Indian Standard SPECIFICATION FOR
STRAIGHT MINERAL HIGH DEMULSIBILITY OILS
( First Revision )
0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the Rureau of Indian Standards on 10 July 1987, after the draft finalized by the Lubricants and Related Products Sectional Committee had been appro- ved by the Petroleum, Coal and related Products Division Council.
0.2 A number of rolling mills turning out accurate profiles are using oil film bearing on the back up and/or on the main rolls. These bear- ings need a high grade bearing oil possessing excellent water separating properties because of the peculiar feature of water contamination which is so common in these systems. This standard was originally issued in 1972 and the same is being revised to align the standard with the latest JPSS standard with a view to enabling the steel plants to procure the right type of material suited to their needs.
0.3 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, ex- pressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accor- dance with IS : 2-1960”. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
+
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements and methods of sampling and test for high grade straight mineral high demulsibility oils used on oil film bearings employed in steel mills and other similar applications.
2. GRADES
2.1 The material shall be of nine grades depending on its kinematic viscosity
*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( reuiscd ).
3
IS : 6552 - 1987
3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 General - The material shall be bright, clear and free from water, clay, dirt or any suspended impurities.
3.2 Composition - The material shall consist of paraffinic base oils having a high chemical stability. Use of viscosity index (VI) improvers is not permitted.
3.3 The material shall also comply with the requirements given in Table 1, when tested according to the appropriate methods prescribed in IS : 1448”. Reference to methods of test in ‘P’ series given in co1 12 of Table 1.
4. PACKING AND <MARKING
4.1 Packing - The material shall be packed in suitable metal containers as agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier.
4.2 Marking - The containers shall be securely closed and marked with the name of manufacturer, name, grade and mass of the material; recog- nized trade-mark, if any; and identification in code or otherwise to enable the lot of consignment or manufacture to be traced back from records.
4.2.1 The containers may also be marked with the Standard Mark.
NOTE - The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The Standard Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the producer. Standard marked products are also continuously checked by BE for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the Standard Mark mav be granted to manufacturers or porcessors may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
5. SAMPLING
5.1 Representative samples of the material shall be drawn as prescribed in IS : 1447-1966t.
