In a few short years, Waipuna has leaped to the forefront of Hawaiian contemporary music. Winner of 7 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (Hawai’i’s “Grammys”) including Group of the Year, Island Contemporary, and Single of the Year.
The band is an exciting collaboration of three talents: Kale Hannahs, Matthew Sproat, and David Kamakahi, all from celebrated Hawaiian musical families. Their eclectic musical back-grounds yet similar tastes in music have led to their unique sound that draws comparisons to their name, “waipuna,” or spring waters—resource, life force, connecting to ancestors and nurturing generations to come.
Their music mixes Hawaiian classics and original songs in a style all their own—they are upbeat, technically superb, and share a sense of fun that makes them an immediate audience favorite.
Kawika Kahiapo is an award-winning slack key guitarist and vocalist from Oahu. His original song, Life in These Islands, was named Song of the Year in 2007.
Maui guitar virtuoso Jeff Peterson is a fast-rising star of the next generation of slack key players. A 2-time Grammy winner, Jeff is stretching the art of ki-ho’alu through his amazing command of his instrument. Five of Jeff’s songs are featured in the George Clooney film The Descendants.

In the matter of months, Run River North went from playing hometown shows in Los Angeles to performing to an audience of millions on the late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!
It was an explosive trajectory for the sextet, whose uplifting anthems march to the beat of drums, jangling guitars and a rapturous string section. The rapid ascent launched a new chapter for the Korean-American band, whose music ventures into effervescent rock, anchored with a down-home aesthetic.

A Simple Space
An audience favorite at the 2014 Complètement Cirque international festival in Montreal, these Australian artists shine with personality. Set on a stage within our own stage, the title of this show says it all. An intimate audience of less than 200 surrounds a stripped-bare stage for an acrobatic display of strength, skill and creativity accompanied by driving live percussion. It’s fast-paced physical theater that is vividly up-close and personal, immersing the audience in every thrilling, and sometimes dangerous, moment.

The King’s Singers’ ability to communicate with audiences worldwide is what has earned these six Englishmen their reputation as the world’s most sought-after a cappella ensemble. Like a painter with brush and palette, The King’s Singers vocally create the full spectrum of color through music and text to express the entire range of human emotion.
The ensemble returns to the Barclay after many years with a program ideally suited to their musical roots. The first act features various musical interpretations of The Lord’s Prayer by the likes of Igor Stravinsky, Leonard Bernstein and John Tavener; and in its second half, a selection of audience favorites.

Dr. Arthur Benjamin makes numbers dance. He is a Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California and a professional magician. In this entertaining and fast-paced performance, Dr. Benjamin demonstrates how to mentally add and multiply numbers faster than a calculator, how to figure out the day of the week of any date in history, and other amazing feats of mind.
He is the winner of the national teaching award from the Mathematical Association of America, and was listed by Princeton Review as one of America’s Top 300 professors.

This group of Quebecois performers is blazing a path not yet explored—the circus arts infused with picturesque facets of Quebec folklore.
You can almost smell the fresh-cut pine logs. Performed to live traditional music, the experience feels and smells authentic. Inspired by the natural elements of the forest, the artists perform incredible feats of acrobatics, juggling, and other circus skills. These talented artists and musicians create a colorful, energetic experience featuring epic feats of agility and strength, drawn from the exploits of lumberjacks and loggers.

Keola Beamer & Henry Kapono are two legends of Hawaiian music. Each of these icons rose to fame at the creative forefront of the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970’s and they continue to lead the way. Keola & Henry each perform a set, and then come onstage together to celebrate their original songs that have become beloved classics of contemporary Hawaiian music.
Keola Beamer’s contributions to slack key guitar during the 1970s began to spark public interest in kı-ho’alu, launching a statewide revival of the tradition. His 1978 release, Honolulu City Lights, is the largest selling recording in the history of Hawaiian music. Today he is one of Hawai’i’s premier singer-songwriters, arrangers, composers and masters of the Hawaiian slack key guitar.
Henry Kapono along with Cecilio Rodriguez became the wildly popular phenomenon Cecilio & Kapono (aka C&K). They helped forge the sound of 70’s Hawaiian music, with laid-back contemporary rock that voiced the feelings of an entire generation. Today Henry is a Grammy-nominated and award-winning singer and songwriter.

Dance Magazine hails her as “a master of visual composition.” Jessica Lang seamlessly incorporates striking design elements and classical ballet vocabulary into artfully crafted, emotionally riveting contemporary works.
Formerly a member of Twyla Tharp’s company, Lang has created more than 80 works for companies worldwide. Since creating her own company in 2011, she has enjoyed rapid success performing at renowned venues and festivals including Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival, the Kennedy Center, and the revered Joyce Theater in New York City.
She is quite simply a choreographer whose time has come.

Simply put, Farruquito is the best flamenco dancer performing today. From Spain’s Los Farruco dynasty, and grandson of the legendary El Farruco, Farruquito made his Broadway stage debut at age five, starred in Carlos Saura’s film Flamenco at twelve, and was directing his own shows by fifteen. He is the embodiment of flamenco puro.
His show, Improvisao, is flamenco in its purest form—authentic and visceral—with improvisation at its core. The dancers and musicians come together to share their lives and artistry relying solely on the inspiration of the moment. Farruquito explains that Improvisao “is a return to my roots... Singing, guitar and dance fused with total freedom to create a different show every day.”

Torobaka is a unique, genre-bending creative collaboration between two master choreographers and dancers. The Irvine concert will be the first of only four engagements in the U.S. of this London-based, Sadler’s Wells’ production.
The name of the production is taken from a Maori-inspired phonetic poem by Tristan Tzara. The bull (toro) and the cow (vaca) are sacred animals in the dancers’ respective Spanish and Indian traditions.
Akram Khan is known for his wildly imaginative full-evening productions including Desh, Gnosis, and Vertical Road, which was presented at the Barclay in 2012.
Israel Galván, a cross-over artist from the avant garde of flamenco, was first featured at the Barclay in the New World Flamenco Festival in 2003.
The dancers are accompanied live by an extraordinary ensemble of musicians and singers.

Kahulanui’s energy and dynamic musical arrangements have caused a sensation throughout the Islands. And now, Hawai’i’s Kings of Swing, as they are known, are bringing their unique style to audiences across America.
The nine-piece band—four horns plus guitar, bass, ukulele, drums and steel—blends traditional Hawaiian music and the Big Band Swing of the 1920’s and 30’s to create a sound that’s all their own—invigorating, vibrant and timeless.

Widely recognized as “the Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele,” Jake Shimabukuro has created an international fanbase as a sensational performer whose concerts leave audiences awed and delighted. Over the past decade, he’s become a one-man army advancing the ukulele cause, turning the four-string axe into a virtuoso musical vehicle, capable of generating everything from effects-laden rock to sensuously swinging jazz. He coaxes an impossibly big sound out of this little instrument, playing an intoxicating mix of pop tunes, American Songbook standards and lilting originals.
Jake has collaborated with an array of artists that include Yo-Yo Ma, Jimmy Buffett, Bette Midler, Cyndi Lauper, Jack Johnson, Ziggy Marley, Dave Koz, Michael McDonald, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, Tommy Emmanuel, and Lyle Lovett —as well as orchestras around the world. He has sold out world-class venues, played at Bonnaroo, SXSW, the Playboy Jazz Festival, Fuji Rock Festival, the influential TED conference, and even performed for Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Variety Performance in Blackpool, England.

The Quebe Sisters (rhymes with “maybe”) are 3-time national fiddle champions from Texas. When these ladies take the stage, playing and singing in multi-part close harmony, audiences are usually transfixed, then blown away. It’s partly because the trio’s vocal and instrumental performances are authentic all-Americana and respectful of the artists that inspired them the most.
In addition to headlining their own shows to ever-growing audiences, they’ve shared stages with American music legends such as Willie Nelson, George Strait, Merle Haggard, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Ray Price, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel, and Riders in the Sky.
The Quebe’s unbridled passion for American music, their talent, skill and hard work have taken them far beyond their wildest early aspirations. “One thing is for sure, you don’t see a group like the Quebe Sisters come along every day,” famed Opry announcer Eddie Stubbs told listeners on his own show on Nashville’s WSM. “Give them your undivided attention, and if you’re not already, you, too, will become a fan.”

First presented by the Barclay nearly 25 years ago under the auspices of its founding artistic director, Lou Conte, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago has become one of America’s most influential contemporary dance companies. The company is known now for its eclectic, international repertory and for its impeccable dancers.
Hubbard Street has been a friend of the Barclay’s founding president, Douglas Rankin, since before the opening of the theatre in 1990. Glenn Edgerton, the current artistic director and company visionary, will curate a special program in honor of the Barclay’s 25th anniversary season.

Drones and beats, crimson beads and towering black lambs-wool hats all serve as a striking backdrop for an unexpected, refreshingly novel vision of Eastern European roots music. This is the self-proclaimed “ethno-chaos” of Ukraine’s DakhaBrakha.

Architecture in Motion

Jacques Heim is trained in architecture. He is fascinated by the built environment and how humans interact with it. Heim’s works often incorporate elaborate structures that support and inform the trademark physicality of his dancers.
Closing the theatre’s 25th anniversary dance series, Diavolo will present the world premiere of L.O.S.T., a dramatic full evening of dance designed in two sections. The first, Cubicle, was work-shopped at the Barclay in January 2015. It is a rapidly moving reflection on the cramped routine of mid-century America. The second section finale is currently under development. How it unites the evening with typical Diavolo bravado will be a surprise to us all.

Winner of the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz vocal competition, Cécile McLorin Salvant has become one of the most celebrated young vocalists in jazz. Her visibility got a boost via work with Wynton Marsalis, but her American debut album, the Grammy-nominated WomanChild, was the first real opportunity for American audiences to hear why Salvant had become a European sensation. The Jazz Journalists Association named her the 2014 Female Singer of the Year and Up and Coming Artist of the Year.
Over the course of the past decade, Grégoire Maret has emerged as a unique and compelling new voice across a wide spectrum of the modern jazz world. That his chosen instrument—the harmonica—is a relative rarity in the genre is just one element in his singular sound. The extensive list of heavy-hitters who have enlisted him for their own projects is unparalleled: Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Cassandra Wilson, and Marcus Miller, to name a few. More recently, he’s worked alongside some of the biggest names in music, including Sting, Prince, and Elton John at the Rock for the Rainforest concert.

Be there for the birth of four new ballets created as part of the intensive 3-week process of the National Choreographers Initiative. Artistic Director Molly Lynch invites four choreographers of note, as well as sixteen professional dancers from ballet companies across the country, to participate.
NCI is a southern California project with national influence. Over the past twelve years, NCI has brought 48 different choreographers to California to develop new works. Many of the pieces begun here have gone on to be performed elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad. The project culminates in a public performance that showcases the excitement of new creation.
