THE AGE OF THE GREAT SELJUQS NEWThe Idea of Iran, Vol. 6Edited by Edmund Herzig and Sarah Stewart

From their ancestral heartland by the shores of the Aral Sea, the medieval Oghuz Turks marched westwards in search of dominion. Their conquests led to control of a Muslim empire that united the territories of the eastern Islamic world, melded Turkic and Persian influences and transported Persian culture to Anatolia. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries the new Turkic-Persian symbiosis that had earlier emerged under the Samanids, Ghaznavids and Qara-Khanids came to fruition in a period that, under the enlightened rule of the Seljuq dynasty, combined imperial grandeur with remarkable artistic achievement. This latest volume in The Idea of Iran series focuses on a system of government based on Turkic ‘men of the sword’ and Persian ‘men of the pen’ that the Seljuqs (famous foes of the Crusader Frankish knights) consolidated in a form that endured for centuries. The book further explores key topics relating to the innovative Seljuq era, including: conflicted Sunni-Shi’a relations between the Sunni Seljuq empire and Ismaili Fatimid caliphate; art, culture and ceramics; and poetry and architecture.192 PAGES 234 X 156MM MAY 2014978178076 947 9 HARDBACK £39.5015 B&W INTEGRATEDTHE IDEA OF IRAN SERIES, VOL. 5THE IDEA OF IRAN

ANCIENT PERSIA IN WESTERN HISTORY NEWHellenism and the Re-presentation of the Achaemenid EmpireSasan Samiei, UCL

The Achaemenid Empire, founded by Cyrus the Great in the 6th century, was at its height the largest empire the world had yet seen, stretching across Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Because this first Persian Empire fought a series of wars against the Ancient

Greek city-states, it has often been cast in opposition to the Hellenistic cultures of the period. Ancient Persia in Western History is a measured rejoinder to the dominant narrative that considers the Graeco-Persian Wars to be merely the first round of an oft-repeated battle between the despotic ‘East’ and the broadly enlightened ‘West’. Sasan Samiei analyses the historiography which has skewed our understanding of this crucial era - contrasting the work of Edward Gibbon and Goethe, which venerated Classicism and Hellenistic history, with later writers such as John Linton Myres. Finally, Samiei explores the cross-cultural encounters which constituted the Achaemenid period itself, and repositions it as essential to the history of Europe, Asia and the Middle East.320 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 20149781780764801 HARDBACK £59.50INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES

MEMORY AND IDENTITY IN SASANIAN PERSIA NEWSacred History and the Historiography of Ancient IranTouraj Daryaee, University of California, Irvine

The Sasanian Empire was one of the most significant empires of late antiquity. As the dominant force in the Middle East, spanning Egypt, India and Mesopotamia, the Sasanian kings from Ardashir I (224CE) ruled an imperial, centrally administrated, multi-lingual state. Here, Touraj Daryaee shows how

the idea of Iran - its attributes, mores, values, boundaries and traditions - was brought to the Zoroastrian, Jewish and Christian populations of the Sasanian Empire and accepted and internalized by these religious communities. By tracing the political accommodations reached in the the Sasanian court back to the Zoroastrian texts of the Avesta, Daryaee demonstrates why scholars, scribes and the state continued to emulate and propagate the memory of the Peshdadian, Kayanian and Sasanian empires - even into the Islamic period. Memory and Identity in Sasanian Persia will be an essential work for scholars of Iran, Zoroastrianism and those seeking to understand the history of Middle-Eastern antiquity.224 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 20149781780762487 HARDBACK £52.50INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 44

CONVERTING PERSIA NEW EDITIONReligion and Power in the Safavid EmpireRula Abisaab, University of Akron, Ohio

As the divide between Shi‘i and Sunni Muslims has dominated headlines in recent years, never before has it been more essential to examine the historical roots of Shi‘ism’s establishment in Iran, the only country in the Middle East to have Shi ‘ism as its official religion. It was under the Safavids (1501-1736 CE) that this occurred, and in this book, Rula Abisaab explains how and why this specific brand of Shi‘ism was adopted. Urban and legally based, it was brought to the region by leading Arab ulama from Ottoman Syria, and has changed the face of the region until this day. These émigré scholars furnished distinct sources of legitimacy for the Safavid monarchs, and an ideological defense against the Ottomans. Just as important at the time was a conscious and vivid process of ‘Persianization’, both at the state level and in society. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM JANUARY 20149781780767789 PAPERBACK £17.99

THE HISTORY OF THE LATE REVOLUTIONS IN PERSIA NEWAn Eyewitness Account of the Fall of the Safavid DynastyJ.T. KrusinskiIntroduction by Rudi Matthee, University of Delaware

The fall of the powerful Safavid Dynasty (1501-1722) to invading Afghan tribesmen in 1722 marked a crucial turning point in the country’s history. Father Krusinski,

Procurator-General of the Jesuit Mission and intermediary between the Papacy and the Safavid court, resided in Isfahan and was thus an eyewitness to the siege of the city. His account of the conditions and events preceding and during the siege and the subsequent demise of the Safavids is unique. It also offers key insights into the workings of the late Safavid state and government as well as the functions of the royal harem. This set includes the translation of the Clodius edition undertaken at the behest of the Ottoman Grand Vizier Damat Ibrahim. Together, these scarce volumes provide a unique source of information on late Safavid Persia. With an introduction by leading contemporary scholar, Rudi Matthee, the set will be welcomed by academics, collectors and libraries.328, 288, 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM APRIL 20149781780764689 HARDBACK £250.003 VOLS

RITUAL CURSING IN IRAN NEW

Theology, Politics and the Public in Safavid PersiaRosemary Stanfield-Johnson, University of Minnesota Duluth

Ritualized cursing had long been a part of popular culture in medieval and early modern Iran. When the Safavids seized power in 1501 and imposed Shi’i Islam as the established faith of the country, they appropriated the practice in the service of the state, compelling their subjects to curse ritually the first three (Sunni) caliphs in street and square

- or face decapitation. Rosemary Stanfield-Johnson here demonstrates that in a largely oral society both the royal court and the emerging Shi’i religious establishment understood that controlling the medium meant controlling the message, and therefore society itself. Moreover, the ritual of public cursing also served the interests of the people. Because the new government could rely on a reservoir of shared cultural expression, it found willing participants among its subjects, for whom the practice became more than an act of compliance. With a new perspective on the transition from Sunni to Shi’i Iran, ‘Ritual Cursing in Iran’ is essential for all those interested in Safavid Iran and Islamic history, as well as the relationship of politics and religion in the public sphere.304 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 20149781848852921 HARDBACK £54.50INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 22

PERCEPTIONS OF IRAN NEWHistory, Myths and Nationalism from Medieval Persia to the Islamic RepublicAli M Ansari, University of St Andrews

From the Sasanian to the Safavid Empire, and from Qajar Iran to the current Islamic Republic, the history of Iran is one which has been coloured by a rich tradition of myths and narratives and shaped by its wealth of philosophers, cultural theorists and political thinkers. Perceptions of Iran dissects the construction of Iranian identity, to reveal how nationalism has been continually re-formulated and how self-perceptions have been carried by Iran’s literary past, in particular the mystical love poetry of Rumi, Sa’adi and Hafez. It traces a long history of encounters with the Western world and tracks Iranian thought from Herodotus’ representation of Cyrus to the Constitutional Movement of the early twentieth century. This book ties together the diverse threads of Iranian intellectual activity that have underpinned social and political movements, from nineteenth-century discourses on a liberal nationalism to the anti-Westernism of figures such as Sayed Jamal Al-Afghani and Ayatollah Khomeini. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM JULY 20139781848858305 HARDBACK £56.50

FORMING NATIONAL IDENTITY IN IRAN NEWThe Idea of Homeland Derived from Ancient Persian and Islamic Imaginations of PlaceAli Mozaffari, University of Western Australia

Modern Iran is a country with two significant but competing discourses of national identity, one stemming from ancient pre-Islamic customs and mythology, the other from Islamic Shiite practices and beliefs. This has left an often confused notion of identity in Iran. Ali Mozaffari explores the complex processes involved in the formation of Iranian national identity, laying particular stress upon the importance of place to ideas of homeland and the creation of a collective national identity. He illustrates his arguments through an analysis of the ancient Achaemenid capital of Persepolis and the Shiite rituals of Moharram. In a concluding part, he extends his analysis to the Ancient Iran Museum and the Islamic Period Museum, housed in the National Museum of Iran. An important work that offers powerful insights into the forces shaping national identity in Iran.256 PAGES 234 X 156MM NOVEMBER 20139781780764436 HARDBACK £56.00

POLITICS AND CONTEMPORARY IRAN

CULTURAL REVOLUTION IN IRAN NEWContemporary Popular Culture in the Islamic RepublicAnnabelle Sreberny & Massoumeh Torfeh (Eds) both at SOAS

The Islamic Republic of Iran has entered its fourth decade, and the values and legacy of the Revolution it was founded upon continue to have profound and contradictory consequences for Iranian life. Despite the repressive power of the current regime the immense creativity of popular cultural practices, which negotiate and resist the system, is a potent and dynamic force. This book draws on the expertise and experience of Iranian and international academics and activists to address diverse areas of social and cultural innovation that are driving change and progress. While religious conservatism remains the creed of the establishment, this volume uncovers an underground world of new technology, communication, media and entertainment that speaks both to women seeking a greater public role and to a restless younger generation that organises and engages with global trends online.288 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 20139781780760896 HARDBACK £56.50

PERSIAN SERVICE NEWThe BBC and British Interests in IranAnnabelle Sreberny and Massoumeh Torfeh both at SOAS (Eds)

Rumour and speculation in Iran have been rife for generations that the BBC has had a hand in every political upheaval in the country. In this vein the BBC has become a notable element in the complex and tortured narrative of Anglo-Iranian relations. The BBC Persian Service was initially developed in 1940 to prepare and broadcast British war-time propaganda. And it has since been

seen by many in Iran as an integral part of British policy-making in the region. Those participating and organising the British-planned removal of Reza Shah in 1941, the CIA-led 1953 coup against Prime Minister Mohammad Musaddiq and the domestically inspired Iranian Revolution of 1978-79, have all at one time or another been accused of having links with the BBC. In this book, Annabelle Sreberny and Massoumeh Torfeh track the history of the BBC’s Persian Service, critically analysing both the assumptions that the corporation is a standard bearer for objective reporting and representations of it as a simple tool of Western interests. 224 PAGES 234 X 156MM JANUARY 20149781848859814 HARDBACK £40.00

EVERYDAY IRAN NEWA Provincial Portrait of the Islamic RepublicClarissa de Waal, University of Cambridge

Iran is a country which, despite its extensive coverage in the media, is often regarded as ‘mysterious’, ‘exotic’ and ‘other-worldly’. This attitude often stems from a focus on the rhetoric of controversial figures in Iranian politics, rather than looking at the everyday lives of Iranians themselves. Clarissa de Waal uses her training as an anthropologist to examine the experiences of individuals, with a focus of the province

of Fars in southwest Iran. This serves to highlight contemporary Iran outside of the capital, which so often dominates western understanding of the country. Using a wide range of subjects, from public sector workers and entrepreneurs to Qashqa’i tribes people (both settled and nomadic), students and the unemployed, de Waal examines the everyday existence Iran’s population from a variety of backgrounds. CONTROLLING IRAN NEWThe Struggle for Power in the Islamic RepublicSiavush Randjbar-Daemi, University of Manchester

In the wake of the election of Hassan Rouhani as President of Iran, and the expectations that have been heaped upon a potential opening of the country, the struggle for power in Iran has never before been so widely commented upon, and yet, at the same time, so little understood. Here, Siavush

Randjbar-Daemi presents an in-depth analysis of the presidency of Iran from the Iranian Revolution of 1978-79 to the present day. He examines the relationship of the presidency to the Supreme Leader: a position first held by Ayatollah Khomeini, and then by the former president, Ali Khameinei. 336 PAGES 216 X 135MM SEPTEMBER 20149781780765266 HARDBACK £25.00

POLITICAL ISLAM IN POST-REVOLUTIONARYIRANShi’i Ideologies in Islamist DiscourseMajid Mohammadi, Glenville State College, West Virginia

The relationship between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Western World is fraught with challenges and tensions. In order to generate the capacity for greater engagement and dialogue, there is a need for the West to better understand the complex ideological developments that

are central to Iran. Majid Mohammadi charts the central concepts and nuances of the ideological map of post-revolutionary Iran, and examines the rise and development of Shi’i Islamism. He recognises that the Islamic Republic of Iran and Iranian political discourse are the outcome of contesting perspectives and ideologies: identity-oriented, socialist, nationalist, authoritarian, Shari’a, scripturalist, mystical, militarist and fascist. This is a comprehensive, comparative contribution to one of today’s most important topics: that of the relationship between Political Islam and the West.288 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 20139781848852761 HARDBACK £56.50INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 24

THE IRAN CONNECTION NEWUnderstanding the Alliance with Syria, Hizbullah and HamasAmal Saad Ghorayeb

As Iran’s suspected nuclear ambitions place it on an apparent collision course with the western powers and the Arab Gulf states, understanding its regional alliances takes on a huge strategic importance. The Lebanese group Hizbullah, the Palestinian group Hamas and Bashar al Asad’s Syria are all critical players in the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the puzzle of their relationship to their Iranian allies has confounded diplomats for

many years. Would Hizbullah start a war on Israel’s northern border in the event of an Israeli air-strike on Iran? Can Syria be prised from the alliance? How will Hamas’s negotiating position evolve? Drawing on her unique access to decision-makers in Lebanon, Tehran and Damascus, Amal Saad Ghorayeb unpicks this unusual strategic bloc of secularists and Islamists, Arabs and Iranians, Sunni and Shia, and seeks to provide a rigorous analysis of its mechanics. The Iran Connection is essential reading for anyone looking to understand the real dynamics of today’s Middle East.256 PAGES 234 X 156MM AUGUST 20139781848857407 HARDBACK £29.95

MODERNITY AND THE STATELESS NEWThe Kurdish Question in IranAbbas Vali, University of Bogazici

The Kurds are the largest stateless nation in the world. They live under the jurisdiction of four sovereign states – Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria – which deny their national identity and suppress its political and cultural manifestations. The diversity that springs from this division has deprived

the Kurds of ideological cohesion and political unity. Offering a wealth of new information on the history and politics of Kurdish nationalism, this book also looks at the wider issues of stateless nations, their identities, rights and obligations and the problems such nations pose for normative political theory which presupposes the framework of the modern nation state.256 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 20149781860640506 HARDBACK £39.50LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES, VOL. 26

ARAB-IRANIAN RIVALRY IN THE PERSIAN GULF NEWTerritorial Disputes and the Balance of Power in the Middle EastFarzad Cyrus Sharifi,Kings College London

Iranian ambitions in the Persian Gulf and rivalries with Arab neighbours are subject to intense – and heated – speculation, controversy and debate. Here, Farzad Cyrus Sharifi scrutinises the rival Arab-Iranian claims to Bahrain, the Shatt al-Arab waterway, and the Abu Musa and Tunbs islands in the years after World War II and before the Iranian revolution. Through investigation of previously unexamined primary materials and interviews with leading players, this book sheds new light on the evolution and dynamics of hegemonic and nationalistic Arab-Iranian rivalries and how these rivalries began to find symbolic expression through territorial disputes. Sharifi illustrates that these ongoing disputes – and the deep-seated 320 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 20149781848858220 HARDBACK £59.5011 B&W INTEGRATED, 1 MAPLIBRARY OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, VOL. 62

MASCULINITIES IN URBAN IRAN NEWYoung Men in Contemporary Iranian SocietyMehri Honarbin-Holliday, Canterbury Christ Church University

Men in Middle Eastern societies are often viewed by the popular Western media only in the context of religious fundamentalism and the subjugation of women. This new book shifts the discourse on gender, usually focused on women, to men in the Middle East, and to young men in Iranian society in particular - and in the process fills a

crucial gap in our understanding. It illustrates that, contrary to common perceptions that Iranian men are ‘tough’, there is an acute desire among young men for women’s approval and friendship, and to be recognised as sensitive and cosmopolitan. Mehri Honarbin-Holliday examines the conflicting factors and complexities involved in the formation of Iranian masculine identity, including the ideals of Persian cultural heritage, the pull of traditional familial and societal expectations, the memory of the 1979 revolution and its aspirations, and the pressures of being outwardly committed to Iran’s political system. 56 PAGES 234 X 156MM AUGUST 20149781848857360 HARDBACK £54.5015 INTEGRATED B&W

TRIBESWOMEN OF IRAN NEWWeaving Memories among Qashqa’i NomadsJulia Huang

Since the revolution in 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran has permitted few Western scholars to conduct research in the country. Here Julia Huang provides a remarkable account of local tribal life in Iran and depicts a community largely beyond the scope and reach of foreign travellers and the Western media. Huang documents the difficult livelihoods and lifestyles of these mobile Qashqa’i pastoralists and their society and

culture, and she explains how this Turkic-speaking group relates to the wider Iranian society and the Islamic Republic. Focusing on a small group of women, she shows us how they adapt to a rapidly changing world while retaining tribal values and a distinctive ethnolinguistic identity as one of Iran’s largest national minorities. Engagingly written and documenting a disappearing way of life, Tribeswomen of Iran is essential reading for all those interested in Iran, the Middle East, anthropology, nomadism and gender.288 PAGES 216 X 134MM FEBRUARY 20149781845118327 HARDBACK £59.509781780765389 PAPERBACK £14.9910 IN 8PP COLOUR PLATES, 25 B&W INTEGRATED

PICTURING IRAN NEWArt, Society and Revolution Lynn Gumpert and Shiva Balaghi, both at New York University

When assessing the history of twentieth century cultural forms, non-western art can no longer remain relegated to the margins, viewed as derivative and imitative of canonical Western artistic modes. This assessment of modern Iranian visual culture from the 1960’s and 1970’s suggests that modernity in Iran was a creative, complex and contested process. The book examines the expression of Iranian modernity in

a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, posters and graphic arts. It highlights new modes of artistic production within an expanding institutional context, such as developments in Iranian art criticism, exhibition apparatus, education and patronage. The contributors also address changes in the iconography of Iranian art and in the increasingly social role of the artist. Ultimately, these patterns of artistic production influenced the art that accompanied the Iranian Revolution of 1979.128 PAGES 246 X 189MM JUNE 20149781780768984 PAPERBACK £16.99ILLUSTRATED IN COLOUR AND B&W

PERSIAN KINGSHIP AND ARCHITECTURE NEWStrategies of Power in Iran from the Achaemenids to the PahlavisSussan Babaie, Coulthard Institute and Talinn Grigor, Brandeis University

Since the Shah went into exile and the Islamic Republic was established in 1979, the very idea of monarchy in Iran has become contentious. Yet, as leading scholars argue here, the institution of kingship has played a pivotal role in articulating an abstract notion of Iran since antiquity. This, in turn, has served as a unifying cultural force

despite shifting political and religious allegiances. Analyses of palaces, mausoleums, art, architectural decoration and urban design from the Achaemenids to the Pahlavis show how architecture was appropriated by different rulers as an integral part of their strategies of legitimizing power. Drawing on archaeology, antiquity, and medieval Islamic and modern secular architectural history, ‘Persian Kingship and Architecture’ is indispensable for all those interested in Iranian studies and visual culture, as well as art, architectural and social history.320 PAGES 256 X 189MM MAY 20149781848857513 HARDBACK £60.00

ALLEGORY IN IRANIAN CINEMA NEWAn Aesthetics of Poetry and ResistanceMichelle Langford, University of New South Wlaes, Sydney

Since the 1979 revolution, Iranian filmmakers have been creating vibrant, aesthetically rich cinema – whilst working under strict state censorship laws. How have they achieved this? As Michelle Langford reveals, many have found indirect, allegorical ways of expressing forbidden topics and issues in their films, drawing on a long history of allegorical expression in Persian poetry and the arts. Allegory in Iranian Cinema explores the allegorical aesthetics of Iranian cinema, explaining how it has emerged from deep cultural traditions and how it functions as a strategy for ideological resistance. She uses a range of cinematic, philosophical and cultural concepts - developed by thinkers such as Walter Benjamin, Gilles Deleuze, Henri Bergson, Vivian Sobchack and Laura Marks - to provide a theoretical framework for detailed analyses of films by renowned directors such as Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Majid Majidi, Rakhshan Bani-Etemad, Hana Makhmalbaf and Jafar Panahi.272 PAGES 234 X 156MM MAY 2014

THE WILD RUE OF PERSIA NEWMagic, Myth and Folklore in IranBess Donaldson

The Wild Rue is a unique study of myth and magic in Iran. Bess Donaldson spent thirty years in Iran as both missionary and teacher and in this classic work she records the beliefs and superstitions of country at a time when they were increasingly under threat from the tremendous changes brought about by the Shah’s programme of modernisation. This earlier way of life, with its belief in angels

and the evil eye, and with its age-old rituals surrounding childbirth and burial, is recounted in an informed yet highly readable text. A unique study of magic, myth and folklore with chapters on cosmology, names and numbers, snakes, dreams, talismans and signs, childbirth, angels, the evil eye, and the calendar. A classic work, long unavailable but now back in print.240PAGES 234 X 156MM MARCH 20149781780769455 HARDBACK £56.00

HAFIZ AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES NEWA Study of Fourteenth-century Persian Love PoetryDominic Brookshaw, University of Manchester

Hafiz of Shiraz has long been celebrated by many as the greatest Persian poet within the annals of world literature. During the fourteenth century he was master of the Persian ‘ghazal’ – the pre-eminent genre of love poetry in the Iranian world in its day and which, in the hands of Hafiz, reached the pinnacle of its development

and refinement. Dominic Brookshaw here places Hafiz into a broader literary context by comparing his poetry with his two most important contemporaries: ‘Ubayd-i Zakani and the poet-princess, Jahan-Malik Khatun, whose ‘ghazals’ have received insufficient scholarly attention to date. Brookshaw presents here for the first time many previously untranslated ‘ghazals’. This detailed comparison enables a truer picture of the distinct and innovative nature of Hafiz’s poetry to emerge.288 PAGES 234 X 156MM JUNE 20149781848851443 HARDBACK £56.50BRITISH INSTITUTE OF PERSIAN STUDIES, VOL. 3

PERSIAN PICTURES NEWFrom the Mountains to the SeaGertrude Bell

When Gertrude Bell’s uncle was appointed Minister in Tehran in 1891, she declared that the great ambition of her life was to visit Persia. Several months later, she did. And so began a lifetime of travel and a lifelong enchantment with what she saw as the romance of the East, which evolved into a deep understanding of its cultures and people. This vivid and impressionistic series of sketches, her first foray into writing, is an evocative meditation that moves between Persia’s heroic past and its long decline; the public face of Tehran and the otherworldly ‘secret, mysterious life of the East’, the lives of its women, its lush, enclosed gardens; from the bustling cities to the lonely wastelands of Khorasan.208 PAGES 198 X 126MM FEBRUARY 20149781780766928 PAPERBACK £11.99TAURIS PARKE PAPERBACKS
