Mission Statement

The City of Brenham Recycling Center's mission is to promote and protect the environment for future generations by assisting citizens of Brenham and Washington County along with local businesses an alternate method of waste disposal by reusing, recycling and reducing recyclable materials from the waste stream.

Recyclables Accepted

Cardboard Aluminum Newspaper Mixed Paper Glass (Brown, Green & Clear)

Used Cooking Oil

Tin Cans Plastic (#1 thru #7) Batteries (Auto, Boat, AA, AAA, C, D, etc)

Cell Phones Motor Oil Oil Filters

AluminumTwenty years ago it took 19 cans to make one pound, today is takes 33 cans to make one pound

One aluminum can recycled today will be back on the grocery shelf in about 60 days

Americans use over 80 billion aluminum cans each year

Because so many aluminum cans are recycled, aluminum cans account for less than 1% of the total U.S. waste stream, according to EPA estimates

It takes 500 years to breakdown aluminum in landfills

In 2014 - Brenham Recycling Center recycled 9.23 TONS of aluminum

Paper ProductsMore landfill space is saved by recycled paper than any other material

Paper can not be recycled indefinitely but it can be recycled about 5 times before the fibers weaken

The average person uses 550 pounds of paper each year, if they would recycle it, each person could save about 5 average-sized trees

Recovered paper is used to make a variety of products, including copier paper, paper towels and napkins and corrugated boxes

In 2014 the Brenham Recycling Center recycled 405.58 TONS of paper

PlasticsSorted plastics are chopped, washed and converted into flakes or pellets that are then processed into new productsUsed to produce

Bakery traysCarpetsClothingLaundry product bottlesAgricultural pipesBagsMotor oil bottles

Recycling Plastics reduces air pollutionIn 2014 Brenham Recycling Center

recycled 92.52 TONS of plastics

Glass

Glass can be recycled indefinitely and made into food containersMost of the glass recovered in the U.S. is used in new glass containers. A portion is also used in fiberglass and “glassphalt” for highway construction

In 2014 Brenham Recycling Center recycled 222.32 TONS of glass products

Cardboard

90% of all products shipped in the U.S. are shipped in corrugated cardboard boxesCorrugated cardboard is often made of recycled content and almost always made of post-consumer materialRecycling 1 ton of cardboard saves over 9 cubic yards of landfill space

Brenham Recycling Center recycled 734.02 TONS of cardboard in 2014

Recycling Center Activities

The City of Brenham offers a “Cardboard Recycling Route” to businesses around the Brenham area. This route provides the business with an alternate method of disposal for cardboard. It also saves space in trash receptacles at the business, ultimately saving the business money by decreasing the amount of pickups and size of containers used.

Cardboard Receptacles

Baskets are picked up based onthe amount of material that each business receives. Some are pickedup 3 times per week! (McDonalds,Dollar Stores, etc)

“Municipal Mulch”The City of Brenham has opened the door to yard waste reduction and awareness by purchasing a Diamond Z tub grinder in the summer of 2002.

The City of Brenham Mulching facility is designed to recycle yard waste, wood waste, leaves, and grass clippings into a beneficial product called “Municipal Mulch” which benefits the entire community and its outlying areas.

How is “Municipal Mulch” made?

Municipal Mulch is made by combining yard waste, wood waste, and grass clippings together into large stockpiles. After stockpiling, the Diamond Z tub grinder takes over. First, the yard waste is ground through a set of 5 x 6 in. screens, which produces wood chips. These wood chips are separated and stockpiled into larger piles to allow the mulching process to complete its cycle. After 2-3 months and adding water as needed, the woodchips are then double-ground through a set of 2x2 in. screens. These screens produce quality mulch, which has a finer texture and darker appearance. Once double-ground “Municipal Mulch” is ready for its final destination.

Biosolids in Brenham?

Biosolids are the nutrient-rich organic materials resulting from the treatment of sewage sludge. When treated and processed, sewage sludge becomes biosolids which can be safely recycled and applied as soil enhancement to sustainably improve and maintain productive soils and stimulate plant growth.

In 2005 the City of Brenham received approval from The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to market and distribute biosolids to local farmers and ranchers for land application purposes. This process allows the City of Brenham to recoup some operational costs and diverts the biosolids from landfilling.
