Introduction

Need of  IP Phone

• The IP phone is designed to work within the VoIP (Voice over IP) environment. In essence, the IP phone allows you to make telephone calls over the IP network, converging voice and data over the same connection as an alternative to the standard PSTN. Calls made on an IP phone traverse the Internet, or the private IP network of a particular company. 

• Conversation is conveyed in digital form not in analog form like for classic phones

Operation

The IP Phone 2001 brings voice and data to the desktop environment. It connects directly to the LAN through the Ethernet connection.

When an IP Phone 2001 is connected to the network, it must perform a startup sequence. The elements of the startup sequence include:

• • obtaining the IP parameters• • finding a default Gateway server• • authenticating the user

Gratuitous Address Resolution Protocol Protection (GARP)

• Prevents  GARP spoof attacks on the n/w

Spoof attacks:

• a malicious device on the network takes over an IP address (usually the default gateway) by sending unsolicited (or Gratuitous) ARP messages, thus manipulating the ARP table of the victim’s machine. This allows the malicious device to launch a variety of attacks on the network, resulting in undesired traffic routing.

For example: a GARP attack can convince the victim machine that the malicious device is the default gateway. In this scenario, all traffic from the victim’s machine flows through the malicious device.

Extensible Authentication Protocol

• represents a technology framework that facilitates the adoption of Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) schemes, such as Remote Authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS)

• 802.1x defines the following three roles:

• Supplicant — an IP Phone which requires access to the network to use network services.

• Authenticator — The authenticator acts as the proxy between the supplicant and the authentication server. The authenticator controls access to the network based on the authentication status of the supplicant.

• Authentication server — performs authentication of the supplicant

Advantages

• Low calls costs     

e.g: skype

Call transfer and call hold

Preserving user name/ number when choosing a different service provider (not widely supported).

Applications like weather report, Attendance in school and offices, Live news etc.

Disadvantages

• Requires Internet access to make calls outside the local area network (LAN)

• VoIP phones and the routers depend on mains electricity for power, unlike PSTN phones, which are supplied with power from the telephone exchange. However, this can be mitigated by installing a UPS. 

• VoIP phones, like other network devices can be subjected to denial‐of‐service attacks as well as other attacks especially if the device is given a public IP address[2]; This is especially significant as an issue with wireless devices using 802.11 protocols
