geothermal energy compare to electricity-based cooling and

heating • Competitiveness of geothermal energy compared to others renewable and

fossil energy sources; • Environmental integration of drilling/testing operations and of the

geothermal power plant.

The on-going pilot project of geothermal district cooling and heating supported by CCG (Compagnie Caribéenne de Géothermie)

The CCG company (Compagnie Caribéenne de Géothermie) is carried out a Pilot Project with the support of the Regional Council of Martinique, Ademe (Agence de l’Energie et de Maîtrise de l’Energie) and SMEM (Syndicat Mixte de l’Electricité en Martinique). Its objectives are to check the feasibility of a geothermal district cooling and heating system sited in the Fort-de-France Le Lamentin area. Its main phases are (from 2014 to 2018) :

• A market study including the search for large energy consumers or networks of several energy consumers;

• A technical feasibility study including the siting of the Pilot Project, the design of a geothermal doublet, the search for the most appropriate technology for heating and cooling, the search for possible combinations with other local, renewable energy sources providing an extra energy supply if needed;

• Drilling of a geothermal doublet (one production and one injection well); • Long-term testing of the geothermal loop to check the energy output, the

reservoir sustainability, the reservoir injectivity, the fluid scaling potential, etc… • The construction of a pilot geothermal plant and testing.
