Introduction to TM

3

1.4 million homepass

covered under

HSBB project

100 over IPv6 peering

globally

4.4

Million PSTN

subscribers

2 million

broadband

subscribers

20 POPs for global

coverage

>700 Thousand

Kilometers' of

fiber rollout

•Largest communications provider in Malaysia

•Established in 1968 as the Telecommunications

Department of Malaysia, privatized in 1987 and

re-branded as Telekom Malaysia in 1991.

TM has deployed IPv6 beginning 2004 …

4

Tunnel over existing IPv4 ISP backbone

Very few customers and peering connections back then

6PE was introduced with the new IP Core network in 2007

PE routers are dual-stack and terminate customer circuits

while the core routers remain in IPv4 MPLS

Compliance audit on network readiness in 2008

And things remained low key until April 2011!

Get everyone involved

5

Deployment Approach

6

• Support existing services (on IPv4)

• Provide end-to-end IPv6 connectivity

• where possible, work with existing

network architecture and network

elements

• Enable the core network

• Dual-stack approach per service

• Provide WAN & LAN IPv6

• Default dual-stack for broadband &

Internet services

• By-request for corporate VPNs

• Selective OSS system enhancements

• Awareness top-down, left & right

•Improve technical specs, support from

existing hardware & software vendors

• Incompatible CPEs

• " Why do I need IPv6?“

• Dual-stack incur resources

Guiding Principles Approach

Challenges

7

Making it possible ..

9

Increase in overall IPv6 traffic in the our network after dual-stack broadband

was introduced

10

•Only 28 % CPE is ready!

• May not use supplied CPE, older CPE range or

disabled IPv6

• Top applications are Youtube, Facebook and BitTorrent

TCP Protocol

Youtube

BitTorrent

Observation

11

Misconception : IPv6 brings more bandwidth or speed than IPv4

Much time spent in troubleshooting connectivity problems at CPE/modem

Behavior of Dual-Stack

Common Questions :

When will TM offer IPv6?

How many IP addresses will I get?

Will TM replace my modem?
