FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalizedby the Drinks and Carbonated Beverages Sectional Committee had been approved by the Food and AgricultureDivision Council.

Gin is a distilled alcoholic beverage having aroma and taste characteristics ofjuniper berries and other botanical.

This standard was first published in 1967 and subsequently revised in 1988.

The present revision has been taken up in order to update the standard in the light of current industrial and tradepractices. The requirements of various characteristics have been modified.

In the preparation of this standard, due consideration has been given to the: (a) Prevention of Food AdulterationACL 1954 and the Rules framed thereunder; (b) Standards of Weights and Measures (Packaged Commodities)Rules, 1977; and (c) State Excise Duty Rules which permit the withdrawal of duty free samples for testing. It isrecommended that sample for testing by Bureau of Indian Standards, whenever called for, may also be exemptedfrom excise duty. The standard is subject to restrictions imposed under these Rules, wherever applicable.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value,observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with1S2:1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revise~’. The number of significant places retained in therounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1 SCOPE

This standard prescribes the requirements and themethods of sampling and test for gin.

2 REFERENCES

The standards listed in Annex A contain provisions,which through reference in this text, constituteprovision of this standard. At the time of publication,the editions indicated were valid. All standards aresubject to revision, and parties to agreements basedon this standard are encouraged to investigate thepossibility of applying the most recent editions of thestandards indicated at Annex A.

3 TERMINOLOGY

For the purpose of this standard, definitions given inIS 6749 shall apply.

4 TYPES

4.1 There shall be two types of gins designated asfollows:

a) Gin, and

b) Premix gin.

4.1.1 Gin

Gin shall be the distilled alcoholic beverage made fromneutral spirit conforming to IS 6613 or rectified spiritconforming to Grade I of IS 323 or mixture of both,with added flavours having characteristics of juniperberries and other botanical.

4.1.2 Premix Gin

IPremix gin shall be alcoholic beverage made out ofgin (see 4.1.1) and flavorings with or without colourand with or without sugar.

5 HYGIENIC CONDITIONS

Gins shall be manufactured under hygienic conditions(see IS 14348).

6 WATER QUALITY

Water conforming to IS 14543 or IS 13428 or IS 10500with or without demineralization shall be used.

7 REQUIREMENTS

7.1 Ethyl Alcohol Content

The ethyl alcohol content in gins shall be in the rangeof 37 to 50 percent by volume (65° to 87.5° proo~ or

any other strength at 20°/20 ‘C subject to approval byState Excise Authority, when determined accordingto the method prescribed in 4 of IS 3752. The tolerancelimits for ethyl alcohol content shall be +3.0 percentof the declared strength. However, the ethyl alcoholcontent, its tolerance and method of measurement mayvary according to the Rules and Regulations prescribedby the State Excise Authority.

7.2 Colour and Additives

Gin (see 4.1.1) shall be free tlom any added colouringmatter.

Natural or synthetic permitted food colours and/oradditives as defined by Codex/JECFA may be used inpremix gin (see 4.1.2). The limits shall be inaccordance with EU guidelines.

7.3 Freedom from Sedimentation and HarmfulIngredients

Gins shall be free from sediments or suspended mattersand any ingredients injurious to health.

7.4 Appearance

Gins shall be clear and shall not develop any turbidityon being diluted with water. However, in case ofpremix gins, due to presence of natural ingredients,may develop haziness on dilution with water.

7.5 Taste and Aroma

Gins shall possess the characteristic taste and aromaof gin. To enhance the characteristic flavour, natural/natural extracts/nature identical/artificial flavourpermitted under .PFA/FEMA GRAS maybe used.

7.6 Gins shall also comply with the requirements givenin Table 1.

8 PACKING

8.1 Gins may be filled in glass bottles conforming toIS 1662 or plastic bottles made of PET conforming toIS 14537 or any other suitable neutral or non-reactivefood grade containers which does not affect itsquality. The bottles or containers shall be properlysealed.

8.1.1 All new containers shall be cleaned accordingto 5.6.1 of IS 14348.

8.2 Used bottles shall be permitted if cleaned in ahygienic way by the manufacturer as per 5.6.1.1 ofIS 14348.

9 MARKING

9.1 The following particulars shall be markedlegibly and indelibly on the label/crown/body of the

label solely for products originating from that geographicalregion.

9.2 BIS Certification Marking

a) Name and type of the product;

b) Ethyl alcohol contents, in percent,

c) Batch or code number;

d) Month and year of packing;

The product may also be marked with the StandardMark.

9.2.1 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by theprovisions of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. Thedetails of conditions under which the license for theuse of Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturersor producers may be obtained from Bureau of IndianStandards.

10 SAMPLING

Representative samples shall be drawn and conformityof the material in the lot to the requirements of thisspecification shall be determined in accordance withthe method prescribed in IS 3753.
