in Iowa
Funded by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources - 2015
• Estimated food waste for ICI entities located in Iowa – Universities,
Convention Centers, Casinos, Correctional Facilities, Food Distributors and Wholesalers,
Food Manufacturers, Hospitals, K-12 Schools, Nursing Homes, Restaurants, Grocery Stores
• Industry factors developed by pioneers in the country estimating
food waste– Massachusetts
• RecyclingWorks Massachusetts conducted food waste audits at
seven public elementary schools from 2007-2013
Findings suggest students waste an average of 0.1
pounds of food per lunch

• Each student generates 0.4 pounds of food waste during lunch
• Each student generates 65 pounds of food waste per school year
• K-12 students in Iowa in 2016-2017 generated an estimated 33,423,650 pounds of
food waste or 16,712 tons.
Results of Waste Sorts at K-12 Schools in Rural Iowa
According to the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa had 514,210 students enrolled in K-12 schools, both public and private in 2016/2017 school year.
