Chairman’s introduction
The Irish Concrete society is delighted to publish this illustrated catalogue of entries to the 36th Irish Concrete society Awards Competition, this year’s celebration of excellence in design and construction in concrete. The society was established in 1973 to support and encourage technical excellence in concrete design and construction. we do this, in part, by offering industry formal education, technical seminars, technical guidance/support and by offering recognition of achievements through our awards scheme.
Each year the society recognises the contribution that our third level institutions make to education and research in Concrete Technology with the student Award. This Award, which commemorates the late Professor seán de Courcy, an inspirational lecture of engineering at uCd and former chairman of the society, will be presented this evening to a student for the most impressive Bachelor or Masters Degree final year project.
The main awards comprise three categories, from which one overall winner is selected. These categories are: Building; Infrastructural; and Elemental with the winners of the Building and Infrastructural categories eligible to enter the biennial European Concrete society network Awards. now in its 6th year, the International Award, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland, is in recognition of Irish companies who export technical excellence in concrete. we will also award the biennial sculpture Award which acknowledges sculptors who work with concrete as a medium of expression. On behalf of the Council of the Society, I wish to thank the jury members who gave up there time voluntarily to adjudicated all entries.
The signs that we are recovering after a major downturn in construction activity is evident in the interest in this year’s award scheme and we congratulate the entrants in the various categories and acknowledge their inspiration, creativity and ability to bring together the skills that are necessary to deliver excellence in Concrete.
We thank you for your continued support and I wish you a most enjoyable evening.

Main Awards
The Irish Concrete society will again make an award for excellence in design or construction of a completed building, structure or concrete element, irrespective of type, scale or complexity, in concrete.
The Award scheme is organised to enable the society to acknowledge construction achievements in which concrete, in any form contributes significantly to the built environment. Entries relating to the contribution made by concrete to any aspect of building, civil engineering, architecture, art or landscaping will be accepted by the society.
Entries are subdivided into three categories:
• Building • Infrastructure • Element (Housing or small projects e.g. walls, stairs, paving)
There will be one overall winner chosen, with category winners in the other sections, depending on the level and quality of entries.
International Award
The jury will judge entries on the basis of the following criteria:
• Technical excellence in the use of concrete displayed by the Irish entrant company
• The entry should represent a significant achievement for the Irish entrant company illustrating ambition in both business and technical aspects.
• Marks will be awarded for the use or development of an innovative solution to overcome a technical challenge.
