Hello, my name is Nestor L. Arce, CPA;I am honored to currently serve as the presidentof the Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce,“SECC”, for the Townships of Bloomfield andBelleville and the Borough of Glen Ridge. Myterm as president officially started in January of2011.I could expound on the current state of economicaffairs and how it relates to the economy as awhole and to the SECC in particular. However,since I am an optimist, I will not look upon it asa problem, instead, I see it as an incredibleopportunity. Prior to starting my tax andaccounting practice in Belleville, NJ, I worked asa tax auditor for thirty-four years. All the time,I was thinking that I wanted to start my ownbusiness. Upon being presented with an earlyretirement package, I saw my opportunity andseized it. I am much happier now than I haveever been. I took control of my life and mypractice is growing. Many persons who havebeen recently laid off from their jobs/professionsare now presented with an opportunity to starttheir own businesses.We all know of the advantages of being your ownboss, such as: control over your destiny, nothaving to answer to anyone, getting paid basedon the amount of effort expended, working asmuch or as little as you please, etc.Another opportunity I seized upon was joiningthe SECC, where I have met and continue tomeet, interesting, educated and influentialindividuals from all walks of life. The membership fee is ridiculous whencompared to the benefits that can be derived (seemember benefits on page 4). Do yourself andyour business a favor and become a generalmember, trustee or executive board member; youwill not regret it. Celebrating our 95th year, the Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce represents andpromotes local businesses with a goal in 2012 to grow through membership and in theservices that we are able to provide to the business community. The chamber's membersinclude many professional practices, service and retail businesses, organizations, civic andpatron members.

The Spotlight Directory is an annual community information and resource guide. It containslocal township emergency contact information for administrative offices, schools andgovernment elected officials in each of the towns that we represent. The directory alsoprovides a complete listing for all our member businesses along with announcements, eventsand programs that we provide throughout the year.

Monthly board meetings and networking events encourage members to connect with one another to developrelationships and share ideas that stimulate growth opportunities within our local community.

The chamber has recently implemented an exciting new program called "Member Value Program" (MVP) which isan additional benefit and marketing opportunity for our members. Money saving discount offers are listed on thechamber website for all member businesses that choose to participate and consumers simply need to show theMVP key tags at participating businesses to receive the advertised discount. The Township, along with the Bloomfield Board ofRecreation, is very pleased to have this serviceavailable for our senior citizen population andhandicapped residents. The service will beprovided to make it easier for those seniors whohave no means of transporting themselves tonecessary doctor and dentist appointments.While medical appointments are given priorityscheduling, the senior citizens, along with ourhandicapped population, are eligible for thisservice for other necessary transportation needs.Those needs could include a trip to the cemetery,the library, a nursing home or hospital to visit asick friend or relative or any of a number of otherdestinations in Essex County.•Open to all Bloomfield residents' ages 60 and

older or person with disabilities.• All requests must be made at least 72 hours

(3 days or more) before your scheduled appointment.

Bloomfield Celebrates Bicentennial in 2012Year Long Celebration Features Monthly Events to

Commemorate Township's 200th Year

Bloomfield was part of Newark in 1666 when that town wassettled. It was two hundred years ago in 1812 that

Bloomfield, New Jersey was incorporated as a municipality.In 1796, the congregation of the Old First Church (now thePresbyterian Church on the Green) was formed. Ithonored Revolutionary War General Joseph Bloomfieldby naming the newly formed parish after him, ThePresbyterian Society of Bloomfield. In 1812, the townseparated from Newark and incorporated as the Townshipof Bloomfield, taking its name from the aforementioned

Presbyterian parish. Bloomfield originally covered 20.52square miles (now 5.4 square miles) and included Belleville,

Montclair, Woodside, Nutley and Glen Ridge, each separatingfrom Bloomfield in 1839, 1868, 1871, 1874 and 1895 respectively.

Dozens of bicentennial events are planned in Bloomfield throughout the year,including a Bloomfield family roots contest, historical presentations and tours,planting of the bicentennial tree, musical performances, an expanded MemorialDay parade, opening of the sesquicentennial (150) time capsule, old fashionbicentennial picnic, Fourth of July fireworks spectacular and the burying of thebicentennial time capsule. “We encourage all current and past residents of Bloomfield to participate in asmany activities as possible, as we respect our storied past and continue to buildour future,” said Janice Litterio, Chairperson of the Bloomfield BicentennialCommittee.
