Indian StandardSPECIFICATION FOR

MINERAL MIXTURES FORSUPPLEMENTING SHEEP AND GOAT FEEDS

o. FOR E W 0 R 0

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institutionon 30 September 1983, after the draft finalized by the Animal FeedsSectional Committee had been approved by the Agricultural and FoodProducts Division Council.

0.2 Mineralshave many vital functions in the body and the vital processesin a living organism are dependent on the presence of the various mineralsalts in proper proportion. In view of the vital role of minerals, to ensureoptimum health and productivity in livestock, it is essential to provideminerals, wherever necessary, in adequate quantity and proportion. It has, therefore, become a sound animal husbandry practice to incorporate therequisiteminerals in the feed ration of animals by the addition of a mixtureof different substances containingthese minerals. It is expected that thisstandard willassist in the manufactureof a mineral mixture of the requiredquality for supplementing sheepand goat feeds.

0.3 The mineral mixture may be fed. on an average, at the rate of 3percent of the concentrate mixture under normal feeding conditions. It isexpected that farmer will add the required amount of common salt inmineral mixture to ensure growth and milk production in animals.

0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the finalvalue, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with18:2-1960·. The number of significant places retained in the rounded offvalue should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements and the methods of samplingand test for a mineral mixture for supplementing sheepand goat feeds.

-Rulesfor roundinl off numerical values ( rlvlsed ).

B-2. SCALE OF SAMPLING

a-Zel Lot - All the containers in a single consignment of. tbe materialdrawn from a single batch of manufacture shall constitute a lot. If aconsignment is declared to beconsisting of different batchesof manufacture, the batches shall be grouped separately and the containers in each groupshall constitutea separate lot.

B-2.1.1 Samples shall be tested for each Jot for ascertaining conformityof the material to the requirements of this specification.

B-3. TEST SAMPLES AND REFEREE SAMPLES

B-3.1 Pre,aradoD of Individual Samples - Draw with an appropriatesampling Instrument equal quantities of the material from different parts ofeach container selected according to Table 2. The total quantity ofmaterial drawn from each container shall be not less than I'S kg. Mix allthe portions of the material drawn from the same container thoroughly.Take out about 0'75 kg of the material and divide it into three equal parts. Each portion thus obtained shall constitute the test sample representingthat particular container and shall be transferred immediately to clean anddry containers and sealed air-tight. These shall be labelled with theparticulars given in 8-1.5. The individual samples so obtained shall bedivided into three sets in such a way that each set has a test samplerepresenting each container selected. One of the sets shall be for thepurchaser, another for the vendor and the third as the referee sample.

11-3.2 Prep.ratioD of Composite Samples - From the mixed material fromeach selected container remaining after the individual samples have beentaken, equal quantities of the material from each container shall be takenand mixed together so as to form a composite sample weighing not lessthan 0·75 kg. This composite sample shall be divided into three equalparts and transferred to clean and dry containers and labelled with theparticulars given in 8-1.5 and sealed air-tight. One of these samples shallbe for the purchaser, another for the vendor and the third as the refereesample.

B-3.3 Referee Samples - Referee samples shall consist of a let of testsamples ( see B-3.1 ) and composite samples ( see 8-3.%) and shall bear theseals of the purchaser and the vendor and shall be kept at a place agreed tobetween the two.

8-4. NUMBER OF TESTS

8-4.1 Tests for calcium shall be conducted individually on each of thesamples constituting the set of test samples ( seeB-3.1 ).

8-4.2 Tests for remaining characteristics specified in 2.4 shall be conductedon the composite samples ( see8-3.2 ).

8-5.1 Calclam CODteDt - Bach of the test results on individual samples forcalcium content shall be recorded. The mean ( g ) and range ( R) of tbetest results shall be computed as given below:

Sum of the test resultsMean (g) == Number of the test samples

Range ( R) = Difference between the maximum and the minimumvalues of the test results.

8-5.1.1 The lot shall be considered as satisfying this requirement if theexpression ( g -0·4 R) is greater than or equal to 30.8-5.2 The lot shall be declared as conforming to the requirements of thisspecification, if 8-5.1 is satisfied and all the test results on the compositesample satisfY the remaining requirements as given in this specification.
