RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY FOR ALL GENERATIONS INVITED SPEAKERS DR SIMON KILLOUGH Simon Killough is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in the Belfast Trust and Honorary Lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). After graduating in Dentistry in 1994 with a BSc(Hons) in Pathology, he undertook a house job before spending 7 years in general dental practice. He was appointed a Clinical Lecturer in QUB in 2002 and commenced a PhD in the field of dental pulp biology. He was awarded the European Society of Endodontology Research Prize in 2005 and spent time in the University of Lyon in 2006 and 2007. He undertook higher specialist training in Restorative Dentistry from 2004-2009 and completed his PhD in 2007. Simon’s main interest is in head and neck oncology and he has developed this service in Northern Ireland with his active involvement in the multidisciplinary team, streamlining of pre-radiotherapy dental assessments, obturator planning and utilising dental implants for oral rehabilitation. He also leads the multidisciplinary implant clinic, managing patients with hypodontia and dental trauma. His research interests include quality of life issues in head and neck oncology patients. Simon is an enthusiastic clinical teacher and is the Training Programme Director for Restorative Dentistry in Northern Ireland. He also works part-time in a specialist multidisciplinary dental practice. ANDREW DAWOOD Andrew has been working with dental implants for more than 20 years. A registered Specialist in Prosthodontics and Periodontics, he is an innovator in the fields of implant dentistry, 3D imaging and 3D printing. He lectures and publishes extensively in the UK and abroad. Andrew has a passion for implant reconstruction of patients with extensive tissue defects as a result of resorption, trauma or post cancer surgery, and has used imaging and manufacturing technologies to facilitate and expedite these treatments. The need for exemplary imaging and computer planning for complex dental implant treatments for patients with advanced bone loss or complex maxillofacial defects, led to the development of cavendishimaging.com, a digital imaging and surgical planning facility, which now operates as a free standing entity. DR FRANK BURKE Frank is the Vice-Dean (Academic Affairs) in the College of Medicine and Health, University College Cork. DR SIMON KILLOUGH

Simon Killough is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in the Belfast Trust and Honorary Lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). Andrew has been working with dental implants for more than 20 years. A registered Specialist in Prosthodontics and Periodontics, he is an innovator in the fields of implant dentistry, 3D imaging and 3D printing. He lectures and publishes extensively in the UK and abroad.

PROFESSOR BRIAN MILLAR

Brian Millar is Professor of Blended Learning in Dentistry at King’s College London and NHS Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the King’s College London Dental Institute at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals. He is a specialist in Prosthodontics and in Restorative Dentistry. He is also Programme Director for the internationally popular MClinDent (Fixed & Removable Prosthodontics) and in the past set up the highly successful MSc programmes in Aesthetic Dentistry and also Advanced General Dental Practice by blended learning at the KCL Dental Institute. Brian has almost 35 years experience in clinical practice and is currently an active specialist clinician in both hospital and private practice, particularly in treating tooth wear, aesthetic and occlusal problems utilising MI philosophies where possible. He is an experienced teacher to undergraduates and postgraduates and well-known provider of postgraduate education nationally and internationally at conferences through lectures, seminars, webinars and hands-on courses. He has published over 160 papers, supervised over 200 PhD and Masters students, and been involved in setting up MOOCs with over 20,000 students. Research includes management of occlusal problems using MI techniques, bringing together esthetics and function with a focus on tooth preservation.

HAL DUNCAN

Henry (Hal) Duncan qualified from the University of Glasgow in 1993. After practice and dental school appointments, he worked in specialist endodontic practices in Northern Ireland and England from 1998-2008. Hal received his postgraduate endodontic training in Guy’s Hospital London from 2002-2006 under the tutelage of the late Tom Pitt-Ford and is currently a UK registered Endodontic specialist. In 2008 he concluded a collaborative research study with Dr Ram Nair (in the University of Zurich) on pulp capping with MTA and calcium hydroxide and in 2013 he completed an IADR fellowship in New York University with Dr Nicola Partridge on the role of epigenetic modifying agents on pulpal mineralization.

Since 2008 he has worked full-time at Trinity College Dublin as an academic and Consultant in Endodontics. He is currently completing an external PhD with the University of Birmingham, England with Professor’s Paul Cooper, Tony Smith and Dr Garry Fleming in the area of epigenetics, pulpal regeneration and repair. He has received several research grants, has edited and contributed to Endodontic textbooks, published a number of articles in peer-reviewed international journals and is an Associate Editor for the International Endodontic Journal. He is a current committee member of the Irish Division of the IADR, is the Irish representative to the European Society of Endodontology (ESE) and also serves on the ESE membership committee. He is the recent past president of the Irish Endodontic Society.

DR GERRY MCKENNA

Gerry is the current president of the European College of Gerodontology. He is a Senior Lecturer based within the Centre for Public Health in Queens University Belfast and a member of the Nutrition and Metabolism Research Group. His research is centred around optimising treatment options for older patients which positively impact their dental and overall health. He has won a number of international accolades for his research work including the Senior Clinical Hatton Award from the International Association for Dental Research, the GABA Research Award from the European College of Gerodontology and the J Morita Research Award in Geriatric Oral Research. Gerry is a specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics working as a Consultant in the Belfast NHS Health and Social Care Trust.

PROFESSOR CHRIS IRWIN

Chris is clinical Professor of Periodontology and academic lead for Restorative Dentistry in the Centre for Dentistry, Queens University Belfast. His research interests focus on the role of fibroblasts in regulating mucosal health and disease in the oral cavity with external funding from the Wellcome Trust, the Northern Ireland Research and Development Office and the European Society of Endodontics. Chris is a former president of the Irish Division of the International Association for Dental Research and a previous recipient of the International Association for Dental Research/GlaxoSmithKline - Innovation in Oral Care Award.

PROFESSOR SEAN STRAIN

Sean is a Professor of Human Nutrition and Director of the Northern Ireland Centre for Food and Health at the University of Ulster. After graduating with a BSc (Chemistry), BAgr (Agricultural Chemistry) and PhD (Nutritional Biochemistry), all from Queen’s University, Belfast, Sean spent several years (1977-1980) in academia in Australia before joining the University of Ulster. He has attracted over £34M in research grants and research structural monies and is an author of over 250 peer-reviewed research publications, mainly in the areas of trace element nutrition, fatty acid metabolism, and in B vitamin and homocysteine metabolism. In 2002, he was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy. He was the 23rd President of the Nutrition Society (2010-2013), and is currently Chairman of the Board of the European Nutrition Leadership Programme and Vice-Chair, Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA), and Chairman, NDA Working Group on Claims, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Parma.

PROFESSOR JAYNE WOODSIDE

Jayne is a Professor of Human Nutrition in the Centre for Public Health, Queens University Belfast where she leads the Nutrition and Metabolism Research Group. Jayne specialises in the conduct of human nutrition intervention studies with whole foods and whole diets examining clinically relevant endpoints, in interventions to promote long-term dietary change, and in the assessment of diet using biomarkers. She has published widely in the nutrition field and has current funding from the Medical Research Council, National Prevention Research Initiative, Safefood and World Cancer Research Fund. Jayne is Editor-in-Chief of Nutrition Research Reviews, Supplements Editor for British Journal of Nutrition and Chair of the Irish Section of the Nutrition Society.

PROFESSOR FINBARR ALLEN

Finbarr Allen is currently Professor/Consultant in Oral Rehabilitation and Prosthodontics, at University Dental School and Hospital, Cork, Ireland. A graduate of the National University of Ireland, Cork, he worked in general dental practice in Oxfordshire, and hospital posts in Leeds Dental Institute prior to completing higher specialist training in Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry at Manchester and Newcastle Dental hospitals, UK. He completed a PhD whilst a Lecturer/Honorary Specialist Registrar in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. He has published over 160 peer reviewed scientific papers and research abstracts in the scientific dental literature and is the author of 2 textbooks. He received a Distinguished Scientist award from the International Association for Dental Research in 2011in the area of geriatric oral health research. In addition to his research interests, he is co-ordinator of Prosthodontics teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Cork Dental School. His clinical interests are Prosthodontics, implantology, craniofacial rehabilitation and restorative treatment of the elderly patient and he is currently chair of the Irish Committee for Specialist Training in Dentistry.

DR LUC VAN DER SLUIS

Luc graduated in 1985 at the Academic Centre Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), the Netherlands, where he successfully completed the postgraduate endodontic programme in 1993 under the guidance of Prof. Dr. P.R. Wesselink. He received his PhD degree in 2007. From 1993 until 2010, Luc worked in a practice limited to Endodontics and held a position in research and teaching at the Department of Cariology, Endodontology and Pedodontology at ACTA. From 2010 until 2012, Luc worked as professor at the University of Toulouse (France). Currently Luc leads the Department of Conservative Dentistry in the Centre for Dentistry and Oral Health at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. He is also Principal Investigator at the Kolff Institute (University of Groningen). He has published over 50 journal articles and is co-author of book chapters in international textbooks. Luc has been invited to speak at many international conferences. The current focus of his research is the disinfection of the carious lesion and root canal system, which he systematically investigates with specialists in biofilm research, fluid dynamics and sono-chemistry.

DR CRISTIANE DA MATA

Cristiane is a clinician and clinical researcher based in Cork University Dental School and Hospital. She completed her undergraduate training in Belo Horizonte, Brazil followed by postgraduate study in University College Cork. Her PhD project examined caries management strategies for older patients including the use of minimally invasive techniques such as ART. Her research interests include gerodontology, dental public health, health economics and oral health related quality of life. Her presentation on ‘Contemporary caries management for older patients’ is sponsored by Colgate.

PROFESSOR FRANCIS HUGHES

Francis Hughes is Professor of Periodontology at Kings College London. He graduated from Guys Hospital Dental School in 1979, and after 3 years in Dental Practice moved to the London Hospital where he completed his FDS, PhD and clinical training. He worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Toronto 1988 – 89 after which he returned to the London, and was appointed Consultant in 1992 and Professor of Periodontology in 1999. He moved to KCL in 2009. Francis ‘s research interests include the biology of tissue regeneration, and of biomarkers, risk and prognostic factors in periodontal disease. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journals of Dental Research, Clinical Periodontology, Periodontal Research and of Oral Diseases. He is a past president of the British Society of Periodontology and of the Pan European Federation of the International Association for Dental Research. He is currently Chair of EuroPerio 8, responsible for organising the World’s Leading Congress in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at ExCeL London on 3- 6th June 2015.

PROFESSOR JIMMY STEELE

Jimmy Steele is a qualified and practising dentist with an honorary contract as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry with Newcastle Acute Hospitals Trust. He qualified with BDS (Dundee) in 1985 and after 4 years in NHS hospital dentistry he moved to Newcastle to take up a Lecturer position. He completed his PhD in 1994, clinical specialist training in 1998 and became a Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in 2003.

Jimmy’s role now is as Head of Newcastle Dental School but still with significant clinical, teaching and research activity. His clinical and teaching activity is in Restorative Dentistry. His research is mostly based around population oral health and oral health services, including oral health policy and economics. Jimmy also has a number of external roles, leading the ‘Review of NHS Dental Services in England’ for the Government in 2009, and subsequently working with the Department of Health to pilot and consider implementation of the recommendations. He is currently the National Oral and Dental Speciality lead for the National Institute for Health Research and is on two Fellowship panels for NIHR. Jimmy is also one of the senior members of the consortium that worked with the Office for National Statistics on the 1998 and 2009 UK Adult Dental Health Surveys and the 2003 and 2013 UK Children’s Dental Health Surveys. .

PROFESSOR FRAUKE MÜLLER

Frauke Müller is professor and chair for gerodontology and removable prosthodontics at the University of Geneva. She was born in Kiel, Germany and studied dentistry in Bonn, where she received her Dental and Doctorate Degree. Until 2003, she worked at the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry of the University of Mainz, Germany where she received her habilitation (PD) in 1996. Thanks to fellowships, she had the opportunity to spend several years at the London Hospital Medical College, England (1988 and 1993/94). Professor Müller served on the board of the SSRD (Swiss Society for Reconstructive Dentistry) and is Past-President of the ECG (European College of Gerodontology) and GORG of IADR (Geriatric Oral Research Group). She is a member of the ITI Board of Directors (International Team for Implantology). Since 2010 she has been President of the Swiss Society for Dentistry for elderly and handicapped persons (SGZBB). She is also Associate Editor of Gerodontology and the textbook “Oral Healthcare and The Frail Elder”. In 2013 she was awarded the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research. Her research activity is mainly related to gerodontology, oral function as well as complete and implant prosthodontics.
