WRESTLING TOURNAMENT
Hilton Central High School
January 12-13, 1996
REPRODUCED BY ARMDRAG.COM COURTESY OF JIM KEMP.
THE CLAYTON BARNARD MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
This wrestling tournament is dedicated to Clayton Barnard, former co-captain of twovarsity wrestling teams at Hilton Central School, 1971-73. Clayton was more than just aco-captain, he was a leader of young men. Clayton cared for each of his teammates, triedto help them improve their skills, and helped mold them to conduct themselves asgentlemen in school and on the mat.
Qayton led the team by his actions. At the end of his freshman year, his first year ofwrestUng, Clay said, "I want to be a New York State Champion." He never forgot thatgoal and showed the team how to do it. His parents cleared out the family room, putmats down, and made it a wrestUng room. He invited the boys on the team over to hishouse to practice and then compete in off-season tournaments. He inspired everyone tocare about their skiUs and the skills of their teammates.
Clayton led the way for Hilton's team from near the bottom to the top by his wrestlingachievements. He was Hilton's first Monroe County Champion in nine years, Hilton s firstSection V Tournament Champion, and he won the John Ordway Trophy for the MostOutstanding Wrestler in that tournament. Clayton was Hilton's first representative in theNew York State tournament, finishing 3rd, to his disappointment.
Most captains' influences fade soon after their last season, but Clayton was different. Hewas still involved with the young men in Hilton's future teams. The summer of Clayton'ssenior year, he won the New York State freestyle tournament. He then attended AshlandCollege. For five years at Christmas time, he returned to help coach his formerteammates. He tried to get these young men to lielieve in themselves, to set goals, andwnrV to arhipva them. Clayton became a College AU-American for three years at AshlandCollege in Division III. Because he wanted to compete at Division I level, he transferredto the University of North Carolina.
Clayton Barnard, age 24, died in July 1978 of Leukemia. We, the people of Hilton, arproud to dedicate this tournament to him.
