7. Council Election voting

▪ Email was sent on the 21st June 2018

▪ One of the candidates is the an ex-chair Mr Neleesh

8- IOSH conference and Network conference

▪ 2 members from the branch committee to attend the 2 day of the IOSH conference on

17-18 September 2018 and the Network conference on 19 September 2018

▪ IOSH HO will cover your travel, accommodation and conference pass.

▪ Attendance of day 2 of the IOSH conference is linked to the Network Conference and

is non-transferable (i.e. if you are planning to attend but cancel, the ticket will be

cancelled and not transferred to someone else)

▪ In addition to the above you are offered 2 free passes for someone from the

committee (or branch) to attend the 2 day IOSH conference BUT cost of travel and

accommodation cannot be covered by IOSH, only by the individual.

▪ Nominees for this year are: Chair & Vice Chair

▪ Two passes are available for committee members

ICC Birmingham 17-18 (Conference) & 19 (Network)

▪ Training sessions, site visits, workshops and

CPD/IPD sessions to be included in programme.

▪ Committee to make themselves more available at

meetings. Introduce themselves at the beginning of

the meeting to let attendees know that they can

speak with them during networking break

▪ Encourage members to register for meetings

beforehand so we can get a better idea of numbers

Engineering Ethics

A field of Applied ethics and system of moral principles that apply to the practice of engineering

• “A set of rules, principles or ways of thinking that guide, or claim authority to guide, the actions of a particular group.”

Practical Ethics (1993), Peter Singer

• The UN Ethics Office offers five lines of service:

• Confidential ethics advice

• Ethics awareness and education

• Protection against retaliation for reporting misconduct

• Financial disclosure programme

• Promotion of coherence and common ethics standards across the UN family

Code of Ethics for Engineers

&Rules of Practice

Engineers Shall :

• Perform services only in the areas of their competence

• Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public

• Issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner

• Act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees.

• These basic ethical principles and others are established and reinforced in the NSPE Code of Ethics for Engineers (NSPE Publication 1102) and are consistent with the ethical and competent practice of engineering and the protection of the public health, safety and welfare above all other considerations.

• IEEE Code of Ethics:

to hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public, to strive to comply

with ethical design and sustainable development practices, and to disclose promptly factors that might endanger the public or the environment;

• PMI's Code of Ethics :

" according to the Project Management Institute (PMI). PMPs are held to a code of ethics to ensure decisions and actions are always honourable and in the best interest of stakeholders.

It is important to understand that personal morality is not being questioned.

Personal morality and professional ethics, however, are not always the same.

professional ethics increasingly requires engineers to protect the environment, regardless of their personal moral convictions.

Where are we ?

• An interesting historical guide:

Leonardo Da Vinci recorded in his journal that: he had discovered how to make a vessel that can move about underwater—a kind of submarine -he refused to share this idea with others on the grounds that he feared it would be used for immoral purposes.

‘‘I do not publish or divulge on account of the evil

nature of men who would practice assassinations

at the bottom of the seas, by breaking the ships in

their lowest parts and sinking them together with

the crews who are in them.’’6

Ethical Issues in AI
