The InternationalResearchNetwork (IRN),ASEANChinaNorms (2019-2023), ispartof theNationalCentre forScientificResearch(CNRS).ItwascreatedinpartnershipwiththeFrenchInstituteofResearchonEastAsia(IFRAE)and the French Centre on Contemporary China (CEFC),which is part of the “GIS Asie”, or FrenchNetwork forAsian studies. The Centre for Southeast Asian Studies (CASE/UMR 8170), supports the implementation of itsactivitiesin2019.TheIRNinvolves11InternationalResearchLaboratoriesinSocialSciences(SouthEastAsiaandEastAsia)and40Researchers.Several events are expected to take place in 2019 as part of the IRN. After its launch on 1 February, for theEuropeanandNorthAmericanstakeholders,anINALCOconferencewillbeheldon28thofMarchandtheIRNwillbe launched,forasecondtime, inHanoionthe4thand5thofApril2019withtheAsiancounterparts.Finally,aMethodologicalSummerSchoolisscheduledinMalaysiafromthe8thtothe14thofJuly2019.Thelatterintendsto share research knowledges and practices, in particular the French expertise, to a diverse array of students(master’sdegree;PhD;Post-doc).The trainingwillbedeliveredby11 trainers to25studentsandwill focusonsensitive topics in China and Southeast Asia such as conducting of social sciences research in highly diversepolitical regimes. The summer schoolwelcomes the participation of students from French institutions (EHESS,INALCO, Paris 7, etc) and from Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos). The colleges of SarahLawrence,VassarCollege,BardandBennington,constitutingtheConsortiumonForcedMigration,DisplacementandEducation(CFMDE)havealreadyselected8studentsfromtheStateofNewYork.ThelanguageofinstructionisEnglish.TheprogrammeoftheSummerschoolismultidisciplinaryasitisdeliveredbytrainersfromdifferentfieldswhohavestudiedpowerinSoutheastAsiaandChinainitsdifferentaspectsandatvariouslevels:politicalsociology,politicalsciences,anthropologyandpoliticaleconomy.TheprogrammeistheresultoftheclosecollaborationofseveralresearchlaboratoriesoftheAsean-China-NormsnetworksuchastheUniversityofMalaya,theNationalUniversityofCanberra,theCentreofSoutheastAsia(CNRS-EHESS-INALCO,Paris)andLIRIS(U.Rennes2,Rennes).The GIS Asie, Malaysian and Franco-Malaysian institutions (Institut Pondok Perancis, University TerengganuMalaysia, PerakHeritage Society) are supporting the initiative, aswell as the researcherswho are individuallyinvolvedinthenetwork(ParthibanMuniandy,SarahLawrenceCollege,NY;ValeriaBonatti,UniversityofIllinois,Urbana-Champaign;ClémentSéhier,Clersé,Lille).TheprogrammeoftheSummerschoolisstructedin5trainingsessionstakingplaceeachdayoftheweekfrom9amto3:30pm.Asdisclosedintheprogrammebelow(page3),anewthemeisaddressedeachdayoftheweekbyoneor two researchers. The latter all have remarkableexperiences in conducting research inEastAsia andSouthEastAsia.TheevolutionofsocialnormsintheregionwiththeChineseinfluencewillbediscussedduringthe programme: economic administrations or Chinese business network inMalaysia and Cambodia; workingconditions in the firms inChinaandCambodia;movementof citizensandworkers inChina. Therewill alsobesessions on field work about the Southeast Asia Royalty (Thailand, Brunei); Ethnographic methodologicalapproaches to Migrant, Undocumented and Transborder populations (Malaysia); Evaluating developmentalpolicies from the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach perspective in Malaysia; and parallel political networks inMalaysiaandIndonesia.Local personalities (Member of Parliament; Religious leader; Royalty member; journalist) may also join somesessions. Ultimately, in order to better illustrate the topics discussed in trainings, some site visits should beorganised(PerakRoyalMuseumofKualaKangsar;PoliticaladministrationinLumut).Inadditionoftheseactivities,arangeofshortsitesurveyswillbeconductedinIpohandthendiscussedwiththetrainers.LaureSiegel,aninvestigativejournalistbasedinSouthEastAsia(ARTE,NikkeiAsianReview,Mediapart)withexperiencesindeliveringtrainingonmedia,willinstructstudentshowtoconductfieldreportingandwritingoffieldnotes.Besides,thestudentswillbeencouragedtodiscusstheiracademicperspectiveswiththetrainers,whatprogresstheyaremakingintheirmaster’sdegreeorPhD.Dedicatedsessionsarescheduledforthismatter.Finally, theSummerSchoolwill endwitha sitevisitorganisedby thePerakHeritageSociety.OnSaturday, thestudentsandthetrainerswillleaveIpohfortheverymulticulturalislandofPangkorwherethehistoricalpoliticalTreatywassignedbetweentheBritishandtheSultansofPerakin1874.
