Question 1: Students’ feedback on NEON

Almost all the faculty members of Computer Sciences Department are satisfied on their evaluation by the students on NEON for respective courses taught in Fall Semester 2016. Some of the faculty members had problems with the internet speed and they showed their concern on including questions related to lab equipment and other facilities in their feedback, whereas, some faculty members did not get the feedback. Feedback related to this question is given below in respective columns:

Qurat-ul-Ain Computer Organization and Assembly Language EE 213

The course Computer Organization and Assembly Language EE 213 is well defined to understand the basic concepts of computer organization. All concepts are practically implemented using assembly language. By applying knowledge into practice they get a good understanding of the lower level details of a computer system at the hardware level. The project also plays an important role to test all the concepts studied in the class.

The course is offered in third semester, and is a pre-requisite for Computer Architecture course. This course provides an overview of the architecture and organization of a computer, such as the CPU, memory, I/O organization, peripherals and so on. From this course, students learns the basics of computer architecture and low level programming, i.e. assembly code and hardware manipulation. It focuses on the basic concepts of computer architecture and machine instructions; memory access and storage; instruction execution; assembly language; computer organization; data representation and transfer; digital arithmetic; memory storage and addressing methods; procedures and interrupts; conditional processing, and so on. The course is taught at an appropriate level, after this students will be able to learn the details on computer architecture and other core concepts.

Student’s feedback indicates one relatively weak point:(1) Extra classes. The instructor was officially sent to attend Prof. Asad Abidi workshop at LUMS during first week of the semester. So extra classes were arranged by the department to compensate the first week’s classes. Students did not like that. Following measures may be taken for the improvements:(1) The effort should be made to avoid extra classes in future.

The HEC curriculum (Feb 2012), recommends Introduction To Computing to be a 1 CH course, that has been found too little for any useful objectives to be achieved. The course has been converted to a 2 CH course. The course contents as suggested by HEC puts very little emphasis of teaching any language syntax in this course. Given the level of expertise expected in the industry in a programming language, we have introduced the basics of C++ language as part of this course. So basic I/O, data types, one dimensional arrays, strings, basic algorithms like bubble sort and binary search are introduced besides teaching flowcharts and basics about computers.

The HEC curriculum (Feb 2012), recommends Introduction To Computing to be a 2 CH course, that has been found too little for any useful objectives to be achieved in a second course in Programming. The course has been converted to a 3 CH course. The course contents as suggested by HEC is too spread out. It includes abstract data types, exceptions and assertions, collections, GUI and Event-Driven programming, all concepts which are too advanced to be taught in a second course in programming, especially after a basic course (1 or 2 CH). Despite introducing basic C++ in ITC in the first course, there is a lot to be taught to make a student able to write a serious program in C++.Our course outline is far realistic, logical and achievable in a 3 CH course.A student who understands structures and linked lists and can implement them with as well as without using OOP remains the core objective of the course.

Ayesha Bano Fundamentals of Management

MG 223 The outline followed was fully compliant with the HEC approved guidelines, and is appropriate to achieve the desired course objectives. This semester, I used four books which included one essential reading (Samson and Daft) and three recommended readings (Robbins, Hitt and Griffin) to prepare my lectures. I believe that greatly enhanced my own understanding of concepts as well as the students. The reasons behind this is that sometimes the students do not understand the language used by a certain author when explaining a concept. However, when they consult other books which explain the same concept in simple terminology along with examples, their understanding is strengthened and ultimately the learning objectives of the course are effectively fulfilled.

MG 223 Quizzes, class assignments, marked case discussions and marked class participation should continue. I am especially in favor of question answer sessions at the end of lectures to assess how attentive the students were during the lecture. All such participation should be objectively and individually marked. Sessionals and Final exams should continue to hold a high weightage and should be a combination of objective and subjective questions. I kept the weightages 30% for the Sessionals and 50% for the Finals. That way students take these assessments seriously and ensure not to leave topics on choice during exam preparation. Another assessment that could be included is to take students on an industry trip and then ask them to prepare a report in which they link the theories studied in class to what they actually observed in reality (as one of the LOs is to enable the students to critically evaluate the applicability of theories in the real world). I fulfilled this LO through a semester project in which I asked students to choose a small or medium enterprise, and prepare a report presenting its strategic analysis.
