Lesson 1: Navigating Your iPad and Browsing the Web

    Figure 2

The sideways triangles send you Back or Forward, so you canmove back to the previous Web page or forward to a later Webpage.

The next button helps you access your Bookmarks, bringing up alist of saved Web sites.

The icon allows you to add a Web site as a bookmark, toyour Reading List (for reading later) or Home screen, and emailor Tweet the link.

Within the Address Bar, youll see either an X or a circular arrow.Click on the X to interrupt the download of a Web page, or clickthe circular arrow to refresh the page youre already viewing.

When you first open a Web page, you see the whole page, not just partof it. To get a closer look, you need to use your fingers to zoom in.There are three ways to do this: 1) rotate your screen from Portrait toLandscape mode; 2) do the two-finger spread (put your thumb andforefinger close together on the screen and move them apart); or 3) sim-ply tap twice. Learn more about these shortcuts in Beyond the Lessons.

Once you have browsed a few Web pages, you may be ready to savesome of them as bookmarks. Tap the Open In . . . button and press AddBookmark. When you do, the following will appear (see Figure 3):

  • You can customize the name of your bookmark here, and by press-ing the Bookmarks button you can specify where you want the book-mark to goon the Bookmarks Bar (which appears right below theAddress Bar in your browser, for easy access), into the Bookmarks list,or within a folder you create yourself (to create a folder, press Edit onthe Bookmarks list, then press the New Folder button). Click Save, andyoure done.

To manage your bookmarks, tap on the Bookmarks button andthen press Edit. You can do a few things here: Press New Folder to create a topical folder to better manage your

  • Tap on the bookmark itself to edit the name or URL of the book-mark.

Tap and hold on the lines to move the bookmark up or downto another location in the bookmarks list.

Thats it! Now you can start surfing the Web, and bookmark any sitesyou want to visit later.

The last major upgrade to Safari introduced a new feature thatother browsers already had: tabbed browsing. You can now keep mul-tiple sites open in Safari by opening a new tab for each site. To open anew tab, just press the button, located to the right of the last tab.To delete a tab, press the X on the tab you want to remove.

Surfing the Web on the iPad is a lot of fun, and more satisfying than trying to view a Web site on a smaller phone. But the iPad offersso much more; lets get your email, calendars, and contacts set up next.
