NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Part 1) (Second Revision) which is identical with ISO 3767-1 :1 gg8 ‘TraCtOrsImachinery for agriculture and forestry, powered lawn and garden equipment — Symbols for operatorcontrols and other display-s — Part 1 : Common symbols’ issued by the International Organizationfor Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of theAgricultural Tractors and Power Tillers Sectional Committee and approval of the Food and AgricultureDivision Council.
This standard was first published in 1971. After the publication of ISO 3767-1:1991 and ISO 3767-2:1991, this standard was also revised by splitting into two parts in line with ISO Standard. Part 1 of thisstandard covers the common symbols; Part 2 covers the symbols for agricultural tractors and machinery.Due to revision of the ISO Standard, it was decided to revise this standard also.
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication a~ an Indian Standard. Certainconventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularlydrawn to the following:
a)
b)
Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear, referring to this standard, they should beread as ‘Indian Standard’.
Comma (, ) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice“isto use a point ( . ) as the decimal marker.
The technical committee responsible for the preparation of this standard has reviewed the provisions ofthe following International Standards and decided that they are acceptable for use in conjunction withthis standard:

PART 1 COMMON SYMBOLS
( Second Revision)
1 Scope
This part of ISO 3767 establishes the Commonsymbols for use on operator controls -and otherdisplays on tractors and machine~ for agriculture andforestry, and powered lawn and garden equipment asdefined in ISO 33390 and ISO 5395.
The symbols given apply to controls and displayscommon to tractors and machinery for agriculture andforestry, and powered lawn and garden equipment, aswell as to other types of self-propelled work machinesdesigned to operate off public roads, such as earth-moving machines, powered industrial trucks andmobile cranes.
NOTE 1 The foreword lists other parts of this InternationalStandard, where svmbols for specific forms of mechine~and equipment mev be found.
2 Normative rderen~
The following standards contain provisions which,through reference in this text, constitute provisions ofthis part of 1S0 3767. At the time of publication,theeditions indicated were valid. All standards are subjectto revision, and parties to agreements based on thispart of ISO 3767 are encouraged to investigate thepossibility of applying the most recent editions of thestandards indicated below. Members -of IEC and ISOmaintain registers of currently vahd InternationalStandards.

3 Dtintion
For the purposes of all parts of thisStandard, the following definition applies.
for use on
International
3.1 svmbk Vsually perceptible figure used totransmit information independently of language. Itmay be produced by drawing, printing or Qther means.
4 General
-4.1 Symbols shall be as shown in succeedingclauses of this part of ISO 3767. However, symbolswhich are shown in outline form in this part ofISO 3767, may be shaded in actual use for clarity ofreproduction and improved visual perception by theoperator, except as otherwise noted for individualsymbols.
4:2 Limitations inherent in some reproduction and
dlsplav technologies may require increas~ linethickness or other minor modifications of symbols.Such modifications are acceptable” provided thesymbol remains unchanged in its basic graphicalelements, and easily discernible by the operator.
1
IS 6283 (Pati 1) :20061S03767-1 :1998
4.3 Additionally, to improve the appearance andperceptibility of a graphical symbol or to coordinatewith the design of the equipment to which it isapplied, it may be necessary to change the line thick-ness or to round off the corners of the symbol. Thegraphical designer is normally free to make suchchanges provided that the essential perceptualcharacteristics of the symbol are maintained. See 10.2in ISO 3461-1:1988.
4.4 For actual use, all symbols shall be reproducedlarge enough to be easily discernible by the operator.See ISO 3461-1 for guidelines for proper sizing ofsymbols. Symbols shall be used in the orientationsshown in this part of ISO 3767 unless otherwisenoted for individual symbols.
4.5 Most symbols are constructed using a building-block approach in which various symbols and symbolelements are combined in a logical manner to producea new symbol. For example, symbol 8.4 for enginelubricating oil filter is a composite of symbol 6.1 forengine, symbol 6.5 for oil, and symbol 6.13 for filter.
4.6 If a symbol shows a machine or parts of amachine from a side view, a machine moving fromright to left across the symbol grid area shall beassumed. If a -symbol shows a machine or parts of amachine from an overhead view, a machine movingfrom bottom .to top across the symbol grid area shallbe assumed.
4.7 Symbols on controls and displays shall havegood contrast to their background. A light symbol on adark background is preferred ‘for most controls.Displays may use either a light symbol on a dark back-ground or a dark symbol on a light background,depending upon which alternative provides the bestvisual perception, When a symbol image is reversed(for example, black to white and vrce versa) it shall bedone for the entire symbol.
4.8 Symbols shall be located on or adjacent to thecontrol or display that is being identified. Where morethan one symbol is required for a control, the symbolsshall be located in relation to the control such thatmovement of the controls towards the symbol shalleffect the function depicted by that symbol.
4.9 Arrows used in symbols shall conform to therequirements of ISO 4196. ISO 3461-1 shall be con-sulted for the general principles of creating symbols.
4.10 lSO/1EC registration numbers are shown forsymbols in this International Standard. Registrationnumbers below 5000 refer to ISO 7000. Registrationnumbers above 5000 refer to IEC 60417-1 andIEC 60417-2.
4.11 Letters-and numerals maybe used as symbols,but are not registered by lSO~C 145 or published inISO 7000. In 9.8 to 9.17, letters and numerals havethe meaning indicated when used in association withtransmission gear controls and displays on tractorsand machinew for agriculture and forestv. The foresshown in this part of ISO 3767 are not intended to berestrictive: other fonts may be substituted, but careshall be taken that legibility is maintained.
4.12 Symbols in this part of ISO 3767 are presentedwithin the outer limits of a 24 mm square grid (32 YO
of original size on the ISO graphics grid). Corner marksdelimit the corners of the 75 mm square graphics gridfrom ISO 3461-1. Corner marks are not part of thesymbol itself, but are provided to ensure consistentpresentation of all symbol graphics.
5 Colour
5.1 When used on illuminated displays, the followingcolours have the meanings indicated:
—
—
—
‘5.2
red: failure or serious malfunction; requires im-mediate attention;
yellow orambec outside normal operating limits;
green: normal operating condition.
In addition, certain colours are used for specificfunctions:
— blue: headlight main-~ igh-beam display;
— red: hazard warning display;
— green: turn signal display.
5.3 If colour is used on symbols for the heatingantior cooling systems, the colour red shall be usedto indicate hot, and the colour blue shall be used toindicate cold.
