Are you new to scanning VIP Club coupons? Need a refresher?

Iowa Lottery VIP Club members receive a coupon each month via email, or they may access their coupon when they log in to the VIP Club website. The procedure for scanning these coupons is similar to other types of coupons, but there are some differences.

First, be aware that the coupon could be on paper or it could be presented to you on the screen of a mobile device. Either way, here’s the procedure:

• Scan the coupon BEFORE making the play.

• Hold the square bar code under the red light of the bar code scanner (this applies whether it’s on the screen of a mobile device or on paper)

• To manually enter the coupon, press the SPECIAL FUNCTIONS tab on the terminal’s main screen, then press COUPON. Key in the 16-digit code that is under the bar code on the coupon

• A pop-up screen asks if the player wants an easy pick or to use a play slip

• Press “Easy Pick” button for an easy pick

• Insert a play slip to use that option

You can press “Cancel” if the player doesn’t know if they want an easy pick or play slip, or doesn’t have a play slip ready (pressing Cancel at this point does not void the coupon). Once the player has decided which option they want, scan the coupon again and complete the process.

NOTES: Coupons may only be used once. If a coupon has already been redeemed, the terminal will give an error message: “Coupon Already Redeemed.”

Keep the coupons to balance your cash drawer; Lottery reps will not pick them up. After the cash drawer is balanced, appropriately

destroy the bar code and dispose of the coupon so it cannot be presented again.

How to Process a VIP Club CouponVIP Coupons May Be on Paper or Via Mobile Device

Iowa Lottery retailers need to be familiar with the procedures for paying prizes in all types of situations. Lottery rules state that prizes may be paid to persons of any age, but there are different consider-ations in paying those who are under 21.

First, all tickets must be signed before they can be checked or validated.

• Paying someone under age 18 - These people are minors in the eyes of the law. If the person entitled to a prize is under the age of 18, the payment of the prize may be made with cash or a check payable to the order of the minor or to a parent or legal guardian of the minor. Claim forms and tickets submitted by a

minor must be signed by the minor as well as the minor’s parent or legal guardian.

• Paying someone ages 18, 19 or 20 – They may claim prizes in Lottery games as long as the claimant did not actually purchase the ticket. The claimant cannot use the prize winnings to purchase lottery tickets.

• Paying someone age 21 or over – Retail locations may pay Lottery prizes of up to $600 if sufficient funds are available. Prizes larger than that must be claimed at a Lottery office.

Retailers should always remember that tickets may not be sold to persons under the age of 21.

Mason City Woman ‘Couldn’t Calm Down’ After $50,000 WinA Mason City woman has won a $50,000 lottery prize on a ticket

purchased for her by her boyfriend.

Laura Swai, 36, won the third top prize in the Iowa Lottery’s “5 Spot” scratch game. Her boyfriend, Robert Greer, purchased the winning ticket at Hy-Vee Gas, 1503 Fourth St. SE in Mason City.

“I actually sent my boyfriend in to get some scratch tickets and some donuts,” Swai said with a laugh. “Then, I scratched it at his house and it was the first line that I scratched off.”

Swai, who works at Kraft Heinz in Mason City, said she was in disbelief when she revealed her prize amount.

“I just started jumping up and down and screaming,” she said. “I couldn’t calm down all day yesterday.”

Swai claimed her prize at the lottery’s regional office in Mason City. She said she plans to use part of her winnings to pay bills and save the rest.■

Are you new to scanning VIP Club coupons? Need a refresher?

Iowa Lottery VIP Club members receive a coupon each month via email, or they may access their coupon when they log in to the VIP Club website. The procedure for scanning these coupons is similar to other types of coupons, but there are some differences.

First, be aware that the coupon could be on paper or it could be presented to you on the screen of a mobile device. Either way, here’s the procedure:

• Scan the coupon BEFORE making the play.

• Hold the square bar code under the red light of the bar code scanner (this applies whether it’s on the screen of a mobile device or on paper)

• To manually enter the coupon, press the SPECIAL FUNCTIONS tab on the terminal’s main screen, then press COUPON. Key in the 16-digit code that is under the bar code on the coupon

• A pop-up screen asks if the player wants an easy pick or to use a play slip

• Press “Easy Pick” button for an easy pick

• Insert a play slip to use that option

You can press “Cancel” if the player doesn’t know if they want an easy pick or play slip, or doesn’t have a play slip ready (pressing Cancel at this point does not void the coupon). Once the player has decided which option they want, scan the coupon again and complete the process.

NOTES: Coupons may only be used once. If a coupon has already been redeemed, the terminal will give an error message: “Coupon Already Redeemed.”

Keep the coupons to balance your cash drawer; Lottery reps will not pick them up. After the cash drawer is balanced, appropriately

destroy the bar code and dispose of the coupon so it cannot be presented again.
