Is community policing just another fad or a realistic step toward improving “Police Community Relations?” Community policing is a new type of patrolling that should not be considered jut a trend or fad. This type of policing allows involvement and stresses prevention as opposed to officers jut reporting to crime scenes after the fact. Community policing build relationships and can add trust and a sense of security. Community policing allows police officers and the members of communities to interact and address concerns and issues that make the neighborhood better. I have personally experienced community policing through a program my Homeowner’s Association participates in. My subdivision along with two other’s within a few blocks are assigned a police officer who patrols the neighborhoods during his shift and meets with the community twice monthly in a sort of “round table” setting. We discuss topics such as how to be on watch for suspicious activity, making our homes safer, crime stats, and self-defense. At times we fairs were other public servants come in to speak and build awareness. Community policing is definitely a good step towards resolving challenges related to public trust of police officers.
