past leveling systems. • It helps us dig deeper into how the student is
reading and discover exactly what skills they need to improve on.
• Your child may have some holes in their reading skills that need to be taught before they advance to the next level.
Lexile vs. IRLA• Lexile levels books by looking at the – number of words per page– sentence structure
• IRLA levels books by looking at the – number of words per page– sentence structure– vocabulary– topic readability
This Year’s Focus• Our goal is to help every student find their
Fast, Fun, and Easy reading level.• Students read 30 minutes at school.• Students should also read 20-30 minutes at
home every day.
What Students Need at Home to Support Reading Practice
• Block out distractions – turn off the tv, radio, computer.
• Read with your child or watch him/her read.• Talk to your child about what he/she reads.• Make sure the books come back to school
safely.

At-Home Reading Coaching Tips
• Have fun• Set a scheduled time for 20-30 minutes of
