CamRangerHardwareTheCamRangerdeviceisturnedonbyslidingthepowerswitch,locatedonthesideoftheunit,towardsthefrontofthedevice.Thegreenpowerlightwillilluminatewhentheunitispoweredon.Anyswitchontheoppositesideofthepowerswitchdoesnotcurrentlyhaveanyfunc5onality.

Thechargingportislocatednexttothepowerswitch.ThemalemicroBendoftheprovidedwhitechargingcordisconnectedtothisport.TheotherendofthechargingcordcanbeconnectedtoafemaleUSBportthatprovidespower,suchasacomputerorthroughtheprovidedACadapter.WhenthedeviceischarginganaddiLonalyellowlightwillilluminatenexttothegreenpowerlightindicaLngthatitischarging.Theyellowlightwillturnoffleavingonlythegreenpowerlightwhenitisfullycharged.

AblackneoprenecaseisprovidedtoassistinaOachingandsecuringtheCamRanger.Thecasehasacarabineertofacilitatehangingfromatripod,beltloop,etc.DonotjusthangtheCamRangerbythecableasitwillputstrainontheUSBconnectorsaswellaspossiblydisconnect.

TheCamRangerbaOeryisaccessiblebyremovingtheboOomcover.

TheboOomcoveristhesidewiththeCamRangerserialnumber.Simplygraspthesideedge/cornerofthecoverneartheUSBconnectorandpullbacktoremove.Toreplacethecover,firstplacethetwolowertabsintotheslotsandthensnapinthetop.

CamRangerisnotwater-resistantinanywayandshouldnotgetwet.


CamRangerRegistra0onBeforeaniPad,iPhone,oriPodTouchcanbeusedwithaCamRanger,itneedstoberegistered.RegistraLonrequiresInternetconnecLvity.Beforeproceeding,confirmconnecLvity.(DonotconnecttotheCamRangernetwork.)

Pressthe“Register”buOontoloadtheregistraLonviewseenbelow.

Enterthe8-characterCamRangerserialnumber.TheserialnumberislocatedbothontheboOomofthebackcoveraswellasabovethebaOeryunderneaththebackcover.Note:theserialnumbercontainsonlyleOersandNOnumbers.

Pressthe“Register”buOontoregister.AmessageboxwillappearindicaLngregistraLonwassuccessfulandtheiOSdevicecanbeusedwiththeCamRanger.ExittheappandthenproceedwiththesetupprocessasdetailedbelowintheCamRangerSetupsecLon.

IfregistraLonfails,confirmInternetconnecLvityandtheCamRangerserialnumberbeforecontacLngcontact@CamRanger.comforassistance.

CamRangerSetupPowerontheCamRangerandconfirmthatallfourlightsbrieflyappear.TheCamRangerwilltakeapproximately30secondsunLlitisfullyiniLalized.

ThefirstLmetheuserconnectstoCamRangerfromaniOSdevice(iPad,iPhone,oriPodTouch),theiOSdeviceneedstoberegistered.SeetheCamRangerRegistraLonsecLonabove.

OntheiOSdeviceconnecttoyourCamRangernetwork.TheSSIDwillbeCamRanger-###,withthelastthreecharactersmatchingthelast3charactersoftheCamRanger’sserialnumber.Thepasswordisthefull8charactersoftheCamRanger’sserialnumber.ThepasswordMUSTBEENTEREDINALLCAPS.ThekeyboardonneweriOSversionscanbeputintocapslockbydoubletappingtheshifkey.

ConnecttheCamRangertothecamerawiththeprovidedblackUSBcable.ThemaleAendisinsertedintotheUSBportattheendoftheCamRanger,andtheotherendisconnectedtotheUSBportofthecamera.Thenensurethecameraisturnedon.WhenthecameraisconnectedandturnedonthegreenlightclosesttotheedgeoftheCamRangerdevicewilllight.

LaunchtheCamRangeriOSapp.TheapplicaLonwillconnecttotheCamRangerandtheuserwillbeabletocontrolthecamera.

ForcommonproblemswithsetupandconnecLonrefertotheTroubleshooLngsecLonattheendofthemanual.

FirmwareUpdateItisrecommendedtochecktheiOSappandfirmwareversionbeforeusingtheCamRangertoensuretheyarethelatestversion.Theappmustbeatleast2.0andthefirmwareversion6tosupportnetworkbridging,sharingfeatures,ortheCamRangerPTHubandMP-360(orMP101,Bescor,orHague).ToupdatetheCamRangerfirmware,visitcamranger.com/downloadsforfurtherinstrucLonsonupdate.

RecentThumbnails

� • Asimagesarecaptured,thethumbnailsareautomaLcallydownloadedanddisplayed

alongthetopofthescreen.Thethumbnailsmaybescrolledlefandrightwhenmorearedownloadedthancanfit.

• Athumbnailmaybeselectedtoviewthecorrespondingimageforviewing.Theimageisdownloadedanddisplayedinthemainimageview.Thecurrentlyselectedthumbnailisindicatedwithayellowoutline.

• WhenbothaJPGandRAWfileformatiscaptured,onlytheJPGthumbnailisdisplayed.• JPGandRAWfilescanbeviewed.NikonTIFFfileswilldisplaythethumbnailbutthe

associatedimagecannotbeviewed.ItshouldbenotedthattheNikonRAWfilessimplyshowsacompressedJPGversion.However,iftheimageissaveditwillsavethefullNEFfile.

• Asmallred“R”icononthelowerrightofthethumbnailindicatesthatitisaRAWimage.Asmallgreen“T”indicatesTIFF,whilenoiconisusedtoindicateJPGformaOedimages.

iPhoneThumbnailsThethumbnailsontheiPhonesoriPodToucheswiththeoriginalsizedisplay(nottheiPhone5sizedisplay)aredisplayedinadifferentmanner.Aferapictureistaken,themainimageviewwillslidedowntorevealalistofthumbnails.SelecLngathumbnailwillslidethemainimageviewbackinplacewiththedownloadedimage.

ThethumbnailandmainimageviewscanbeswappedatanyLmebyswipingthescreenupordown.

MainImageViewLiveviewandcapturedimagesaredisplayedwithinthemainimageview.

CapturedImagesImageswillbedisplayedinthemainimageviewinoneoftwoways,byselecLngathumbnailinthethumbnailssecLonorthroughtheAuto-Viewfeature.TheAuto-ViewfeatureisdescribedinmoredepthintheAdvancedSejngssecLon.

Itisimportanttonotethatthatimagesdisplayedinthemainviewarenotsavedbydefaultandaresimplybeingdisplayed.TosavetheimagetotheiOSdevice,refertotheCurrentImageControlsorCardContentssecLon.

Theimagemaybezoomedinto100%resoluLonbydoubletapping.Theimagecanthenbepannedbydraggingafinger.Doubletappingagainwillreturntheviewtoitsoriginalstate.

AsindicatedinthethumbnailssecLon,TIFFimagescannotbeviewed.


DependingontheamountofmemoryinyouriPad,iPhone,oriPodtouch,certainlargerimagefilescannotbeviewed.Deviceswith1GBofmemory,suchasthe3rdor4thgeneraLoniPadandtheiPhone5,willhavenolimitaLons.Deviceswith512MBofmemory,suchasthe2ndgeneraLoniPad,iPadMini,oriPhone4,canviewnearlyallimagesexceptfortheverylargest,suchasalargeJPGontheD800.Deviceswith128MB,suchasthe1stgeneraLoniPadandolderiPhonesandiPodTouches,willnotbeabletoviewlargeJPGsonmostcamerasormediumJPGsonsomecameras.

Whenviewinganimage,afingerswipeontheimagetotheleforrightwilldisplaythepreviousornextimagerespecLvely.BypressingtwofingersonanimageandrotaLng90degreeseitherdirecLon,theimagecanberotated.

SLllimagesviewedwithinthemainviewcanbecorrectedaccordingtoanX-RitecolorcalibraLon.SeetheColorCalibra2onsecLonformoreinformaLon.

LiveViewImagesInliveview,theimageisautomaLcallyupdatedasliveviewimagesstreamin.TheexactrateisverymuchdependentonWiFisignalstrengthandthecameraandiOSdevicespecs.However,assumingagoodconnecLon,liveviewframeratewillbeabout7–18fpsdependingonthecameramodel.

Duringliveviewtheimagemaybesingletappedtofocusatthatpoint,alsoknownasperforminga“touchfocus.”NotethatforCanoncameras,theouteredgesoftheimagecannotbefocusedon.Doubletappingwillzoominanddoubletappingagainreturnstoregularsize.

AliveviewhistogrammaybetoggledonorofffromtheDatatabasdescribedintheAdvancedDatasecLon.Togglingthehistogramonwillgenerateahistogramforeachliveviewframe;however,atthecostofadecreasedframerate.Togglethehistogramofftomaximizetheframerate.

Canoncamerascandisplaytheliveviewimageonthecameraaswellasallowphysicallytriggeringimagesbypressingthecamera’sliveviewbuOona3erstarLngitontheCamRangerapp.NikoncamerasdonotallowanycontrolofthephysicalcamerawhileliveviewisacLve.

AdvancedTabsTherearefourtabsprovidingadvancedinformaLonorcontrols:Data,Focus,Timer,andHDR.(TheiPhonedisplayhasafifhtabtoincorporatetheAdvancedSejngsbuOon.)AddiLonalTripodorStackShottabsarealsovisiblewhenthoseaccessoriesareconnected.


DataTab

ThedatatabshowsanRGBhistogramandmeta-dataassociatedwiththeimageinthemainimageview.Thefollowingmeta-dataisprovided:

• ShuOerSpeed• Aperture• MegaPixels(Notethisisnotfilesize,butimageresoluLon)• ISO• MeteringMode• ExposureCompensaLonValue

Withinliveviewthedatatabwillsimplyinformtheuserthatliveviewisonandprovideatoggleswitchtotogglethedisplayofthehistogram.Thehistogramisupdatedinreal-Lme,butatthecostofslowingdowntheframerate.

FocusTab

� Thefocustabisonlyenabledduringliveviewandprovidesadvancedfocusingcontrols.

• FocusAdjusto TherearetwosetsofbuOonstomovethelens’focalplanenearerorfurther

fromthecamera.o EachsethasthreebuOonswithdifferentsizedarrowstospecifyalarge,medium,

orsmallstepinfocus.


o TapthebuOontomovethefocusbyasingleincrement,holdingdownthebuOonwillhavenoaffect.

• FocusStackingo FocusstackingisaprocessoftakingmulLplecaptureswithslightchangesin

focusandthenpostprocessingthemtoenhancethedepthoffield.Thiscontrolallowstheusertosettheincrementalfocusstepsizebetweenineachshotandthenumberofshotstotake.Eachfocusstepwillmovethefocalplanefurtherfromthecamera.Sotheuserwillwanttosetthefocustothenearestplanedesiredtobeinfocusandstartthestackingprocessfromthere.Iftoofewcapturesweretaken,theprocesscanberestartedfromwheretheiniLalstackingended.Asgeneralrule,largestepsizesaregoodforlandscapes,mediumformostmacrowork,andsmallforhighlymagnifiedmacroscenesand/orlowf-stopvalues.Note:thepostprocessingisnotdonewithintheCamRangerapp.

TimerTab

� TheLmertaballowstheuseoftheCamRangerasanintervalometeraswellasspecifyingexposureLmeswhenthecameraisinbulbmode.

• TimeLapseo TheentryfieldsareusedtospecifytheiniLaldelaybeforethefirstshot,the

numberofshotstotake,andthedelayinbetweeneachshot.o Aferconfiguringthesejngs,pressthe“Start”buOontobeginthe

intervalometerprocess.o TheintervalometercommandsarestoredontheCamRangerdeviceandtheiOS

ShuOerSpeed,Aperture,andISO.• TheIniLalDelayfieldspecifiestheamountofdelay,ifany,totakebeforebeginningthe

brackeLngsequence.• TheiniLalvaluefortheselectedpropertyissetwiththeStartValuefield.• ThetotalnumberofimagestocaptureisspecifiedbytheNumberofShotsfield.• ThepossibleStepSizevaluesareupto3stopandspecifythehowmanystopstovary

theexposurebetweeneachcapture.o Typicallythestepsizevaluesareinincrementsof1/3stops.However,thiscan

varybasedonthecamerasejngs.ForexampleifthecameraisconfiguredtoonlyallowISOvaluescorrespondingtofullstops,thenthestepsizeincrementwillbe1stop.

� PressingthearrowsatthetoprightandlefmovestheexposurecompensaLon.HoldingdownthearrowwillmovetheexposurecompensaLontoitsrespecLvelimit.ThetwobuOonsattheboOommiddlecontrolthebracketamount.PressingthearrowspoinLnginwillreducethebrackeLngamount,whilepressingthearrowspointoutwardwillincreasethebrackeLngamount.

ThebrackeLngisnotsetunLlthe“Set”buOonispressed.The“Close”buOonwilldismissthedialog.Pressing“Close”withoutpressing“Set”willeffecLvelycancelanyadjustmentsmade.

o The“Capture”buOoniniLatesthecameratrigger.TheexactcamerabehaviorisdependentonthecameraandcameraproperLes,mostimportantlythecapturemode.

o Formostcapturemodes,suchassingle,Lmer,orquietthebuOonperformstheimagecaptureasexpected.Itshouldbenotedthatforsomecameras,advancedmodessuchasremoteorLmerwillbehaveassinglecapturemode.

o ConLnuouscapturemodediffersbetweenNikonandCanon.▪ Nikon:AferselecLngaconLnuousdrivemodeapickerisdisplayed

allowingtheusertoselectthenumberofimagestocapture.WhentheCapturebuOonispressed,thatnumberofimageswillbecaptured.

• Auto/ManualFocusToggleo TheAF/MFFocustogglebuOonallowstheusertochangethefocusingbetween

autoandmanualwithouthavingtophysicallyadjustthecamera.o ThisAF/MFadjustmentisnotpossibleforallcamerasinallmodes.Forexample,

TojoinanexisLngnetwork,firstconnecttotheCamRangernetworkfromwithintheiOSsejngsandthenstarttheCamRangerapp.Selectthe‘Sejngs’buOonfromwithintheCamRangerapp,expendtheConnecLon/Networktabandthenclickonthe‘View/Edit’buOon.AdialogwillappearlisLnganynetworksthattheCamRangersees.OnecanjoinaparLcularnetworkbyselecLngthenetworkofinterestandthenenteringthepasswordifnecessary.TheCamRangerwillthenaOempttojointhatnetwork.NotethatwhileconnecLngtotheaddiLonalnetworktheCamRangernetworkwillmomentarilydisconnect.OneshouldjointheaddiLonalnetworkbeforestarLngaCamRangersession,aOemptedtodosoduringasessionmaydisruptthecurrentsession.TheCamRangercannotbridgewithhiddenInternetnetworks.

OnceonehasconnectedtoanaddiLonalnetwork,thisnetworkwillautomaLcallybesavedintheCamRangersejngs.TheaddiLonalnetworkswillbelistedattheboOomofthenetworkdialog,“KnownCamRangerNetworks,”andcanbeaccessedwithinthe‘View/Edit’tab,withinthe‘ConnecLon/Network’tab,foundintheCamRanger‘Sejngs’.WhenevertheCamRangeristurnedon,theCamRangerwillaOempttojoinanyoftheknownnetworksonthe“KnownCamRangerNetworks”dialoglist.IfmulLplenetworksarewithinrange,itwilljointhenetworkwiththestrongestsignal.NetworkscanbeaddedordeletedbyselecLngthe‘Edit’buOon,foundnexttothe“KnownCamRangerNetwork”list.IfonedoesnotwanttheCamRangertojointoanynetworksonthislist,itisrecommendedtodeletethenetworksfromthelist.


WhentheCamRangerisbridgedtoanothernetworkitprovidestwomodesofoperaLon.AdevicecanconnecttotheCamRangerwhenthatdeviceisconnectedtoeithertheCamRangerorbridgednetwork.IftheCamRangerisbridgedtoanInternetconnectednetwork,devicesontheCamRangernetworkwillbeabletoaccesstheInternet.

NOTE:IftheCamRangerisnotabletojoinanetwork,suchasduetoaninvalidpassword,itispossiblethatCamRangerwillnotcreateititsownnetworkandtheWiFilightwillbeoff.Ifthisoccurs,powerontheCamRangeronwhereitcannotaccessthebridgednetworkortemporarilyturnoffthebridgednetwork.ThebridgednetworkwithintheCamRangernetworksejngscanthenbedeletedormodified.NotethattheSSIDoftheexisLngnetworkmustbelessthan32charactersandcannotcontainanapostropheorquotaLonmark.

UsingtheCellNetworkTypicallyifconnectedtoaWiFinetwork,aniPadoriPhonewillnotusethecellnetworktoconnecttotheInternet,evenifthedevicehascellularconnecLvity.SowhenconnectedtotheCamRangerWiFinetwork,bydefaultitisnotpossibletoreachtheInternet.However,thereisanunofficialwork-around.IfconnecLonissuesarise,reverLngbacktotheoriginalconfiguraLonmayberequired,however,mostusershavehadgoodsuccesssimultaneouslycommunicaLngwiththeCamRangeroverWiFiandtheInternetoverthecellularnetwork.Toconfigurethiswork-around,pleaseusethefollowingsteps:

WhenthephotographerisinaCamRangersession,otherscanviewimagesandliveviewonseparatesmartphones,tablets,orcomputersusingtheCamRangerShareapp.TheCamRangerShareappisfreeandtheiOSversionisavailablefordownloadontheAppleappstore.Otherversionsareavailablefromwww.camranger.com/downloads.IndividualsusingtheCamRangerShareappcanonlyviewimagesandliveviewwhentheCamRangerisconnectedandthemainapphasenabledsharingfromwithinthesejngs.TheCamRangerfirmwaremustbeupdatedtoversion6andabovetoenablesharingfromwithintheCamRangerapp.ThephotographerhascompletecontroloverwhatissharedtootherdevicesusingtheCamRangerShareapp.FromwithintheCamRangerSejngs,thephotographercanselectwhethertoautomaLcallyshareallimagesthatareviewedonthemaindevice,shareallthumbnails,andwhetherornottoshareliveview.Individualimagescanalsobeshareddirectlyfromthemainview.Themaindeviceswatermarksejngswillbesetonallsharingdevices.

Commands• Dependingonthecameraandthemode,capturecanfailifthecamerafailstoacquire

focus.• Intervalometer,Bulb,andAdvancedBrackeLngsequencecommandsarestoredonthe

CamRangerhardwaresuchthattheiOSdevicedoesnotneedtoremainonandconnected.However,thisalsomeansthatanychangesoracLonswiththeiOSdeviceduringoneofthoseadvancedoperaLonscouldresultinfailureorunexpectedoutcomes.

• WhenanoperaLon,command,orsejngisnotavailableornotworkingtheissueisofenrelatedtothecamerasetup.Forexample:o TogglingtoAFisdisabledifthecameralensswitchissettoMF.o LiveviewwillfailonCanoncamerasifLiveViewShooLngisdisabledinthe

camera’smenu.o Capturefailsbecausetheremovablemediaonthecameraisfull.

• ForCanoncameras,theLiveViewfocusmodewithinthecamera’smenumustbesetto“LiveView”.

• AdjusLngorviewingthenumberofbrackeLngshotsisnotcurrentlysupported.Thedisplayassumesthreeshots.However,ifthenumberofshotsisactually2,5,7,9,etc.thebracketamountissLllcorrectitwilljustincorrectlydisplay3shots.

camera’scard.OnmostcamerasthisisrelaLvelyquick.However,dependingonthecamera,speedofremovablemedia,andnumberofshotstakeninsuccession,therecanbealag.

• ThemaximumsizedimagethatcanbeviewedisdependentontheiOShardware.Forexample,the1stGeneraLoniPadcanonlyhandlelargeRAWorJPG’sfromslightlyoldercameras,butcanhandlemediumsizedimagesfrommostcurrentcameras.The3rdGeneraLoniPadsupportsallimagesizesforallsupportedcameras.Regardless,allimageformatsandsizescanbedownloadedtotheuser’siOSPhotolibrarythroughthecardcontentsview.

• CamRangercanbeusedtoviewanddownloadpicturescapturedthroughothermeans.Soaseparatephotographercouldbecapturingimages,oraRForlighttriggercouldcaptureimagesandtheCamRangerappwouldautomaLcallydownloadthethumbnails.
