The University of Colorado Boulder Department of Classics
with the Colorado Classics Association and the Colorado Junior Classical League present:
Invitation to Boulder: Classics at the University of Colorado Boulder
Saturday, 24th September, 2016
9:30-10:00: Welcome and registration (HUMN 350) hosted by grad students Shelby Frank, Kyle West, and Classics major and former JCL member Taylor Phelps.
x Please turn in your signed photo releases and signed waiver of responsibility, to allow you to participate in the day’s events.
JCL will man a booth where coffee and cookies will be available. 10:00-11:30: Workshops (First period = 10:00-10:40. Second period = 10:50-11:30) These activities take place concurrently with the fall meeting of the Colorado Classics Association. All activities take place in Eaton Humanities.
Students will participate in group activities coordinated by CU faculty and graduate students. Students must remain at the activity they choose to join for its duration. There will be time for students to participate in two activities each, one in each of the two activity periods. Students may choose from among the following activities [room capacities are given in square brackets after each room]: x Write like a Roman! (HUMN 186 [26]), hosted by Professor Isabel Köster.
Scratching or painting messages on walls was a regular way in which the inhabitants of Roman towns communicated with each other. In short sentences they kept track of their favorite gladiator’s fighting record, reviewed the local bakery, or expressed their political support. This workshop introduces participants to reading these communications and provides an opportunity for imitating Roman handwriting as we create some Roman graffiti of our own.
x Digging for the ancient past (HUMN 1B70 [26]), hosted by graduate student Rachael Dodd: this activity will introduce participants to the basics of archaeological method and will offer a hands on demonstration in the conduct of archaeology.
x Decipher a Roman epitaph (HUMN 160 [20]), hosted by Professor Peter Hunt: participants will learn to read simple Latin gravestone inscriptions, the most common texts produced by poor Romans, slaves, and ex-slaves. Individual epitaphs provide fascinating, if sad, glimpses into ancient life stories; taken en masse they can shed light on Roman family structure, marriage patterns, seasonal diseases, and slave life.
11:30-11:45: Break Please be aware that the University cannot provide refreshments (food or drink) for any participants, although JCL will have coffee and cookies available. Water fountains are available in Eaton Humanities. Participants may bring their own snacks but should use the opportunity of this break to consume them, ideally outside the building. NB: Students may not at any time leave the event area without a graduate student guide!
11:45 – 12:30: Mini-lecture on Roman History, by Tyler Lansford (HUMN 190 [34]). 11:45 – 12:30: Spoken Latin: introductory level (HUMN 180 [24]), hosted by Tim Smith of Ridgeview Classical Schools. Participants will learn simple greetings and how to give directions in a fun and relaxed setting. Laughter guaranteed. 11:45 – 12:30: Certamen and Q&A (HUMN 186), hosted by JCL and grad students Wesley Wood and Shelby Frank. 11:45 – 12:30: Certamen and Q&A (HUMN 160), hosted by certamen and grad student Kyle West and Classics Major and former JCL member Taylor Phelps. 12:30 – 1:15 pm: tour of the Classics Department and of the Humanities campus (incl. Norlin Library and the Art Museum), led by graduate students Shelby Frank, Kyle West and Wesley Wood and Classics Major and former JCL member Taylor Phelps. Informal Q&A on studying Classics at Boulder. 1:15 pm: JCL Costume Contest: Dress up like your favorite Greek or Roman! Any character or historical figure is ok! JCL officers will judge the contest on Norlin lawn at 1:15 right after the walking tour ends. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place courtesy of CoJCL! Transportation: the University of Colorado cannot provide transportation to this program. You are encouraged to drive with your students and/or to organize carpools with student and/or parent volunteers. Directions: use online direction finders to get to the University of Colorado Boulder. All events will take place in Eaton Humanities. A campus map is available here: http://www.colorado.edu/campusmap/map.html?bldg=HUMN&x=19&y=7. Parking: see map attached. Attendees are responsible for their own parking costs. There are three main possibilities (although the map gives you further options):
x Park in Lot 380 (marked in blue on the map), directly opposite Eaton Humanities, at a cost of $4 (tickets available at the machine in the lot).
x Park in the Grand View parking lot (marked in orange on the map. This is just North East of the corner of Broadway and University Ave in Boulder (behind Starbucks). Parking here is free at the weekends. Once you’ve parked, walk East (away from the mountains, down University Avenue, which will slope downhill. Then turn right onto Macky Drive (uphill again). This will bring you face to face with Eaton Humanities.
x Euclid Autopark is available and will cost $4 (tickets available at the machine in the lot).
