    2.1.1 All the abov e types of faceshields ma y be with or without chincovers.

    2.2 Classes Fac eshields of Type 3 shal l be of ei the r of th e two classesmentioned below :

    Class 1 Faceshields for attachment to a full brim helmetGlass 2 Faceshields for attachment to brimless helmet

    3 . R E Q U I R E M E N T S

    3.1 Genera l Requi rements

    3.1.1 Design T h e faceshields covered by this specification shal l bedesi gned to pr ov id e pro tec ti on to th e face ( th at is, th e front of th e he adincludi ng foreh ead, eyes, cheeks, nose, mo ut h, and chin ) an d neck, wh enre qui red , from flying particles and sprays or splashes of haz ar do us liquids,mo lt en me ta l an d slag. Typ e 1 and Ty pe 2 faceshields shall be desi gnedfor comfort an d a re to be wo rn d irectly on th e the user's he ad . T ype 3

    shall be designed as an attachment for safety helmets.3.1.2 Materials Mate ri al s used in th e ma nuf ac tu re of faceshields

    shall combi ne mec han ica l stren gth a nd lightness of weig ht an d shall benon- ir ri ta ti ng to th e skin. Me ta l par ts shall be corrosi on resistant. Plastics parts shall be of slow-burning type.

    3 .2 Spec i f i c Requi rements

    3.2.1 Type 1 T h e faceshields shall consist essentially of a hea dg ea r,incl uding an adjustable he ad ba nd and crown ba nd ; a dur abl e tilting visorsuppo rt wit hout cro wn pro tect or; colourless tr ans par ent visor a nd arem ova ble an d repl acea ble sw eat ban d. T h e faceshield shall be similar toFig. 1 and shall comply with the test requirements specified in 4.

    3.2.1.1 Headgear T h e faceshield he ad ge ar shall be fabricated ofgood grade vulcanized fibre, acetate butyrate or equal material of at least1.4 mm thickness. He ad ge ar shall consist of a crown ba nd of at least 25 mmwi dth , an adjustable he ad ba nd an d swe atba nd. T h e adjusting devicesshall be ma d e of non- spark ing ma ter ial an d shall hav e no sha rp edges.The design shall be such as to hold the visor and visor support comfortablyan d firm ly in place on th e wea rer 's head , a nd shall pro vid e for tiltingt he visor away from th e face. Adjustab le ba nd s for th e faceshield he ad ge arshall be of th e positive locking typ e of ad equ at e ran ge. It shall form an ar c over th e he ad to assist in positioning and holding the headgear in place. All mechanisms andmovements shall be protected so that the wearer's hair cannot catch inth e adjus ting devices. Not less th an the forehe ad por tion of the hea db an dshall be pro vid ed with a remova ble and replace able cushioned swea tban dthat shall be non-irritating and non-toxic.

    3.2.1.2 Visor support The faceshield visor support shall be furnishedwith out a crow n protect or. Visor supp orts shall be ma d e of vulc aniz edfibre, acetate butyrate or equal material at least 1.4 mm thick and designedfor easy rem ov al or re pl ac em en t of visor. Visor supports shall be pro vid edwit h sna p fastener studs or a com bin ati on of sn ap fastener studs wit hothe r suitable ho ld er studs for att ach ing th e visor in a secure ma nn er .Stu ds shall be equ idis tan tly spaced to pr ovi de for ma xi mu m int erc han ge-abi lity.     3.2.1.3 Visor Unless oth erw ise specified, eac h faceshield shall befurnished with a colourless, transparent plastics visor conforming to thedime ns ions given be low for the visor size specified. Plastics visors shall besimilar to tha t sho wn in Fig. 2 a nd shall com ply with th e test req uir ements given in 4. T h e facesh ields of Type 1 sha ll be furn ished wi th visorof size A.

    3.2.1.4 Sweatbands Sweatbands shall be of non-toxic, non-irritating,cushioning mat eri al an d shall be of remo vabl e a nd repla ceabl e type .Sw ea tb an ds shall cover not less tha n th e foreh ead por tion of the he ad ba nd .

    3.2.2 Type 2 T h e faceshield s sha ll consist e ssentia lly of a he ad ge ar ,visor support with crown protector, visor and a removable and replaceablesw ea tb an d. T h e faceshields shall be similar to Fig. 3, an d shal l conformto the test re qu ir em en ts given in 4.

    3.2.2.1 Headgear T h e faceshield he ad ge ar shall be of th e adjustable positive-locking type and shall be similar to the requirements forType 1 headgear ( 3.2.1.1 ).

    3.2.2.2 Visor support The faceshield visor supports shall be furnished wi th a crown prote cto r at least 70 mm wide from the to p o f the visor

    support at its maximum width. Crown protector shall be made ofvul cani zed fibre, acet ate but yra te or equa l mate rial , at least 1.4 mm thickan d shall be an in teg ral pa rt of th e visor support. Visor suppor t shall be

    provided with snap fas tener studs or a combination of snap fas tener studswith other suitable holder studs for attaching the visor in a secure manner.Studs shall be equidistantly spaced to provide for maximum interchange-ability. Ten si on joints an d tilting mec han is m shall conform to the a pplicable requirements for Type 1 visor supports ( 3.2.1.2 ).

    3.2.2.3 Visor Unle ss otherwise specified eac h facesh ield shal l befurnished wit h colourless tr ans par en t visor conforming to sizes men tio nedunder 3.2.1.3. Visor shal l be simi lar to Fig. 2 and shal l comply wi th th etest requirements given in 4.

    3.2.2.4 Sweatbands Sw ea tb ands for th e faceshield hea dg ea r shallcomply with the requirements for Type 1 sweatband ( 3.2.1.4 ).

    3.2.3 Type 3 The faceshields shall be of the tilting type designed forquick an d easy at ta ch me nt to, an d re mova l from, safety hel met s. Class 1

    3.2.3.1 Attachment mechanism T h e device or met hod of atta chm entof the Type 3 faceshield assembly to the safety helmet shall provide a firmsure fit to ensu re prot ectio n an d pe rm it easy rep lac eme nt. Me ta l or

    plastics frames shall be provided for holding the assembly to the helmetan d supporting visor. Snap -on atta chm ent s are per mitte d prov ided theassembly is supported by a strap or equal method which will hold thefaceshield securely to helmet and not become accidently detached in use.

    3.2.3.2 Class 1 faceshields Class 1 facesh ields shal l be designed forat ta ch in g to safety he lme ts wit h a full br im similar to Fig. 4. At ta ch me ntme ch an is m shall inclu de friction joi nts for ho ld ing the visor a nd p er mi teasy tilting up wa r d so th a t bo tt om of visor is above the hel met bri m.Te ns io n of th e friction jo int s shall be such th at th e visor ca n be he ld in theup or do wn position wit ho ut slipping. T h e faceshield shall be furnishedwi th ou t a cro wn pro tect or; visor size an d thickness shall be as me nti on edunde r 3.2.1.2. T h e faceshield shall be simil ar to Fig. 4 an d shall comp lywith the test requirements given in 4.

    3.2.3.3 Class 2 faceshields Class 2 faceshields shall be designed forat ta ch in g to safety caps ( br iml es s with viso r ) simila r to Fig . 5. The yshall inclu de a crow n pro tect or at least 70 mm wid e at ma xi mu m wi dt h.Cr own pro tec tor shall be ma de of vulc aniz ed fibre, acetate bu ty ra teor an equ al ma te ria l at least 1.4 mm thick. Unless otherw ise specified ( see 5.2 ), class 2 facesh ieldsshall be similar to Fig. 5 an d shall com ply wi th th e test re qu ir em en tsgiven in 4.

    3 .3 Spec ia l Vi so rs and Ac ces so r ie s When special or additional visorsare required such as fibre visor, coloured plastics, special sizes or thickness,they shal l be as specified a nd sha ll be designed to fit th e visor suppor t andshall be int er ch an ge ab le wi th clear-plastics visor of th e same man ufa ctu re r.When specified ( see 5.2 ), special accessories such as c hin pr otec tors a ndwider crown protectors for Type 2 and Type 3, Class 2 shall be furnished.

    3 .4 In t e r changeab i l i t y All parts hav ing the same manu fact urer 's pa rtnumber shall be directly and completely interchangeable with each other

    with respect to installation and performance.3 .5 Mark ing Ea ch he ad ge ar , plastics visor, or att ac hm en t shall be

    4. TESTS

Any sh ield in the sampl e con tai nin gone or mo re visual or dimen siona l defects shall not be tak en for further

    tests an d if the nu mb er of defective shields in any sample exceeds 2.5 pe rcen t of the s amp le size, thi s sha ll be th e cause for reject ion of th e lotrepresented by the sample.

T h e visor shall not be fractu red no r pier ced thr oug h by th e im pa ctof the projectile.

    4.2.3 Visible Transmittance De te rm in e the tota l visible ( lumi nous )tr ans mi tt anc e of clear or colour ed visors by any s ta nd ar d me th od . Clearvisors shall tr ansm it no t less than 85 per cent of th e incid ent visiblera di at io n. Colo ured visors shall tra nsm it as follows:

    4.2.4 Flammability Inse rt one end of a 13 cm 1.2 cm s trip of th ema te ri al in a blue-f lame Bunsen bu rn er . Inc li ne t he strip at 45 with th e13 cm longi tudi nal axis hori zont al.     b) Subjection to a moi st a tmosphere of formaldehyde for a periodof 10 minutes at room temperature ( 25C ); and

    c) Immersion for 10 minutes in a solution of modified phenolics,hypochlorite, or quaternary ammonium compounds in strengthspecified by the manufacturer at room temperature ( 25C ).

    5. PACKING AND MARKING

    5.1 Faceshields and accessories shall be packed in a manner which shallensure safe delivery at destination.

    5.2 The containers shall be marked with at least the following information:a) Name and type of faceshield,

    b) Special visors for Type 1, Type 2 or Type 3, Class 2 if provided,

    andc) Special visors or accessories, if provided ( see 3.3 ).

    5.2.1 The faceshields may also be marked with the ISI CertificationMark.

Th e ISI Ma rk on products covered by an In di anSt anda rd conveys the a ssu ranc e t hat they hav e been pr oduced to com ply with therequirements of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing andquality control which is devised and supervised by ISI and operated by the producer.ISI marked products are also continuously checked by ISI for conformity to thatst an da rd as a further safeguard. Det ails of conditions under which a licence for theuse of the IS I Certification Ma rk m ay be grant ed to manufactu rer s or processors,may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.

    6. SAMPLING

    6.1 Lot All faceshields of the same type, class, and size presented at onetime shall be considered a lot for the purpose of inspection.

    6.2 Sample Size The number of faceshields to be selected for a lotshall depend on the size of the lot and shall be as given below:
