thing and the tips I get from these meetings are very helpful. So that means that we will be asking our host to teach us about his product rather than give us a sales pitch. Also we are going to ask our more experienced members to teach us on what they know. In our business, time is money, and the quicker I get the job done, the quicker I get paid and off to the next job.
Thank you Brian Parson for leading our discussion, you are a valuable

Fort Worth Chapter It was sure good to see Phil Sharp, our outgoing Region 9 Director, at our last meeting. He updated us on new information on the Region level and things to come. We had some updates on APEC, which is working very hard to find solutions to water restrictions being put in place in cer-tain areas.
We have also decided to split the chapter. Fort Worth covers an ever expanding area and with two chap-ters, some current and future mem-bers will have shorter travel dis-tances to meetings. We feel that by offering more opportunities we can further expand IPSSA membership in Texas.
It is imperative that if you want a vote or to help with the division that

INDUSTRY NEWS New Service Licensing Bill Introduced in Florida By Dan Schechner | 1.13.2012
A bill introduced this month in the Florida legislature would amend current licensing requirements for all swimming pool service technicians. HB 1259, sponsored by state Rep. Larry Ahern (R-St. Pe-

Though the statewide pool industry remains approximately 70 percent below the peak years of 2005-06, the service
sector has been relatively stable throughout. As a result, unwanted and often illegal competition has flooded the field in recent years. Some estimate as many as 4,000 service techs are oper-ating illegally across the state. But industry professionals are optimistic this latest effort at regulation will encourage those on the fringes to join the mainstream. Among its two main provisions, HB 1259 broadens the type of work that falls under the existing service techni-
calls for licensing of service professionals who perform construction, remodeling and installation or repair of equipment. But if the bill passes, it will mandate that professionals who perform cleaning, maintenance and water treatment be licensed as well. In addition, the bill revises an important eligibility require-ment that many believe has prevented applicants from seeking licensure. Currently, an individual must have at least one year of proven experience in the field plus confirmation by a li-censed service company before he or she is able to take the service exam. But that often created a roadblock.

Another member passes Ronnie E. McGuire (Ron) Born 7/24/1952 Died January 2012 I ran into Ron at a supply house back in 1987 shortly after starting my company. We had formed a working relationship that grew into a great friendship. He was very knowl-edgeable in all aspects of the pool industry. He was ready and willing to help anyone that needed help, be it with advice, with hands on at a job site, or just answer a question. In 1991 he joined Ipssa San Anto-nio, this was his 20th year. He was a past President of the chapter and was still active as Chairman of the Standing Rules commit-tee. He was respected by all who knew him and was a true leader in the industry. He will be missed. Be at piece my Friend Phil Sharp

Bucket Test By Monte Routon Monte Routon is with American Leak Detection, Sacramento, California. This arti-cle was reprinted from the November IPSSA Capital Valley Chapter newsletter It has been a while since I listed the procedure for the bucket test. We always want to make sure a customer's pool is leaking before we make an appointment for a leak test. A simple way to confirm that there is in fact a leak is to have them take these easy steps. 1. Bring the pool water to normal level. Fill a five-gallon bucket with pool water to about 1 inch from the top. 2. Place the bucket on the first or second step of the pool. Ensure that the bucket is immersed in the pool at least five inches. 3. Mark the water level inside the bucket. 4. Shut off the pump and mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket. 5. Resume normal pool pump operation. 6. After 24 hours, compare the two water levels. If the pool water (the out-side mark) goes down more than the bucket's water level, there is proba-bly a leak. If the water levels are the same, only evaporation has oc-curred.
