The INWA Education Committee met together in July 2010 in Gdansk - region Wejheyrowo. We all want to thank the Polish Nordic Walking Federation (PFNW) for being a wonderful and generous host. The PFNW and the president Olgierd Bojke arranged pleasant and comfortable accommodation for us, arranged for us to meet people both socially and professionally, arranged for us to meet with the local media and also organized the most important thing: a positive, peaceful and creative place to work.

The main goal of the INWA Education Committee is to deliver a range of high-quality educational programmes that meet the needs of its members. To do this, the Educational Committee invites all the member countries, INWA National Coaches and INWA Instructors to participate in creating guidelines for developing INWA as the leading organization in education and to progress Nordic Walking worldwide.

This means that all your ideas and suggestions are welcome. It’s an invitation to cooperate, be active, included and be heard. We are open to discussion and hope we’ll get your response. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE

A huge sports center “Yubileyny” in Saint Petersburg, hosted the very first Instructor Course in Russia, one of the latest members of INWA. 10 people attended this historic event to the benefit of themselves and Nordic Walking in Russia. After an informative and intensive two-day course held June 25 and 26, 2010, the participants became certified instructors. The Russia Nordic Walking Association (RNWA) arranged for a conference hall to facilitate theoretical classes on Nordic Walking. The “Yubileyny” sports center also provided comfortable surroundings for a practical part of the course and its participants were able to improve their skills in the open air. The first day of the course covered basic information on Nordic Walking, then went on to let the participants in on NW research, requisite equipment and the famous 10 steps in theory and practice with demonstrational training summing the day up. Andrey who supervised the whole event was delighted to be assisted by Galina.

The second day also featured an inspiring mix of theory and practice, providing the participants with further data and a chance to show their skills in a city of Saint Petersburg park. Future instructors learned of the factors of training and walking intensity, three levels of walking with poles and how to organize NW groups and work with different audiences. The day culminated in exams successfully taken by each and every participant. However engaging and tiring, the course convinced the newly acknowledged instructors that NW is a unique way of physical training, even more so given its health benefits and positive emotions it brings along.

JAPANESE WAY OF NORDIC WALKING

A lot of interesting news is coming from the Land of the Rising Sun. There were three significant

events as our Asian friends held the 65th Conference of the Japanese Society of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine (JSPFSM, in short) September

16-18, 2010, which was immediately followed by Nordic Fitness Forum 2010 in Nagano, September 18 and 19, 2010; and the Miyazaki Phoenix Nordic Sports Park opening ceremony on 1st and 2nd of October 2010. The first event boasted a workshop to be conducted by INWA national coaches, Professor Takeda and Fujita; the

gathering of all kinds of different people: athletes, instructors, nordic walkers, Olympians and Paraolympians, who share the same passion for sport. Naohiro Takahashi reports that participants of the Forum made the Zenko-ji Buddhist temple their starting point and had a fantastic time together. Our Japanese connection further advised of the interesting local trends developing in the field of Nordic Walking. Nordic Walking has gained ground amongst trail runners as an effective way to improve endurance. While trail running becomes really popular in Japan, so does

Nordic Walking – the best training method for a trail runner! Have you ever heard of balneotherapy? If you have, we bet that you wouldn’t dare associate it with Nordic Walking – Japanese hot spring resorts are daring enough to combine the two. As you can see, imagination is the only limit for choosing this place to practice Nordic Walking. And when the weather is bad – our Japanese friends have developed what is termed Nordic Dancing. When faced with the wall of heavy rain you can hide within concrete walls of a gym or any other indoor space you see fit for the purpose. Add a stick to your pole and indulge in the art of ic dynamic stretching to the sound of music; say “Singing in the rain” for instance.

The Land of the Rising Sun seems a rising giant in the area of Nordic Walking. Keep up the good work! To read more about Miyazaki Phoenix Nordic Sports Park opening ceremony click here. Contact JNFA:

2010 NATIONAL COACH COURSES

In 2010 INWA conducted two National Coach Courses: in Poland and Estonia. In July 2010, in the beautiful northernmost region of Poland, on the outskirts of the city of Gdansk; Tiina Arrankoski, INWA International Coach and a prominent representative of our organization conducted an INWA Coach Course for 13 new Polish INWA National Coaches. In September, before the 2010 INWA Convention, Tiina Arrankoski delivered another Coach Course at Estonia's ski centre in Otepää; our 6 new National Coaches are from Brazil, Estonia, Korea and United Kingdom

On Thursday 29th September we had the Official Opening Ceremony with Aki Karihtala, President of INWA, Rein Randver, who was the president of Estonian Nordic Walking Association and a former Minister of Ecology in Estonia; and Toomas Savi, President of Estonia Ski Federation and former European Parliament member.

We had an inspirational talk from Mati Alave, the head coach of Estonian Cross Country Skiing, on how important it is to have a passion for your activity in order to succeed, whether you are a skier or a Nordic Walking instructor. He also taught new drills in the practical workshop in collaboration with Andrus Veerpalu, the most successful Olympic athlete from Estonia with three medals (Gold - 15 km - 2002 Salt Lake City, Gold - 15 km - 2006 Turin and Silver 50 km - 2002 Salt Lake City), and Jaak Mae (Bronze medal 15km event at 2002 Salt Lake City).

We had very interesting lectures with Tiina Arrankoski, INWA International Coach, about the History, Biomechanics of Nordic Walking and the New 10 Steps. Kim Lohmann from Exel introduced the new concept for Exel brand. The plan is to expand the use of Exel brand for other product categories in the field of Nordic sports, trekking and xc-skiing. He spoke of the importance of INWA in developing a Seal of Approval Program to control the quality of Nordic Walking poles.

Besides the Mati Alave practical session we had several workshops with Tiina Arrankoski (New 10 Steps), Tiina Arrankoski and Tatiana Novaes (warm up and cool down) and Malin Svensson (drills); the workshops were a great opportunity to give Instructors new ideas and inspiration for their classes.

To end the convention, the Latvian Nordic Walking Federation hosted a superb gala dinner in Riga to celebrate the 10 year anniversary. On Sunday we had Gary Johnson and Malin Svensson from Nordic Walking North America talking about the way they made Nordic Walking grow in the USA. Following this presentation we had Katrina Gorbatenkova, from Gymstick, who gave us a practical session allowing us to try Gymstick products developed specially for Nordic Walking; and Tom Rutlin who gave a exciting lecture and taught us how to Exerstride.
