Introduction
ISAPA 2007 - Program 1
Welcome to Brazil
The Department of Physical Education at UNESP-Rio Claro would like to thank you for the opportunity to organize the 16th
International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity (ISAPA).
First of all, we welcome you to Brazil, one of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating countries. We’re the largest
country in Latin America, and the fifth largest in the world. Our population is also big: 170 million people, the sixth largest in
the world. Almost all Brazilians speak Portuguese. We are famous for our Carnaval, and, of course, soccer. We have rainforests,
deserts, mountain ranges, and several thousand miles of Atlantic coastline. Our natural resources are unsurpassed by almost
any other place on earth.
Despite its paradoxes, Brazil is a modern and advanced country. We still struggle with hunger and illiteracy, but we also are
considered the “silo of the world,” have one of the fastest growing Internet systems, as well as a rapidly growing middle-
class. We have a history of pacific relations with all nations, and we are a gateway to other South American countries, setting
trends and sharing and exchanging our popular and academic
cultures. Our interracial blend creates a mystic, diverse, and
complex population with no clear boundaries, but with a
mosaic of ethnic cultures.
We are a land of friendly people with diverse cultures
and stark contrasts. Here you’ll find skyscrapers and mud
huts, heart surgeons and faith healers, and forest people
and Gap-dressed technophiles. You’ll also find a group of
dedicated pioneer researchers and professionals in the field
of physical education, with many affiliations in related areas.
Here at UNESP in Rio Claro, we have outstanding
scholars, unique pedagogical methods, and many occasions
to apply creative solutions to many social and individual
conditions (e.g., poverty, violence, disability conditions, risk
to development, health impairment, etc.). There is much work
to be done, and many ideas and projects to implement.
An international symposium presents an opportunity for

scholars from our institution and from many parts of the
world to give visibility to international issues and cultural
diversity. Our unique environment provides the perfect
opportunity for putting into practice and action worldviews
about diversity. We’re eager to share our knowledge and
hospitality with you.

The Department of Physical Education
The Department of Physical Education, created in 1984,
is part of the Institute of Biosciences and currently has 30
faculty members with full-time dedication to teaching,
research, administration and community services. Currently,
over 300 students attend two concentration areas, bachelor
and licensure degrees in physical education. In 2004 was
considered one of the four best undergraduate courses in
Brazil
Faculty members have affiliations with researchers at
other Brazilian institutions as well as with well-known
researchers from other countries. The direct outcomes of
these relationships are collaborative studies, training for
undergraduate and graduate students, scholarships from
national grant organizations, and placement of former
students into other world-renowned centers of research and
Ph.D. programs.
One such program is the graduate program (master’s and
doctoral) in Human Movement Sciences. UNESP is one of
the top schools in the nation and its physical education
undergraduate program is considered one of the four best
programs in Brazil. The graduate program is one of Brazil’s
finest, earning high recommendation scores from the federal
educational and research.

Departmental projects
Besides individual research projects, faculty of the
Department of Physical Education are involved in several
other projects that include organization of scientific events,
editing journals and newsletter, outreach programs,
consulting with private and governmental and non-
governmental organizations.
Outreach programs of the department
Each year over 4,000 people from the university and local
community visit the Department of Physical Education,
UNESP at Rio Claro to participate of many outreach programs.
In the last years more than 25 different outreach programs
are annually offered. The purposes vary among community
support service, teaching training, rehabilitation settings,
applied research settings, artistic performance, development
of teaching techniques, etc. Some are as old as the depar-
tment itself.
The list includes:
· Sports for individuals of different ages (soccer, volleyball,
basketball, track and field, capoeira martial art, judo, artistic
gymnastics, trampoline, modern dance, folk dance, ballroom
dance, and more).
· Adapted physical activities (check out some of the
various programs at http://www.rc.unesp.br/ib/e_fisica/
proefa/proefaing.htm) (Portuguese and English)
· Outdoor activities and leisure
· Stress management techniques, relaxation classes
· Physical activity for older individuals
· Exercise and metabolism management
· Fitness programs
Master’s and PhD programs
The graduate program in Human Movement Sciences
master’s level was accredited in 1991. In 2000 the Ph.D. level
was created and accredited. Since 1991, over 104 master
theses were approved and the program currently has near
78 full-time master’s students and 18 Ph.D. students. Many
students receive scholarships funded by our state and
federal grant agencies. The two concentration areas are
“Pedagogy of Human Movement Sciences” (master’s level
only) and “Bio-dynamics of Human Movement Sciences”
(master’s and Ph.D. levels).

About the city of Rio Claro
Rio Claro is a small city (168,218 people) located in the
state of São Paulo, about 180 km northwest of the city of
São Paulo. The nearest international airport is in Campinas,
about an hour-and-a-half away by car. São Paulo’s
international airport (GRU) is about a two-and-a-half hour
drive. Exotic beach and coastal locations are about four
hours away by car or bus, and a number of interesting locales
can be easily reached by car. Founded in June of 1827, Rio
Claro has the facilities and conveniences of a typical small
town. Located between two larger cities, Piracicaba
(population 1 million) and Campinas (population two million),
Rio Claro hosts numerous hotels and restaurants. A variety
of cultural and social events, as well as friendly shopkeepers,
make visitors feel welcome. The city regularly supports

ISAPA’s Invited Guests
ISAPA 2007 - Program
ISAPA’s Invited Speakers
Claudine Sherrill
Dr Claudine Sherrill, President of the International Federation
of Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA) since 2003, and IFAPA
Board Member since 1989, finishes her 4-year term as
President on the last day of this Symposium in Rio Claro, so
the Brazil IFAPA is a very special time for her. Her
participation in a conference here 2 years ago, the fantastic
trip to beautiful Paraty afterward, and working with the Brazil
organizers on this Symposium has made Brazil a rich and
wonderful experience to be remembered forever.
Dr Sherrill, age 73 (and proud of it), is Professor-Emeritus
of Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in Denton, a city of
about 100,000 near Dallas in northern Texas; Editor Emeritus
of Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly, the official research
journal of IFAPA, and remains active on its Editorial Board;
Issues Editor for an APA journal named Palaestra, after the
ancient Greek forum where athletes dialogued; and an officer
of many organizations. Claudine has been a member of the
American Association for Health, Physical Education,
Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) since her undergraduate
years at Texas Woman’s University; a member of the Council
for Special Education (CEC) since the 1970s, and active in
several disability sport associations. One of her strongest
beliefs is that educators should support the organizations
that promote their specializations and professional goals.
Claudine’s newest interest is the aging, especially the
frail elderly in assisted living facilities, because her mother
(age 93, still walking, still striving for a personal best) is one
of these precious persons. Claudine volunteers 3 afternoons
a week to engage her mother and others in fun-oriented APA
and plans to write a book for caregivers. She is particularly
concerned about the discrimination of society toward the
aging and other powerless, and general poor people. Much
of her research has focused on prejudice, social injustice,
inclusion, and changing attitudes and behaviors through
sport, dance, and aquatics.
Claudine has always loved teaching, especially the
students who offer challenges. This, added to severe asthma
as a child, are perhaps what attracted her to APA. In
undergraduate days, Claudine’s favorite activities were
playing field hockey, leading a Girl Scout troop that loved
overnight camping, and teaching swimming to children with
disabilities. Her initial fulltime employment was at the
University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras for 2 years, during
which she learned a lot about cultural and linguistic diversity,
spent her weekends life-guarding for the year-round Girl
Scout camp, and developed a lifetime love for Spanish people
and their diverse cultures. Claudine then spent 3 years at
Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City,
earning both master’s and doctoral degrees while teaching
physical education fulltime in the public schools. Next was
2 years (1959-1961) of teaching at San Francisco State
University. This was the beginning of the hippie era and
offered a lot of adventure.
In 1961 began her lifetime commitment to Texas Woman’s
University (now coeducational, but women remain the
majority), when she joined the faculty and taught
biomechanics, APE methods, elementary school PE teaching
methods, and later (for 30 years or so) all of the methods of
research in the Department. Claudine is most proud of
starting the APE specialization at Texas Woman’s University
in 1972, of TWU students, and of her 700-page textbook first
published in 1976. Entitled Adapted Physical Activity,
Recreation, and Sport: Crossdisciplinary and Lifespan, the
7th edition will soon be published. Claudine doesn’t believe
in retirement. She still has hundreds of goals and a passion
for life, diversity, social justice, and adventure.

Anne Jobling
After studying at the University of Melbourne, Anne Jobling
commenced her career as a physical education teacher in
Victoria, Australia. She assisted in the development of
programs for children with sensory-motor difficulties in and
around primary schools in Melbourne as well as teaching
swimming in the regular itinerant program. In 1965, she
journeyed with her husband, Ian, to Canada and taught for a
few months in Powell River, British Columbia, before going
to Edmonton, Alberta for a further four years. Returning to
Australia (Adelaide), Anne taught children with disabilities
in various swimming and water safety programs while raising
two daughters. After moving to Queensland in 1978 she
became involved in the Down Syndrome Research Program
at the Schonell Special Education Research Centre at the
University of Queensland, and commenced a period of
additional studies that culminated in her being awarded a
PhD in 1996 for her thesis entitled, Motor development of
school-aged children with Down syndrome.
Dr Anne Jobling became the Co-director of the Down
Syndrome Research Program for several years prior to her
retirement, or ‘lifestyle transition’, in 2005. This program of
research commenced in 1977 and has continually collected
data on a cohort of individuals with Down syndrome born in
Brisbane between 1976 and 1978. Dr Jobling’s involvement
with this cohort has been continual since 1978, and numerous
scholars have visited from North America, the United
Kingdom, continental Europe, as well as Oceania. This
research program also has several smaller incomplete cohorts
that have been involved in specific research projects. Over
one hundred and fifty (150) families have been involved in
the work; and a great debt of gratitude for their continual
support is owed to them. Another major research initiative
developed in her later years at the University has been
‘Latch-On’, a literacy and technology program for young
adults. Dr Jobling acted as the inaugural Executive Director
of Latch-On for five years, which was developed into a two-
year literacy program for young adults post-school. After
five years of research and development, Latch-On was
commercialised; it is now administered by the ‘Endeavour
Foundation, a community service provider. Recently, a
literacy module on Healthy Lifestyle has been added and
currently research is being undertaken pertaining to the
health literacy of young adults with intellectual disabilities.
Dr Jobling’s major research interests at the University of
Queensland have been in the field of Down syndrome
covering lifelong aspects of development that relate to motor
development and health, as well as education and self
regulation. Other research interests include inclusive
education, play, leisure and recreation for individuals with
disability, and trans-disciplinary teamwork in special
educational environments. Anne has had extensive and
continual grant support for her work with her colleagues at
the University of Queensland, and other universities. She
has presented at numerous conferences nationally and
overseas and has over 25 publications in significant peer
reviewed journals and 9 book chapters. Anne has also co-
authored a book with a colleague from Vancouver, Canada
on motor development and Down syndrome (Down
syndrome: Move, Grow and Play) that drew on her
considerable experience in the field of physical education.
Dr Jobling is frequently consulted by numerous parent
groups in Australia as well as overseas, and is currently a
consultant and research associate with the Down Syndrome
Research Foundation, Canada.
In recognition of her contribution to sport and recreation
for people with intellectual disabilities Anne was made a life
member of Australian Sport and Recreation Association for
People with an Intellectual Disability (AUSRAPID), having
been a board member for over 10 years, and President and
board member of its Queensland branch (QRAPID) She has
also acted as a consultant to the National Programs for People
with Disabilities at the Australian Sports Commission
contributing to both Willing and Able (school program) and
Aussie Able (coaching program).
In 2000 she was awarded an Australian Sport Medal by
the Australian government for her contribution to sport for
people with intellectual disability.
Of special significance for this conference gathering, Dr
Jobling is a board member of the International Federation of
Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA) with responsibility for
the Oceania region.
Since retiring in 2005, Dr Anne Jobling continues to work
as an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Education
at the University of Queensland. The research interests and
those of her colleagues continue to focus on improving life
styles of individuals with intellectual disability, particularly
those with Down syndrome: these include mental health,
the development of lifelong learning- particularly literacy
for a healthy lifestyle at present, as well as self-regulation
and family and sibling issues. Anne is currently co-
investigator on two 3 -year Australian Research Council
grants; she is also involved in numerous other funded smaller
projects.
With her husband, Dr Ian Jobling, she also enjoys travel
to Canada to visit her elder daughter’s family, especially her
two Canadian grandchildren, as well as walking and
swimming in her home-town of Noosa Heads, Queensland
with her other daughter who lives close by on the Sunshine
Coast.

Yeshayahu (Shayke) Hutzler
Yeshayahu Hutzler, or better known by his nickname,
Shayke, was born in Tel-Aviv, Israel, to German-speaking
parents. In 1986 he completed his Ph.D. research on
movement actions of wheelchair users at the Faculty of
Social and Behavioral Sciences of the Heidelberg University,
Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Herman Rieder. In
his dissertation, which was the basis for several publications,
Shayke established his belief in empowerment and the
ecological context as central constructs of adapted physical
activity (APA). From his very early scientific and practical
activities in APA, he dedicated himself to the reciprocal
relationships of the participant and the scientist/practitioner,
and many of his studies developed from this practice-
oriented perspective. Since 1987, he has been a staff member
(tenured in 1989) of the Zinman College for Physical
Education and Sport Sciences at the Wingate Institute,
Israel, teaching courses on motor development, motor
learning, and APA. Since the early 1990’s, Shayke has co-
supervised several Master’s and Ph.D. students, and most
of them have subsequently acquired major professional
positions. In 1990, he established the Center of Sports for
the Disabled at the college, which has developed into a
successful therapeutic center, providing adapted aquatics,
fitness and exercise services to children and adults in the
region.
In 1999, Shayke began teaching at the Graduate Program
of the Zinman College, and at the same time became director
of rehabilitation services at the Israeli Sport Center for the
Disabled (ISCD; www.iscd.com ), providing services to over
a thousand individuals on an annual basis. In this capacity
he is in charge of a staff of nearly 50 practitioners, providing
a variety of APA services, many of whom are graduates of
the Zinman College. Shayke has authored or coauthored four
books in Hebrew, and more than 60 articles in refereed
international and national journals. He was among the
founders, and served as the first chairperson, of the Israeli
Organization of Sport Therapy, which was later renamed the
Israeli Association of Adapted Physical Activity. On the
international scene, Shayke has been an active member of
the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity
(IFAPA) since the early 1990s, and since 1999 he has held
the position of Secretary of the Executive Board. In 2004 he
restructured the IFAPA website (www.ifapa.biz ), which
became an important vehicle for increasing IFAPA’s visibility
and communication. In 2005 he was elected President-Elect
of IFAPA, and will assume the presidency at the end of the
16th ISAPA congress, to be held in Rio Claro, Brazil, in July
2007.
While assuming an academic career, Shayke continued
to qualify in practical APA experiences and techniques,
including obtaining an international degree in aquatic
therapy in Valens, Switzerland, and practicing aquatic and
land-based exercise with service recipients of the ISCD. One
of his recent practical innovations is the development of the
Systematic Ecological Modification Approach (SEMA),
which is an extension of the Ecological Task Analysis model.
The SEMA is a universal strategy for adapting activities,
practices and services, and appears in several 2007
publications. Further practical interests include the
development of modern assessment and intervention
programs, and the realization of inclusive projects, one of
which is an innovative reverse integration program in
wheelchair basketball. During the past decade he has
17

succeeded in obtaining multiple grants from the Israeli
National Insurance Institute, which have enabled the
development of new services, including the establishment
of a study center and the provision of extensive personal
and internet-based support for APA recipients and
professionals (www.adaptip.com ).
In his leisure time, Shayke enjoys cultural events and
participating in sports, mainly swimming, biking, scuba-
diving, roller-skating, and, for the last few years, sky-diving.
The practice of these activities has strengthened his belief
in the fundamental wisdom of clichés such as “no mountain
high enough,” “the sky’s the limit,” and “ability, not disability,
counts.”

Regina Favre
Regina Favre is a philosopher, therapist, independent
researcher, and founder of the Laboratory for Formative
Process in São Paulo.
Since 1975, Regina has been a researcher, educator and
therapist. She offers interventions and develops research
activities based on the neo-Reichian approach, and she is
deeply involved with analytical and psychoanalytical
conceptions.
Influenced by meetings with Felix Guattari in 1980, Regina
digressed and gradually turned away from this line of
thought, and began to criticize the Freudian basis that guided
Wilhelm Reich’s conceptions.
In 1986, Regina began to adopt Stanley Keleman’s
approach, Formative Thinking , which encompassed
Guattari’s Nomad Thinking. This connection allowed her to
understand what she refers to as the clinical continuous
formative process of subjective bodies and their world. At
that time she dedicated herself to the study and translation
of Keleman’s work, and she maintained an intense
correspondence with him. In 1992, she began to regularly
attend seminars at the Center for Energetic Studies in
Berkley, California. Regina has maintained this professional
relationship for 15 years, assimilating the Formative Thinking
approach and its methodology.
In 2006, this same approach—as well as the political
motivation that originally lead her to find in the Darwinian
dimension of Formative Thinking an instrument for
understanding reality as a continuous production—lead her
to turn away from its apolitical dimension. She began to
work independently in association with her colleague
researchers, collaborators, and the followers of her ways of
thinking and operating. She then created the Laboratory for
Formative Process, where she cultivated a line of thought
and a practice in formative process, which addressed feeling
the need to belong in a process of physical and subjective
biodiversity. Her political way of thinking agrees with the
process of evolution, as well as with the understanding that
the subjective molding of biological bodies is due to a violent
interplay of social forces. She has written articles in which
she discusses the practice and theories of the body as we
know it today; she deepens associations with neurosciences,
biology, and the critics of politics of subjectivity brought
by global capitalism. During her seminars about Emotional
Anatomy, Regina produces videos that show how, with her
students, she researches the formative process in reading
acts, conversations, living in groups, and experimentations.
She uses a context especially created for the purpose of
learning the formative process in both internal and external
environments.

Herman Van Coppenolle
Since 1971, Dr. Herman Van Coppenolle has been a professor
at the Faculty of Physical Education and Physiotherapy,
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Here, he has been
active in three different domains.
First, as a former Belgian record-holder in the 200-meter
sprint (21.3 seconds), Prof. Van Coppenolle was a professor
in track and field and coaching. He later became a coach for
famous athletes such as Fons Brydenbach, who was a world
record-holder for the 400-meter indoor, as well as placing
fourth in the finals at the Olympic Games in Montreal.
Herman also developed a new form of psychotherapy
through movement activities for psychiatric patients, called
psychomotor therapy. As its founding father in Belgium,
Herman trained more than 600 students who specialized in
this field after obtaining a Master’s diploma in physical
education, sport science, or physiotherapy. His research and
internationally-awarded movies (about psychomotor therapy
for depressive and anorexia nervosa patients) expanded the
approach to international dimensions. A major contribution
was his creation of a psychomotor observation method, “The
Leuven Observation Scales for Objectives in Psychomotor
Therapy,” which was translated into many languages.
His international impact became even more important
when he was elected president of the European Association
for Research into Adapted Physical Activity (1993 to 2003),
and when he was coordinator for the European Master’s in
Adapted Physical Activity (1991 to 2006). He made another
major contribution to the field when he helped upgrade this
European Master’s program to a world Master’s program
(effective from 2005 to 2010). Together with his colleagues
at the Universities of Limerick, Olomouc, and Oslo, Prof.
Van Coppenolle helped make it possible for the best students
from all over the world to participate in the Erasmus Mundus
Master’s Programme in Adapted Physical Activity—offered
jointly by the Universities of Leuven, Limerick, Olomouc,
and Oslo—through a very important grant from the European
Commission.
At the same time, he continued to obtain financial support
from the European Commission for European projects
concerning the development and promotion of the education
of students in adapted physical activity with regard to the
integration of persons with disabilities at school and in
society. This occurred through the European Thematic
Networks (THENAPA I and THENAPA II), in which all
countries were involved.
THENAPA I (1999-2004 ) produced teaching materials
such as the CD-ROM, “ADAPT,” which was translated
into 15 languages: English, French, German, Dutch, Danish,
Greek, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Latvian,
Lithuanian Hungarian, Polish, and Slovak. Thus, it has
become a basic document in adapted physical activity,
disseminated worldwide. THENAPA II’s (2004-2007)
“Ageing and disability – A new crossing between physical
activity, social inclusion and life-long well-being,” focuses
on the hot topic in all countries, namely, adapted physical
activity for older persons, and a Master’s program in this
specific area is being planned.
Prof. Van Coppenolle was awarded Honorary Doctoral
Degrees by the universities of Warsaw 2003 (Poland) and
Kaunas 2005 (Lithuania), and in April of this year he was
nominated as an Honorary Professor at three famous sport
universities in China: Beijing, Xian, and Shangdon.
The professor’s overall message is that movement and
sport are beneficial to everything important in human life:
physical fitness as well as psychological and social well-
being. This is even truer for persons with a disability and for
older persons.
Prof. Van Coppenolle has, throughout his life, practiced
sports at the top level (track and field), or, later, at a more
recreative level (football, basketball, tennis, skiing, general
fitness, distance running, swimming, cycling, volleyball, and
motor biking). Actually, he continues all of these activities
himself at an older age in part to convince everyone about
how staying active can enhance the quality of life for older
persons.

among elite athletes and normal populations. In his most
recent publications, he has focused on people with
disabilities in Africa. Literature in this area of research,
particularly on African participants, is scarce. Professional
Philosophy: His passion and motivation to explore this
area of research are driven by his philosophies that:
a) “Individuals with disabilities are also humans like the
rest of us, and, therefore, must not be discriminated against.”
b) “By virtue of their disabilities, they deserve more
attention in the planning and implementation of fitness
programs for their health and sporting benefits.”
c) “Providing internationally accessible data on African
participants with disabilities would bring Africa to the lime-

changes throughout the lifespan. Her theoretical frameworks
include ecological and dynamic systems approaches.
From 1995 to 1996, Dr. Mauerberg-deCastro undertook
post-doctoral studies with Bev Ulrich at Indiana University
Bloomington’s School of Health and Physical Education.
From 2001 to 2002, she completed a second post-doctoral
experience with Dr. Esther Thelen at Indiana University
Bloomington’s Department of Psychology. There, she began
to develop a new experimental paradigm in postural control,
which she calls the “anchor paradigm.” Also, influenced by
Dr. Thelen’s seminal work, in 2002 she began to investigate
manual perseveration in children with disabilities using the
canonical Piagetian “A not B task.” Both lines of
investigation have generated several masters’ studies and
one PhD dissertation.
Recently, Dr. Mauerberg-deCastro has begun to explore
another area of action and perception: the perception of body
dimensions, using psychophysical methods.
She has formally advised more than thirty students at
both the graduate and undergraduate levels, including PhD
students, and has published more than twenty research
articles, six book chapters, and more than a hundred papers
presented at scientific meetings nationwide and
internationally.
In 2005, Dr. Mauerberg-deCastro published the first
comprehensive Brazilian textbook in adapted physical
activity, Adapted Physical Activity (Atividade Física
Adaptada, Techmedd, 2005). The first textbook in the area
written by a Brazilian, the book is widely used in the discipline
throughout Brazil and includes chapters on the
psychobiological aspects of disability, the politics and
policies of diversity and inclusion, adapted physical activity
pedagogy, and disability sports, as well as other topics.
She has presented at numerous conferences in Brazil and
in other countries (including the U.S. and Canada). In 2006,
she was invited to participate as a visiting professor in
Norway, in the Erasmus Program in Adapted Physical Activity,
offered through a consortium of European universities.

ISAPA 2007. ISAPA Brazil was conceptualized during the
ISAPA Miami, in1991, by her Brazilian colleagues, who, with
her, founded the Brazilian Society of Adapted Motor Activity
(Sobama) in 1994. (It was at that time that Dr. Claudine Sherrill
planted the seeds of this mission.)
Since 1987, Dr. Mauerberg-deCastro has offered
university outreach programs to the surrounding community
of individuals with disabilities. Her well-known program in
adapted physical activity, PROEFA, has benefited hundreds
of graduate and undergraduate students, collaborators,
participants with disabilities, participants without disabilities
working as tutors, and family members.
Dr. Mauerberg-deCastro’s interests include web
development, graphic design, journal publishing,
photography, and painting (naïve style). Her ongoing goals
are to contribute to the development of students, teachers,
researchers, professors, thinkers, critics, and friends; to learn
from them; and to enjoy the process. She believes that the
true legacy of a scholar is more than publishing articles and
books. It is being a mentor: one who influences lives, who is
politically active, and who advocates against discrimination
and oppression. She believes that inspiring her students—
through example—to be educators, mentors of the next
generation, is her true mission.

G. Lawrence Rarick Award
G. Lawrence Rarick
Most would agree that G. Lawrence Rarick was the most
prominent APA researcher ever.
His early education in the sciences underpinned a
continuing belief in maturation theory to explain age, gender,
and disability characteristics of motor performance of
children across the age range of school years.
Professor Rarick completed a series of research studies, so
large and ambitious as to scare most of us, their scale and
complexity was most impressive. Those studies have
provided the field with classic baseline data across
performance levels, gender, and ability structures. With
participants who had Down syndrome, or learning
disabilities, or mild or moderate intellectual disability, his
work shed light on typical and atypical performance
expectations and had significant programmatic implications.
The information gained has helped shape US Federal and
State Laws and Regulations, as well as our thinking and
practice. APA lost an outstanding scholar with his passing
in 1995.

individuals with disabilities; specifically individuals with
traumatic brain injuries. He has 13 publications in refereed
journals, one additional article in press, and two manuscripts
currently under review. He has also given 7 international
and 12 national presentations. These achievements are truly
remarkable for an individual finishing only his second year
as an assistant professor.
In conjunction with his ambitious research agenda, Dr.
Driver has been very active in both working with individuals
with a disability and developing his college teaching skills.
He has created and implemented a service learning program
at the University of North Texas. On campus this program
provides students the opportunity to work with local
students with disabilities twice a week. He has also created
an off grounds program where he supervises his students
working with students with disabilities at 20 locations around
the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. He also donates his time
with Special Olympics.
In summary, Simon is an outstanding teacher and
emerging scholar. His research is theoretically based and
applied so that the results have an immediate impact upon
improving the quality of life of individuals with traumatic
brain injuries. Simon epitomizes all the qualities of an IFAPA

ISAPA 2007 - Program Booklet
Day Tour Programs
During ISAPA 2007
July 25 - Morning
Areia que Canta: Spring waters in the middle of
a native forest form a natural swimming pool 10
meters in diameter. Water bubbles up from a fine,
white, sandy bottom. Rubbing the sand makes a
sound similar to a Brazilian percussion
instrument called a cuíca. Located 15 km from
Rio Claro. Duration of on-site visit: 2 hours.
Lunch: Areia que Canta farm. Farm meal served
self-service, buffet style.
Activity (R$20,00) + Lunch (R$18,00)
Total: R$38,00
July 25 - Afternoon
Furna do Jacare’s Trail: Shady 3.8 km nature trail in one of
the most protected areas in this region. The trail passes by
three waterfalls. The tour guide provides information about
the ecosystem. This area housed the first state hydro-electric
company, funded in 1944. Today it is a museum.
Lunch: Restaurant of Paineiras. Home-made food served self-
service, buffet style.
Activity (R$35,00 with obligatory insurance included) +
Lunch (R$20,00)
Total: R$55,00
July 26 - Morning
Verticalia: The Alaya® launched the first tree canopy trip in
Brazil. Participants move on suspended “paths” along the
trees, passing across ladders, cables, suspended bridges,
and tirolesas. Thirty-eight obstacles are suspended 12
meters above the ground. This is the only vertical activity in
Brazil where a large number of participants can travel the
paths simultaneously.
Lunch: Appaloosa Restaurant. Food is served self-service,
buffet style.
Activity (R$52,00 with obligatory insurance included) +
Lunch (R$13,50)
Total: R$65,50
July 26 - Afternoon
Rafting down the river in rafts: During the
descent, participants can observe the local
forest and hydro resources. The descent
lasts about two-and-a-half hours and
covers a 9 km river path. A stop is made in
the middle of the trip for participation in
one of two tirolesas over the many
waterfalls of the Jacaré river!

Traveling After the Conference
Several people are interested in travel in Brazil after the
conference. If you are one of those people, please see the
following details and contact João Letizio at
[email protected]. Here is our favorite place: Paraty.
Hotel Coxixo (http://www.hotelcoxixo.com.br/
ipousada.htm) charges approximately +- US$ 30.00 per night
for a suite that fits up to five people. You may also rent a
double room at +- US$ 50.00 per night. Of course, you are
welcome to stay at any of the hotels and pousadas (http://
www.paraty.com.br/hoteis.asp) in Paraty, including the
luxury hotel, Santa Clara (http://www.santaclara

Food Service
During the ISAPA days 24, 25, 26 and 27 of July, you will be
able to have convenient restaurants for lunch near or at the
UNESP campus. The ISAPA and UNESP have the following
places open for lunch and snacks:
ISAPA Restaurant - ASFAFI
It is the UNESP social club next to the UNESP campus (see
the diagram on page 6 of this Program Booklet). At ASFAFI
we hired a convenient catering that will serve Brazilian typical
food called Churrasco. The menu includes six different types
of meat, potato salad, several kinds of green salad, green
bean salad, tomato salad, two kinds of rice dishes, beans,
farofa, vinnaigratte, and bred. The food is served in a buffet
style. Eat all you can.
Cost: 17 reais
Drinks are not included
You can purchase beer, soft drinks, and water.
University Restaurant
This restaurant is inside the campus and includes typical
tray food served for low price. Typically the menu includes:
rice and beans, one kind of vegetable, salad, bred and one
kind of meat. This is served on fixed portions.
Cost: under 8 reais (rate varies for students, faculty and
visitors)
Coffe Shop
It is located inside the campus, next to the University
Restaurant.
Dinner is on your own, with choices of downtown
restaurants.
Those with choices of going downtown for lunch, here is a
