Gestures and Techniques

• Tap

• Double Tap

• Tap, Hold, and Drag

• Flick and Swipe

• Pinch

Tap

• As clicking on a mouse is to a desktop computer, so is tapping to an iOS device.

• You tap to open apps, bring up controls, acknowledge menus, and more.

Double Tap

• Tap an object twice in succession to effect a double-tap.

• Double-taps are primarily used for zooming in or out on text, but third-party apps also use double-tap for various other functions.

• Double-tap on a “Safari” screen zooms in and out.

• Double-tap in iBook and it adds removes objects from the borders.

Tap, Hold and Drag

• For some functions---such as highlighting text, coping and pasting, or deleting and moving apps---you’ll need to tap and hold down on the screen.

• Dragging also comes into play for moving objects in apps, drawing, and swiping and flicking.

Flick and Swipe

• Drag your finger across the screen---up, down, left or right---to swipe. This is the primary navigational tool in iOS.

• A flick is a swipe only faster. The IPad supports inertial scrolling, which means the faster or slower you move your finger, the faster or slower content will move.

Pinch

• Using your thumb and index finger– Spread apart to open a closed collection of photos

– To close the album, bring your thumb and index finger together.

– To zoom in, make a photo larger, spread your thumb and finger.

– To zoom out, make the picture smaller, pinch your fingers together.

Rotate

• Just hold two fingers on the screen and make a circular motion in either direction.

Open Settings by tapping on this icon.

Connecting to a WI-FI network.Select Wi-Fi by tapping on the Wi-fiicon.

Turn Wi-Fi on by tapping on the Wi-Fi on off switch

Connecting to a WI-FI network.This should cause the iPad to begin searching for available networks.

From the list box select a network, in this case select JPS.

The three symbols at the right of the Network name, sometimes referred to as SSID, mean:

Padlock, indicates this a secure network and will you will need a password to connect.

The three arcs indicate signal strength, choose the one with the most bars, or arcs.

The right facing arrow indicates that there is more info availble.

Connecting to a WI-FI network.The screen on the right represents what is shown by tapping on the right facing arrow.

Notice next o Wi-Fi in the left column, the iPad is not connected to any network; therefore, there is no information on this screen.

You should never have to change any settings under the other icons.

To close this screen and go back to the previous screen tap Wi-Fi Networks on the top center of this screen.

Connecting to a WI-FI network.Back on the Wi-Fi screen, Tap JPS, since this network requires a login, an enter password dialog box opens.

Enter your standard computer login in the box. This is login that you use to access your school mail or login into your computer every morning.

After entering you username, tap Password box. After you enter your password, tap the return key

To close the screen you can tap this button.

Connecting to a WI-FI network.Since the JPS network uses a certificate authentication, you will be asked to accept, simply click on the accept button.

Connecting to a WI-FI network.You will know your successful when in the Wi-Fi box on the left shows the name of the network you are connected to.

If the Wi-Fi box is highlighted there will also be a check box next to the Network you are connected to in the list box. You can change networks by simply tapping on another network name.

Now that you have joined the JPS network the iPad will always connect to that network when you come into range.

Setting Up EmailTo get to this screen, tap the Settings Icon from your home screen.

Tap the Mail, Contacts, Calendars in the list found on the left hand side.

Tap Add Account….

This produces a list of mail programs. The iPad can synchronize to any number of different accounts.

For this case select Microsoft Exchange.

Setting Up EmailUse the keyboard and fill in the information in the dialog box. You will need to tap each box as you move down through the list. If you hit return the dialog box will close and the program will attempt to login to your email account.

The description can be any text you would like, for example, JPS mail, work mail, etc.

After you filled in the last box, tap on the blue “Next” icon in the upper right hand corner of the display.

Setting Up EmailYou will need to then add the server name in the server dialog box. Please make sure you spell it correctly, placing the “dots”, periods in the proper places.

The Server name is: owa.jcisd.org

Setting Up EmailNow it asks you what you would like to sync. Simply tap the on/off switch to select if you would like to add Contacts and Calendars.

When you are finished tap the Save button.

Also note that near the top you can add additional accounts.

Searching for an AppType your application title in the search Window.

The App store will immediately begin making suggestions. At anytime you can make your selection by simply tapping on the title. In this case Ibooks.

The Application DescriptionThe Apps store provides a detailed description of the App you have selected. At the bottom of the page (not shown here, you would need to scroll down) you could read reviews posted by customers.

If this is the App you want to purchase select Install App by tapping here.

When the screen first appears the Install App will be replaced with a price or free. You must first tap the price.

Create A New Apple IDEven though the App is free, it still want to know where to charge it too. This will generate an invoice that will be emailed to your account’s email address. The next few slides will walk you through setting up a New account.

If you already have an iTunes account, you could choose to use and existing account.

Steps to setting up a new AccountThe reason we set up the itunesaccount this way was to get this dialogue box. This is the only place you can setup an itunes account without using a credit card. However, if you were to purchase an app you would then be asked how to pay for it. At that time you could give credit card information or use an itunes gift card, you have likely seen hanging around your local stores.

Steps to setting up a new AccountIt will ask you for a name, just use your own, for the phone I used my JPS phone number. You are responsible for your iTunes account.

Your iTunes account is transferable. If you purchase your own ipod, ipad, iphone or want to use itunes on any computer all purchase made to your itunes will load on these devices.

JPS will not reimburse you for any purchases made during this trail. Purchases made during this trail will not be available on the Ipads in the classroom unless purchased using the schools itunes account which will be administered by the Principal or their designee.

Setting Up IBooksYou can modify how Ibooks will operate by tapping the Settings icon and selecting Ibooks from the left hand column.

All application use this process to set up operating behaviors, some more extensive than others.

Filling the ShelvesNow that we have the App loaded you can click on Winne the Pooh and explore how Ibooks operates. But, first let’s purchase our first book by clicking on the “Store” button in the upper left hand corner.

Finding the bookType the search terms, name of the book or author in the search window.

Select the Book from the screen by tapping the “FREE” icon. If you tap the book itself it will give you details much the same way that the App Store detailed the Applications.

Since you had just used your itunesaccount, itunes remembered you and used the payment information you entered when the Ibook application was purchased.

You can play the Podcast by tapping on the podcast.

Select iTunes U from the Library.

• Fill in the Form that was just passed out.

• Print your name

• Print clearly the serial number– To get the serial number

– In Settings open the General category.

– Open about in the right hand pane.

• Sign and date the form.

• Return the Ipads on the first day of the August PD (August 29th). I will be there collecting them near the auditorium.

• A one page paper or bullet points on the topic of “How I plan on using this Technology in my classroom”– As simple as one project or as complex as using
