IntroductionThe iPod interface can be used to connect an iPod to your in-car infotainment system and allows you to play audio files directly over the infotainment system.

The iPod interface is located in your car's glove box. It is compatible with 3rd generation or higher iPod1) devices (made from about 2003 onwards), with the exception of the iPod Shuffle and the iPhone.

The iPod is controlled using the CD function of the infotainment system (sound system or navigation system).

The infotainment system allocates the playlists on the iPod first in numerical order and then in alphabetical order, as follows:

• Chorus / concert sound system, Navigation System BNS 5.0: allocation as CD 1 to CD 5

• Symphony sound system: allocation as CD 7 to CD 11

The easiest way to use playlists on the car's entertainment system is to create five playlists on the iPod (e.g. 1 to 5).

All the tracks on the iPod will be played as follows even if they are stored in different playlists:

• Chorus / concert sound system, Navigation System BNS 5.0: via CD 6

• Symphony sound system: via CD 12

Information stored on the iPod, such as artist, track, album and genre, or the name of a playlist, does not appear on the infotainment system display.

WARNING

• Today's driving conditions require your full attention. As the driver, you have full responsibility for the safety of the vehicle and other road users. For this reason, operate the iPod only when the traffic conditions allow you to do so safely and when you can maintain proper control of your vehicle - risk of accident!

• The volume of the audio sources (radio, CD player, etc.) should only be set at a level which enables you to hear distant police and emergency vehicles clearly - failure to do so could result in an acci-dent.

CautionVery high or very low temperatures (a common occurrence in a car's interior) can cause damage to the iPod and/or impair its perform-ance.

• Please do not leave your iPod in the vehicle in case of extreme temperatures.

Setting up

Choosing the adapter

The iPod interface is supplied with a choice of adapters for connecting your iPod.

iPods come in different sizes. For this reason, you will need to match the iPod interface ⇒ fig. 1 to your iPod using one of the adapters supplied. Some iPods (touch, 5G (video), classic) require two adapters.

The iPod interface is supplied with the following adapters:

1. Narrow adapters of different heights for insertion in the centre slot at the bottom of the bay .

2. Slim adapter cards for insertion in the slot at the top of the bay .

3. Wide adapter housings for insertion in the bay .

You do not need an adapter for some iPods (e.g. iPod Photo 60 GB)

CautionThe iPod must be firmly seated in the iPod interface. The iPod may be damaged if it is not installed correctly.

• Make sure that the iPod is fixed in place with one of the adapters supplied.

Note• Suitable adapters for older iPods can be obtained from your Audi dealer.

• For more information on which adapters can be used, see the Internet (e.g. www.audi.com).

Inserting the iPod in the iPod interface

– Switch on the infotainment system.

– With the display facing upwards and the contact towards the front, slide the iPod into the bay until you feel it engage. The iPod will switch on automatically and the battery will be charged.

– If the infotainment system does not detect the iPod after you insert it, please “reset” the iPod (refer to the iPod operating instructions).

To start the iPod, press the / button repeatedly.

The iPod is switched off automatically when you switch off the info-tainment system or the ignition.

Note• To ensure optimum sound quality, you should activate the “Sound Check” setting on the iPod and deactivate the “EQ” (equalizer) before inserting the iPod (please refer to the iPod operating instructions).

• The battery is charged with 5V. Older iPod devices with a 12V connection (launched before 2005) cannot be charged.

• Slight scoring marks may occur on the iPod when used with the adapter.

Operation

Functions

The iPod is operated just like a CD changer using the controls on your car's infotainment system.

The following functions are available:

• Play all tracks stored on the iPod

• Select and play up to five playlists (just like selecting CD 1 to 5/CD 7 to 11 on a CD changer).

• Change between playlists (just like changing the CD on a CD changer)

• Fast forward/rewind within a track

• Change tracks within a playlist

• SCAN function

• Shuffle function (random selection of tracks)

For more information on how to operate the system, please refer to the “CD”/“CD/MP3” chapter in the operating manual for your info-tainment system.

Notes

Here are some tips and points to remember when using the iPod in the car:

For all infotainment systems• Track numbers appear with a maximum of two digits on the info-tainment system display. The first digit is suppressed if you select a track with a three-digit number, i.e. track 125 and track 25 are both displayed as track “25”. For this reason we do not recommend allo-cating more than 99 tracks to each playlist.

• If you reach the end of a playlist when selecting a track directly (forward/reverse), the count is resumed at track “1”.

• The track numbers are counted up sequentially on the infotain-ment system display when you play tracks in shuffle mode (MIX).

For Navigation System RNS-E2)

• The navigation system's display always shows 99 tracks, even if the playlist contains fewer tracks.

• When selecting a track, we recommend you not to jump forward or back more than 49 tracks at a time. If you jump further than this, the iPod interface may not select the track you intended.

For Navigation System BNS 5.0We recommend you not to use the “Name CD” function, as all the playlists will then be allocated the same name.
