0.1 This Indian Standard ( Part I I Third Revision was adopted by theIndian Standards Institution on 14 Maized bythe Joint Sectional Committee for Concrete Reinforcement had beenapproved by the Civil Engineering Division Council and the Structuraland Metals Division Council.0.2 This standard was first published in 1953 subsequently revised in1960 and 1966. The present revision has been taken up with a view tomodifying the earlier provisions in light of experience gained in workingto this standard by both manufacturers and users.0.3 Apart from incorporating an amendment issued to this standard, thisstandard adopts 51 units in specifying the various physical requirements.Further, certain provisions of the standard have been revised based on thelatest Indian Standards on physical and chemical tests for steel.0.4 In the formulation of this standard, due weightage has been given tointernational co-ordination among the standards and practices prevailingin different countries in addition to relating it to the practices in the fieldin this country.0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS : 2-1960 . The number of significant places retainedin the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified valuein this standard.

IS : 432 P a r t II 19821. SCOPE1.1 This standard Part II covers th e requirements of hard-drawn steelwire of medium strength for use as reinforcement in concrete.2. TERMINOLOGY2.0 For th e purpose of this standard, th e following definitions shall apply.2.1 Bundle - Two or more coils or a number of l engt hs properl ybound together.2.2 Co i l One continuous piece of wire as drawn in th e form of a coil.2.3 Elongation - The increase in length of a tensile test piece understress. The elongat ion at fracture is conventionally expressed as apercentage of the original g au ge len gth of a standard test piece.2. 4 Parce l Any quantity of finished wire whether in coils or, bundles presented for examination and test at anyone time.2.5 P r o o f St res s The stress which is just sufficient to produce, underload, a non-proportional eiongation eq ual to a specified percentage of th eoriginal gauge length.2.6 UltilUate Tensile St r e s s - The maximum load reached in a tensiletest divided by the original cross-sectional area of t he g au ge l en gt h portionof th e test piece.2.7 W i r e - Cold-drawn steel wire of circular cross section.3.M AN UF AC TU RE A ND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION3.1 The wire shall be cold-drawn from mild steel made by the openhearth, electric d up lex, acid bessemer, basic oxygen, or a combination ofthese processes. In case any other process is employed in th e manufactureof steel, prior approval of the purchaser should be obtained. In case basicoxygen process is employed for manufacture, th e n itro gen con tent of th esteel shall not exceed 8percent.

3.1.1 The ladle analysis when made in accordance with relevant partsof IS : 228* shall show that th e steel contains not more than 5 percentof sul phur and no t more than 5 percent of phosphorus.*Methods for chemical analysis of steels secondrevisi n) beinf,; issued in parts .
