Efficacy of Celero 16WSG (clothianadin), DPX-E2Y45, Safari (Dinotefuron ), Tristar (acetamiprid), Flagship 25WG (thiamethoxam), and Precise (acephate) against Japanese beetle adults Objective: The primary objective was to evaluate new insecticides against the Japanese beetle Experimental Procedures: This research was conducted from the Griffin Campus of the University of Georgia. Eighty, five gallon black pussy willows, Salix gracilistyla ‘Melanostachys’, were provided by Harps Farm Market and Nursery, Fayetteville, GA. Plants were maintained under standard irrigation and maintenance regimes during the Japanese beetle flight period. Plants were treated on June 13, 2006 and arranged in a randomized complete block design with ten replications (individual plant reps) in an area with historically heavy Japanese beetle populations in southeastern Spalding County. Products were applied with a CO2 powered back pack sprayer equipped with a meter jet gun. Granulars were applied with a hand held shaker. Beetle density was recorded at one week, two weeks, and one month post application. Height and average width of plants was recorded twice during the study. A final damage (% defoliation) assessment was made one month after application. All data were subjected to analysis of variance using the GLM procedure of SAS and means were separated using LSD. Results: Japanese beetle pressure was high. Within one week beetle density varied by treatment (Table 1) with Scimitar, Flagship, Tristar and DPX-E2Y45 providing significant reductions relative to the untreated control. Celero, Safari and Precise were statistically similar to the utc on that date. At two weeks post treatment all except Safari had significantly reduced beetle densities relative to the control (Table 2). Beetles had declined by the four week post evaluation (Table 3) with only the untreated plants supporting a small but significant population. Plant heights were not significantly different on either date (Tables 4 and 5). Plant widths were affected by treatment at two weeks (Table 6) but not four weeks post treatment (Table 7). Defoliation was reduced in all treatments relative to the control and was least on plants treated with Scimitar, Precise, Tristar or DPX-E2Y45. No phytotoxicity was observed. Table 1. Mean number of Japanese beetle adults per plant one week post treatment
