    A.Goal of Project

    The goal of this project is to test the effectiveness of multiple designs of

    buildings in diverting wind blow to a direction. I will create scaled model of

    modern building designed to direct wind blow and test it in a small scale usinghigh powered fans and dry ice to trace the wind flow around the building.

    After Ive come to a conclusion on which model is the best, I will try to create

    a model of a city with buildings arrangement that can maximize wind flow so

    that the temperature of the city will be lower. This kind of design would be

    relevant in hot tropical countries in Indonesia.

    Research BackgroundThe construction of skyscrapers involves the consideration and calculation

    of many factors that can disrupt the buildings integrity that could lead to

    the building being damaged. In short, to keep the building from collapsing.

    One of the factors that engineers need to consider is the wind. As

    skyscrapers became higher, wind speed will increase. Wind that could,

    damage the buildings general structure. The most basic thing that engineers

    had done is to strengthen the foundation of the building itself, this can be

    done by planting concrete cores in the center of the building, but modern

    designers have realized that the shape of the building itself plays a major

    role in reducing the amount of force a building must endure from being

    exposed to high velocity winds.

    The main reason engineers and designers had been creating new and

    innovative shapes of skyscrapers is mainly to reduce the force taken by the

    building from the wind but during my experiment, the factor that I will

    observe the most is not the force but rather the direction of the wind after it

    hits the building as the goal that Im trying to achieve is to create a small

    model of a city block with building designs that I hope will divert wind

    flow to the bottom so that pedestrians and everyone on the street will feel

    wind blowing around them and make the hot streets of cities like Jakarta a

    lot more bearable.

    C.Research Specification

    1.C.1 Research question

    Diverting wind flow after it hits a building to the bottom should not be

    too complicated, but my goal is to make a city block and this means

    multiple buildings and this would be a challenge. I will also need to

    consider a design that would keep the wind from blowing too strong to

    the bottom because in real life this might result in

    Mentor and Expert request

    Because this experiment project is related to physics, I will attempt to

    request Pak Halim to be my supervisor. I will also ask another one of

    my teacher, Pak Widodo to be one of my expert.

    D.Method and Process

    1.D.1 Research Methods

    Research will be done using the internet and books. I will also make

    appointments with my experts to consult on my design for the wind

    diverting buildings.

    Experiment Methods

    I will make scaled model replica of building designs that are currently

    being used to asses the wind flow direction of those design. I will also test

    multiple shape of building and make a design of my own and test it too.

    The test will be done using a high powered fan and dry ice to determine the

    direction of the wind flow.
