Welcome back to 2017! While it feels like so long ago, I
hope that everyone had a Happy & Safe festive season
and now in the full swing of the New Year, as we are
here at Isisford State School!
We are a little late with our first newsletter for 2017 as
our school has been undergoing a Server upgrade, which
has meant we have been working with no Internet
connections, printing ability or Network access. While a
little inconvenient, the process is necessary for us to
keep our technology resources up to date and working
to the best of its ability.
Leadership
This year our process around leadership appointment of
our student leaders has been altered, whereby students
had to nominate and meet a criteria to be eligible to be a
student leader. This process has been completed and I
am happy to say that Makybe Edwards and Skyla Jackson
have been appointed for 2017 as our student leaders.
Sip & Crunch
The school will be supplying a fruit break for the
students each day again in 2017. Students are still
encouraged to bring another piece of fruit with them to
school, as we should not only be eating one piece of fruit
each day. Fruit break occurs at 10am each day, and
students are only permitted to eat a piece of fruit.

Clean Up Australia Day
Clean Up Australia Day is upon us, and as a school we
will be partaking in this event a little early. Isisford
students and staff will participate in the Clean Up
Australia Schools Day on Friday March 3rd
at 9:00am.
We will clean around our school grounds, the route to
the park and in the park itself. Any community
members are welcome to join us on this day.
Our full school review — an opportunity to have your
say!
Our school is scheduled for a school review on
Monday 13th
and Tuesday 14th
March 2017.
The Department of Education and Training regularly
reviews Queensland state schools to ensure they’re
delivering quality education to students. The reviews
are conducted by the department’s School
Improvement Unit.
The reviews do not rate or compare schools, but
provide teachers and other staff with independent
feedback to help them continue to improve learning
outcomes for students. All schools have a review at
least every four years. Key findings from the review
will be made available to parents and the community
on the school’s website. The review team would like
to hear from our school community and I encourage
anyone who is interested to have their say. Your
feedback is important and will help us continue to
deliver a great education for students.
Feedback can be provided to the review team by
phone or in person. All feedback is confidential. Please
contact the school office if you are interested in
speaking to a reviewer. Alternatively, you can register
your interest by emailing [email protected].
More information about the review process is
available from the department’s website at
www.schoolreviews.eq.edu.au.
Breakfast & Homework Club
Every Friday morning at 8am students are invited to
breakfast club. We vary our breakfast options each
week, with the odd exception we aim to stay healthy.
This time is for students to catch up on any homework
that may be missed before it needs to be handed in.
Students are not permitted to play until 8:30 as
ordinary school days, they must remain in the eating
area with staff. Quiet drawing or activities can be
brought from the classroom, or homework only.
IMPACT Projects
IMPACT Centre is run by the Brisbane School of Distance
Ed. They are programs designed for students in Year 3
and up as differentiated learning. They offer booster
programs to support improvement, or they offer
extension programs to further student’s abilities. To
start the year we have a Digital Technologies program
for year 5 and 6 and we have Reading and Maths for
year 3.
Bullying – No Way!
The National Day of Action against Bullying is on March
17th
. Our students will participate in some lessons
around social/emotional learning and Anti-Bullying
messages in the lead up to this day. We will then also
have a special breakfast to recognise the significance of
the day and take a stand together! On Friday March 17th
students are allowed to wear orange to school, as we
participate in this day ☺
Netball & Touch football Skills Day
It is that time of the year again when Longreach Distance
Ed hold their Netball and Touch skills day for students to
come and learn new skills. Every year they invite small
schools to participate over the two days. Day one will
focus on skills and on day two we will have round robin
games using skills learned. Please keep an eye out for
the permission notes and information.

What’s happening in the teaching world?
Principal Business Meetings:
At the commencement of the year, we have Student
Free Day’s where staff engage with professional
development or learning. Principals from the Outback
Advantage Cluster got together to work on a
curriculum focus, as well as, leadership capability and
building.
The curriculum focus of these days was shared with
our cluster teachers, and we looked closely at the
Australian Curriculum and the way in which we are
delivering that curriculum to our students. These
workshops were hosted and facilitated by the Central
Queensland Australian Curriculum Advisor.
6 Pillars of Reading:
During our Student Free Day’s, our teacher aides and
our teachers attended a Reading professional
development in relation to Reading. The day was
spent looking at the 6 key elements involved in the
teaching of reading, along with producing a well-
balanced reading program in our schools.
Essential Skills of Classroom Management
During our Student Free Day’s, our teacher aides and
our teachers also attending a professional
development around Behaviour Management. This
day was presented by our new regional Guidance
Officer Miss Jolie Hannah. Jolie delivered the
professional development around the Essential Skills
that are a ‘toolkit’ for managing behaviour in schools.
Week 3:
This week Mrs Waterford and I took two days off
class, to sit and plan for the next Semester of school.
Over these days we looked at important strategies for
teaching such as our curriculum implementation, our
classroom timetables, our collection of student data
and our writing and spelling programs. At this present
time, we are very happy with the routine we have
going in our school around teaching and learning with
some very valuable learning happening each day. It is
also fantastic to have the students so engaged and
bringing their best attitudes to school each day.
I will also be away on the 1st
, 2nd
and 3rd
March
participating in the QLD State Schools Principals
Conference.
