IONIC and NET IONIC EQUATIONS
• Net ionic – an equation representing what
happens to the ions in a reaction
- shows what is really taking place in a reaction
• Aqueous substances
–soluble in H2O
–Use solubility table
–Write in ion form
• Steps for writing net ionic eqns:– 1. Write molecular eqn, (Don’t balance)– 2. Write ionic eqn – use solubility table– 3. Write net ionic eqn – cancel spectator ions
Spectator ion – an ion that does not change from reactant side to product side
• Example #1 – Sodium chloride reacts with lead (II) nitrate to form sodium nitrate and lead (II) chloride
• 1 – Molecular eqn
• 2 – Ionic
• 3 – Net ionic eqn
• Example #2 – Solutions of barium bromide and sodium sulfate react together. Predict the products, write the net ionic eqn.
• 1 – Molecular eqn
• 2 – Ionic
• 3 – Net ionic eqn
• IMPORTANT:
Compounds that are _________ according to the _________ can ________ into _____ ONLY if __________ is present.
• Example #3 – Sodium chlorate decomposes.
• 1 – Molecular eqn
• 2 – Ionic
• 3 – Net ionic eqn
• Example #4 – Methane gas (CH4) is burned in air.
• 1 – Molecular eqn
• 2 – Ionic
• 3 – Net ionic eqn
