Three scanners, one goal:Precisely fitting restorations

The D104 Series of 3D scanning systems is the 5th generation of dental scanners offered by Imetric. The first generation was introduced in 2006 based on over 20 years of experience Imetric had gained in industrial metrology.

Continued development and optimizations ultimately led to the introduction of the three scanning systems that are currently available: IScan D104, IScan D104ao and IScan D104i. They are designed for the digitization of im-pressions and dental models – from a single prepped tooth stump to a full-arch multi-implant model.

The basic model IScan D104 is recommended for the CAD/CAM production of inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns and bridges, and removable dentures. The IScan D104ao (advanced option) extends this capability to implant abutments and multi-implant restorations.

IScan D104i offers ultimate precision and is therefore also suited for the digitization of multi-implant models, allowing the produc-tion of passive fitting, large-span, screw-re-tained structures.

The IScan D104 and IScan D104ao are fully upgradable to ensure your scanner not only meets your current needs, but also has the ability to meet your future needs.

Proprietary technology for topresults

The dental laboratory scanners offered by Imetric are manufactured in Switzerland and use high-end components from Swiss and European suppliers. The devices with open interfaces combine a proprietary heterodyne phase-shift structured light technology with photogrammetry.

Photogrammetry is responsible for the high accuracy achieved with the scanners and is used both in calibration and during data ac-quisition. The heterodyne phase shift delivers

better data quality than standard structured light methods applied in many other dental scanners.

Another benefit lies in the independence of the measurement accuracy from mechanical components. In many 3D scanning systems, the accuracy decreases over time from me-chanical parts that are affected by wear. Due to the special measurement concept used in the IScan D104 Series, these effects have no impact on the accuracy of data acquisition. This results in the lasting precision and reli-ability that users of Imetric scanning systems are familiar with.

There are two reasons why we prefer dental scanning systems of the company Imetric to other devices: their extremely high precision and their easy handling. Especially in combination with the software DentalCAD (exocad), the design step can be completed very quickly and easily.

The entry-level scanners:IScan D104 and D104ao

The IScan D104 and D104ao are structured white light scanners producing 3D model data suited for the computer-aided design of single-tooth restorations, bridges, and all restorations requiring surface data. The IScan D104ao adds software capabilities for implant abutments and multi-implant structures. At any time, the scanning system can be up-graded to the abilities of the advanced IScan D104i (recommended for high-accuracy scan-ning of implant positions).

In March 2012, we entered into the world of digital dentistry by investing in the required CAD components. With regard to the scanner, we opted for the entry level device offered by Imetric 3D, since it gives us exactly what we desired: it generates highly precise data needed for the designing of single tooth restorations and bridges. Furthermore, it can be upgraded on demand. This is exactly what we did in July 2013 – since then, the scanner is also used successfully in order to design telescopes and screw-retained implant abutments.

The ultimate scanner forcomplex tasks: IScan D104i

The IScan D104i is a structured white light scanner producing 3D model data suited for the highest demands. It is designed for exact determination of implant positions, so that the resulting 3D data is used as a basis for the computer-aided design of complex implant-based structures such as screw-retained bridges and bars.

In early 2007, we decided to invest in a high-end scanner of the company Imetric 3D, since it was the first scanning system with open interfaces that delivered reliable measurement data not manipulated in any kind. Today, the high accuracy and reli-ability of Imetric scanners are the reason why we recommend them to colleagues.

Highest precision for implant-based restorations

Since a passive fit is specifically important for implant-based restorations, Imetric has de-veloped special implant positioning methods. They are used in combination with metallic scan adapters which are the result of a de-velopment project carried out with a partner company. The scan adapters are high-precision pieces with very tight tolerances of less than 5 μm, resulting in an exact transfer of the implant positions.

In order to ensure that the accuracy of the IScan D104i for multi-implant restorations is similar to that of coordinate measure-ment machines, special testing methods are employed. For most accurate data transfer, implant positions are supplied as XML file. Proprietary calibration techniques, supervision of the calibration status, and temperature con-trol during scanning assure that data sets of implant models are obtained with previously unmatched data quality and accuracy.

During the last several years, we have tested different dental scanners to produce data that serves as a basis for manufacturing of implant bars – with inconsistent results. In August 2013, we integrated the IScan D104i in our laboratory and finally achieve the consistently high accuracy needed for complex implant-based structures. This saves us a lot of extra work because rescans and remakes are a thing of the past!

Different options allowmaximum flexibility

The scanners are equipped with the scanning software IScan3D as a stand-alone package or integrated with one CAD software version, ad-ditional solutions are optionally obtainable.

Full integration is available for DentCAD (Delcam), exocad DentalCAD (exocad) and IsusSoft (E.S. Healthcare / Dentsply). Special data exchange is available for the partial framework software Digistell (c4w). Data from Imetric scanners is used by several implant planning softwares solutions to produce drill guides.

Other dental CAD software versions with open interfaces are compatible with Imetric scan-ners, but a precise adjustment of the compo-nents to each other for optimized workflow is not offered.

To be able to deliver the highest quality to our customers, we need a scanning device with high ac-curacy and reliability. Imetric scanning systems deliver both requirements above expectations. All scanners offered by Imetric 3D have open interfaces, which is highly important since it gives us the flexibility we need in the rapidly changing world of dental CAD/CAM. At the same time, we benefit from scanner integration with selected software solutions that ensures validated, safe workflows.
