Horticulture Lesson PlanSeth Stoddard, Woodburn Agriscience & Technology Dept
Unit of Study: IrrigationLesson: Greenhouse & Nursery Irrigation Methods
Lesson Objectives: After this lesson, the student will be able to:--identify different types of greenhouse irrigation--identify how nursery plants are irrigated--identify advantages to using one method over another
Materials: PowerPoint “Greenhouse & Nursery Irrigation Methods”Examples of different sprinkler and emitter types to pass out during powerpoint
Anticipatory Set—--Ask students what types of sprinklers they have seen at their house (most will say either hose-end or pop-up lawn sprinklers)--Ask them why sprinklers are used versus just letting the hose run--Ask them if they have their sprinklers on a timer and if so, why“Today we’re going to see what types of irrigation greenhouses & nurseries use for growing different types of plants”
Pre-Instruction—Review the terms: irrigation, containerized plants, microspray, impact sprinkler, emitter
Instruction--PowerPoint “Greenhouse & Nursery Irrigation Methods”Offer personal testimony to further illustrate points in presentation.
Guided Practice—(specific to Woodburn’s greenhouse/landscape irrigation systems)--Take students to the greenhouse & landscape area to practice identifying what they saw in the PowerPoint. --Ask students why basket drip emitters are better than overhead spray for flowering annuals--Ask students why pop up sprinklers are better than impact for greenhouse table watering--Show students how the sprinkler timer works and how to program it--Show students the fertilizer injector and how to calibrate it
Review/Check for UnderstandingWhat are the advantages to using microspray irrigation? Why do rooted cuttings need a mist irrigation system? What are the disadvantages to using impact overhead sprinklers for mature trees? Why would a grower want to put fertilizer into their irrigation lines?
