EURAPS Research Council 27-28 th May 2015 Dear colleagues, From surgical anatomy, antisepsis, and anaesthesia, to medical education, clinical radiology and the development of Plastic Surgery, Scots have been at the centre of surgical development for 300 years. It is therefore my pleasure to invite you to Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, for the 4 th EURAPS Research Council Meeting taking place from May 27th – 28th 2015. This meeting has become the key European forum for high quality basic science and translational research that is relevant to Plastic Surgery. The 2015 meeting will involve leading Scottish scientists from relevant fields of research. On the 28 th , Prof. Stefan Hofer (Wharton Chair of Reconstructive Surgery, University of Toronto & Editor-in-Chief of JPRAS) will give an invited lecture on how to produce academic research from a complex microsurgical practice. We will also host a panel discussion on Stem Cell Biology and the translation to clinical practice featuring respected Scottish Scientists, and a talk on how the development of microsurgery from an experimental technique into mainstream surgery could highlight the way to proceed. The venue is located amidst the Georgian architectural splendour of Edinburgh’s New Town - home to the Scottish Enlightenment. The Assembly Rooms have been the setting for the precise combination of rigorous intellectual discussion and enthusiastic socialising that will characterise our meeting, with its mixture of keynote talks, presentations and social events. We aim to stimulate exciting scientific discussion, and to set the scene for friendships, careers and collaborations to develop. Famed for its malt whisky and haggis, Scotland also produces some of the world’s finest specialty beers, seafoods, soft fruits, game and farm produce, all of which are easily accessed in a city whose world class cultural events, music scene, clubs and nightlife are all within easy reach. A few minutes walk from the Meeting venue will bring you to a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets, or to Edinburgh Castle and many of Britain’s finest museums, cultural venues, restaurants and historic pubs. Venture further into the old town for its ghosts and dark secrets of grave robbing and rebellion, or exit the city and rapidly reach hills, beaches, and iconic spots such as the Forth Rail Bridge or the home of golf in St Andrews. A wide range of outdoor and adventure sports are available nearby, including one of the U.K.’s largest mountain biking centres (Glentress); the Scottish Highlands and Islands are only a few hours drive away. Glasgow is 45 minutes by train, and provides a complimentary range of Scottish culture, nightlife, and travel options. Edinburgh and Glasgow airports have direct connections to many European cities, and there are regular flights and rail connections to the London hub airports.
