planet's natural beauty for generations to come. Wildlife trafficking is also a national security, public health and an economic issue that is critical to countries and communities worldwide,” Ambassador Olson said before the film screening.

“This film tells the snow leopard's real story – a story that is ultimately true of all wildlife everywhere. It's a story of interaction and, at times, conflict between humans and animals. This story demonstrates how a rare creature's existence depends on sustained cooperation among local communities, organizations, the private sector, and government authorities,” he added.

Ambassador Olson announced two new sources of US funding for wildlife conservation in Pakistan. The new USAID-

funded program with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Snow Leopard Trust will improve cooperation among Bhutan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal and Pakistan on snow leopard conservation and climate change adaptation in Asia's high mountain landscapes, while the Ambassador's Fund in Pakistan will focus on wildlife conservation projects in local communities.

The Vice Chancellor Dr. Masoom Yasinzai thanked the Ambassador for choosing QAU to celebrate Wildlife Conservation Day. He emphasized that managing wildlife can provide rural communities with both tangible and intangible benefits.

“Tangible benefits include improved wildlife-related recreation and income. Activities may include hunting opportunities, outdoor recreation involving wildlife, and production of wildlife and associated products.

As an example trophy hunting alone is generating US$ 150-200,000 annually in Gilgit-Baltistan. Intangible benefits include excitement derived from observing wildlife, satisfaction from providing quality habitat for these species, and pride and recognition for hosting such iconic species,” he added.

Dr. Yasinzai said that wildlife/biodiversity parks are an important tool in conservation as they provide a venue for public education, on-campus research, and facilitate ex-situ preservation of threatened species. “QAU has already established a botanical garden,we also desire to complement it with a wildlife park.”

US Ambassador Richard Olson has reaffirmed strong commitment of the United States to wildlife conservation in Pakistan. He was speaking at a ceremony held to mark Wildlife Conservation Day in Pakistan, co-hosted by the Department of Animal Sciences, Quaid-i-Azam University.

Students, activists, and government officials watched “Snow Leopard: Beyond the Myth”, a documentary filmed in Pakistan by filmmaker Nisar Malik. After the film, they participated in a panel discussion with Pakistan wildlife experts to discuss important issues like wildlife conservation, human-animal conflict, animal trafficking, and solutions.

“Wildlife trafficking affects all of us. Protecting wildlife means protecting our

The Minister said that it has now become more obvious than ever that technology is directly linked to economy. “We should learn from our previous mistakes and make full use of our potential to create a scientific culture,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor Dr. Masoom Yasinzai said that education in our country deserves more attention to compete rest of the world. “Today the role of universities has changed. Universities must assume the role of innovation promoting knowledge hubs with an ultimate aim of promotion of indigenous development.”

He congratulated the conference organizers and university administration for conducting an event which has provided an ideal

opportunity to researchers, academicians and students.

Highlighting achievements and future plans of the Department of Biochemistry, its Chairman Dr. Salman Malik said that the Department is contributing towards education and research training of MSc, MPhil and PhD graduates since 2006.

“So far, the Department has produced 267 MSc and 286 MPhil students while 51 scholars have completed their PhD studies. A considerable increase in the periodical journals and publications by the Department is also worth-mentioning. These have increased from only eight papers in 2006 to more than 70 in 2011.”

“Scientific culture having dynamic, world-class and relevant research is crucial for socio-economic uplift of the country.”This was stated by Federal Minister for Science and Technology Mir Changez Khan Jamali while addressing the concluding session of National Conference on Trends in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology held at Quaid-i-Azam University.

almost saturated, therefore we need to introduce alternative and innovative ways. “It is heartening to know that all topics included in the Summer School for deliberation are extremely relevant to issues that we face today.”

Dr. Asghari Bano, Chairperson, Department of Plant Sciences said that Pakistan has a rich biodiversity of plants, animals and microbes, but unfortunately it is facing threats of deforestation, pollution, population, over exploitation of natural resources, invasive

alien species, environmental problems and population pressure. “There is an urgent need to protect biodiversity for future generations of Pakistan by adopting practical measures,” she added.

Dr. Hans Joerg Jacobsen, Head, Institute of Plant Genetics, University of Hanover, Germany said that the world has to master several difficult challenges like rapid population growth, decreasing arable land, climate change as well as decreasing fossil fuel reserves.

“Therefore, we need novel plants, which can produce more from less land with lower inputs in water, fertilizers and pesticides as the use of excessive pesticides or fertilizers are not sustainable and water availability will decrease in large parts of the world” he said.

“We also need to bridge the knowledge gap between developed and developing countries as the developing countries need to rely on their own capacities in order to be able to guarantee locally accepted and demand driven food and feed products” he added.

Ms. Ursula Saarbeck, Chief Executive Cultural Section, in her detailed presentation, highlighted services and opportunities provided by German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to the scholars, academicians and scientists in Pakistan.
