FOREWORD

This Indian Standard ( Second Revision ) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized

by the Ferro Alloys Sectional Committee had been approved by the Metallurgical Engineering Division Council.

This Indian Standard was first published in 1963, and was subsequently revised in 1987. In view of the experience gained during these years, it was felt necessary to revise this standard. In this revision, as per prevailing practice in the industries, a new grade MSi 95 has been included and references have been updated.

Silicon metal is mostly used in the non-ferrous metals industry, particularly in the manufacture of aluminium and copper alloys. Additions of silicon imiroves physical properties. It is also used for manufacture of organo- silicon compounds. Low calcium silicon metal is used in the production of bigh aluminium silicon alloys requiring a low calcium value. Low aluminium silicon metal is used in the manufacture of copper base silicon alloys where a minimum aluminium content is required. This standard covers purity Grades MSi 99 used for

production of solar cells and Grade MSi 98.5 used for those applications which require low~aluminium and low calcium silicon metal.

This standard is intended chiefly to cover the technical provisions relating to metallic silicon, and it does not include all ~the necessary provisions of a contract.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value,

observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)‘. The number of significant places retained in

the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

METALLIC SILICON - SPECIFICATION ( Second Revision )

1 SCOPE

This standard covers requirements for seven grades of metallic silicon commonly used in the metals industry.

2 SUPPLY OF MATERIAL

General requirements regarding the supply of metallic silicon shall be as laid down in IS 1387.

3 SIZE

The material shall be supplied in the form of lumps of average size 10 to 1.50 mm with f 10 percent variation.

4 CHEMICAL COMPOSITlON

The chemical composition of the material as given in Table 1 shall be determined either by the method specified in IS 2277 or any other established instrumental/chemical method. In case of dispute, the procedure specified in IS 2277 shall be the reference method. For analysis of elements not covered in IS 2277 the referee method shall be as agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier.

4.1.1 The supply of material of a composition other than that specified in Table 1 shal! be subject to mutual agreement between the supplier and the purchaser.

5 SAMPLING

5.1 The material for chemical analysis shall be sampled in accordance with IS 1472.

5.2 The sampling for size determination shall be

subject to mutual agreement between the supplier and

the purchaser.

6 PACKING

Since iron is a major impurity the material should not

be packed in steel containers. In the absence of other

suitable containers the material shall be packed in

polythene lined double gunny bags in quantities

mutually agreed to between the supplier and the

purcahser.

7 MARKING

7-l The containers shall be marked with the following:

a) Manufacturer’s name or trade-mark;

b) Grade, designation; and

c) Size, range.

7.1.1 The material may also be marked with the

Standard Mark.

7.1.2 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by

the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the-Rules and Regulations made thereunder.

The details of conditions under which a licence for

the use of the Standard Mark may be granted to the

manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the

Bureau of Indian Standards.
