I have type 2 diabetes and have just started taking metformin on the info leaflet is say to avoid alcohol which for the most part dosnt bother me but i have the

works xmas party in a few weeks and would like to have a couple of drinks. what is likely to happen regarding the medication

Answer by MamaSmurfYou should refrain from drinking very much at all when you are a diabetic. If your blood sugars are under good control, a drink now and then is usually ok. But you must realize what alcohol does to your blood sugars

when you drink it. First..it will raise the blood sugar levels, and then a few hours after you stop drinking, it can cause an episode of hypoglycemia. (low blood sugar.) Most people associate low blood sugar with drinking, but they don't realize that first the blood sugar goes very high. If you want to drink at

the Christmas party, just have one and nurse it for awhile. Then drink something that does not contain sugar. After all, you don't have to drink to be

social able and have a good time
